My method for making Viking Age Inset weights! The platforms have warned me a video of this length is of no interest so won't promote it, so any shares are greatly appreciated if you find it useful or interesting! #vikings #experimentalarchaeology #archaeology

Making some viking age inset weights... Note fellow specialists; objects are placed in the base of a mould and material cast onto it. Not dropped in the top, or hammered in, or rivetted on, or any other nonsense! #viking #experimentalarchaeology

One of my techniques for making viking age gaming pieces in a rapid and ad hoc manner. This leads to quite crude objects, akin to examples found on viking great army sites in Britain and Ireland. #vikings #experimentalarchaeology #archaeology

Inset weight making day today, so a mix of dry and wet moulds. The wet moulds get a little *splashy* but make the process much quicker. #GreatArmy #Experimentalarchaeology #vikings

This weekend I had a go at enamelling. Not done this before, and quite surprised how easy it was! #experimentalarchaeology #crafts

Finished my Cumwhitton grave 5 Seax and sheath too; fits the evidence we have, and gaps filled in a reasonably period apropriate way! #viking #archaeology

So finished engraving this chapel for a Seax sheath; as said previously; totally made up to try and plug *probable* holes in evidence, but who knows if they looked like this? The design is trewiddle style, and motifs adapted from two regional examples which are also on my sword. #livinghistory

Sometimes to try and recreate 'the whole' living history literally ends up having to make stuff up, or risk blank holes or anachronisms. This seax and sheath has been an exercise in that. It's pretty confident in the elements, but very few actually exist and intact and secure finds! #livinghistory

Bit of progress on the Cumwhitton 5 Seax sheath and several wooden cores from my sword scabbards. I don't think I did my trigger thumb much good though!

Recently I've been looking at making sheaths for two Seaxes; one a copy of a blade and silver inlaid horn handle from Cumwhitton Grave 5. I've used a tidied up version of a sheath from York for Cumwhitton, as the interlace seems most appropriate for the site and cultural links. #archaeology

The Anglo-Saxon one is a bone handle with inhabited vinescroll from the Victoria and Albert Museum, to which I have fitted a blade and horn stoppers. For it I have used inhabited vinescroll motifs; mostly from Cumbria or Northumbria. Adapting motifs is difficult but sometimes necessary. #archaeology

That's the silver fittings finished on my type L Anglo-Saxon sword. The next stage is a final adjustment to get the fit perfect, and then final polish and then fitting it all together! #anglosaxon #earlymedieval #reenactment #sword #archaeology

I helped pop together a little blog about some of our emerging archaeological finds on the A66. Long term there is a lot of potential to put some more pieces in the jigsaw puzzle with this site! In the short term; check out the links below to book a slot on the site tour this Saturday #archaeology

Looking at some reproduction viking oval brooches I have made, and seeing the variation and also some thoughts on how they look and the significance of keeping them in circulation in the early medieval period. #viking #earlymedieval #archaeology

These 'repaired' oval brooches are almost done. I've added silver wires with others 'missing' in area, worn the gilding down, and riveted the hinge fitting 'repairs' on the back. The rivets are a mix of silver, repaired silver, and iron. Just have the pins to fit. #vikings #archaeology
