Started Lolita (Vladimir Nabokov). I read it at school and I thought it was boring. I didn’t really get why it was such a popular book. And re-discovering it today, I understand the controversy better but I still don’t like the style and I dislike the narrator. I don’t find interesting at all.

What makes the book more shocking to me today is that I’ve now been exposed to all the terrible news about evil people. Epstein, Weinstein, Bruel, Pélicot, and all those fuckers come to mind when I go through this novel. Just like those tech billionaires, the rapists read it as a blueprint.

All those terrible people always use human nature to justify their horrible acts. But nothing proves human nature is what they claim. Plus, what makes us human is our ability to control ourselves and go beyond our natural instincts. People using those excuses are selfish cowards. Just like Humbert.

Just started 007: First Light. I’m glad I’m playing it before GTA 6 because my definition of AAA gonna change afterwards. It’s a bit like Apple and how it defines the standard all the time. I just bought a flip phone a few months ago in China, the Xiaomi Mix Flip 2. I liked it very much.

The shooting drives me crazy. It is so infuriating. And that shooting range also has bugs so I’ve missed many of my shots because it didn’t register. It is ruining my entire experience so far. I don’t even want to know more about it because it completely took me out of my immersion.

On the bright side, the main characters’ faces are well rendered. I particular like Moneypenny, portrayed by Kiera Lester, who’s great in that role. I also like the clothes. The stitches, the rolls on those lapels, the buttons, the textured, they are all well reproduced. It’s a stylish game.

I absolutely hate the shooting in this game. Maybe I should have played it on PC with mouse and keyboard. The lack of proper auto-aim is terrible on a console TPS. I just can’t use controllers that fast. So everything is slow and I don’t feel like a hero in those scenes. It is so frustrating.

I thought we could throw nades back because during the combat, a tutorial box pops up and says I can throw my weapon… but that tutorial doesn’t pause the game and everyone is shooting at me. The text is small and the buttons are all the same shape and colour. Who can properly read that? It’s so bad.

I’ll still keep playing it because I want to know more about the story and the characters. I can’t wait for GTA 6 because I’m so tired of those models. They all look the same and they move like weird animatronics.

The action phase is also quite mediocre. It feels clunky. The combats are quite spectacular looking but they aren’t that fun to play. It is far from Batman or Spiderman. And the driving is terrible. I don’t feel the sense of speed at all. It feels slow. And the controls are boring.

What I dislike the most is the UI. There are so many buttons and the tutorial shows all the triggers with the same colour and roughly the same shape. I have no idea what is what, especially during tense moments. I still can’t remember how to pick up a nade and I can’t find it in the tutorial.

Got a few chapters down. I like James Bond and I see what they did. There are some passages that work well, for instance, I like that sort of puzzle where probably whatever I click works because I’m “lucky”. It’s cool. And the story is nice too. It feels a bit Kingsman rather than pure 007.

But my problem is the gameplay. By mixing both stealth and action, none is done perfectly. The game feels like I have agency and freedom but it is quite linear and I can only interact with specific elements. It clearly doesn’t allow the same liberty as in an imsim for instance.

Started Seduction Theory )(Emily Adrian). And finished it in one seating. A pretty fun book, especially the way it implements the unreliable narrator. It is weirdly focused and it also felt personal. It even made me think about my relationship with my wife and my friends in general.

I like the characters, especially the couple. Or the unreliable description of it. There is something charming and touching about it. In a way, it’s a great love story. The exploration of ambition and glory isn’t as interesting to me as the simple telling of relationships between those people.

Started Audition (Katie Kitamura). One of those books I was intrigued by the cover despite not being anything special. Maybe the colours attracted me. Maybe the title. I don’t know. I just got it from Green Apple Books one day. It’s quite an intriguing novel. Easy to read, modern writing.

I have my own interpretation of it. I think they are all playing a part. But it doesn’t matter because this feels like one of those books that are written to be open for interpretations on purpose anyway. I like its construction. And that middle cut feels like a real entracte, coherent to the title.

Overall, it really works. I want to read it again maybe after some time. Knowing what I know, I already feel I’d understand the beginning differently. A fun book.

I actually finished it in one stand. For some reasons, it reminds me a bit of Obsession. Or a horror novel. Maybe it’s due its structure or that everything happens in one location, a house. Its claustrophobic. And it’s weird. Unsure how to interpret it. The brutal transition in the middle is great.

And because it doesn’t offer anything new, I automatically compare it to what I know already. Uncharted, TLoU, and, ofc, GTA. The very moment I started feeling this game is already aged is during that scene when everyone starts running. I realised that we all have the same running animation.

And somehow, that small detail, that shocked me. Again, it’s ridiculous, and it literally doesn’t add anything to the gameplay. It doesn’t add anything to the story. But somehow, it struck me in the eyes and I cannot unsee it anymore. And I keep thinking about it.

And I still like it now. But after the presentation of the iPhone duo, I immediately found my Xiaomi phone old and uncool. Yeah, it’s ridiculous, but I can’t argue with feelings. And during my first mission, the intro, of First Light, I already started feeling a bit the same, comparing it to GTA 6.

It’s still just the beginning and many friends told me this is a great game, so I’ll see. But so far, nothing new on the horizon. I got that squeeze between 2 rocks loading scene, that move around the edges, that hide in tall grass, that making noise on the radio to get around, etc.

Started Days at the Morisaki Bookshop (森崎書店の日々, Satoshi Yagisawa 八木沢 里志). This time, I got what I was looking for. A gentle, pleasant, light, kind, and smooth read. And it is such a reader’s book. I also like the timing as I started to explore 神田神保町 more in depth recently as I progress in Japanese.

It is a short book and it took me an afternoon to read it all. I really liked it as I engaged with all the characters, I felt like I understood them all. There is something naively beautiful about the writing and the dialogues. Might be also the translation, which is really good then.

Maybe one day I’ll read the original version. I’ve also compiled a list of books cited in this novel that I’d like to read myself. Another reason I liked it so much is that I also frequented a tiny bookstore during my years in prep. It was in Paris. Librairie Scylla. I liked that place so much.
