1/9 Are you one of those people who is always late? 🌐🐦 If a migratory bird starts late, does that delay follow it through the year, or can it get back on schedule? We asked this using tracking data from 2,324 birds of 83 species across six continents.🧵 Paper: doi.org/10.1038/s415...

6/9 So the annual cycle is not one uninterrupted chain of dependent events. Migration periods are strongly coupled, but the long non-breeding period provides a window in which earlier timing differences can be largely erased.

7/9 Why does this matter? If delays during migration cannot be fully erased, disruptions in one place can carry over across continents. But the non-breeding period may provide an important buffer, a chance to reorganize the schedule before spring.

4/9 But late birds did try to catch up. A bird leaving 10 days late shortened autumn migration by about 6 days, and spring migration by about 4 days. Impressive, but not enough. They still arrived later.

5/9 Then the connection disappeared. Birds spent, on average, ~161 days on the non-breeding grounds. Yet arrival date there had almost no relationship with departure the following spring. The temporal link had disappeared, the annual-cycle “reset”.

2/9 We combined year-round tracking data from 2,324 individual birds, representing 83 species across six continents, and reconstructed when each bird moved through the major stages of its annual cycle. Then we asked a simple question: If a bird is late now, will it still be late at the next stage?

3/9 During migration, the dominoes clearly fell. Birds that left their breeding grounds later also reached their non-breeding grounds later. Birds that left their non-breeding grounds later arrived back at the breeding grounds later. Timing delays travelled with them.

How do we know our research results are REAL? We replicate them! Most folks agree but lament on how hard it is to publish these replications. My dearest gentle reader, lament no more! Delighted to unveil: Replication Studies, a new section of Behavioral Ecology 1/ academic.oup.com/beheco/artic...

Academics and technologists are sounding the alarm about a growing crisis in scholarship as we know it: AI-generated citations of nonexistent papers that have infested real journals. Despite being fake, the sources are widely assumed to be authentic the more they appear in published literature.

I wonder how many migratory birds will not make it back to Europe this year. A 1000-km long dust wall combined with strong S winds is very likely lethal for many of them. #ornithology 🌐 #birdmigration #birds

A data collection mission that began in 2012 is finally released as AVONICHE. Designed as a companion to AVONET bird trait database and updated to Avilist taxonomy, it’s an Open Access dataset providing updated diets and a detailed breakdown of foraging behaviours used by all bird species. 🪶🌐

Ferran Sayol@ferransayol.bsky.social

New paper out! 🐦📊 We realease AVONICHE, a global dataset with detailed information on the proportional use of 32 foraging niches, combining dietary categories with the behaviours and substrates used to access resources. Openly access the paper and data in GEB: doi.org/10.1111/geb....

Our global meta-analysis of changes in genetic diversity across the entire tree of life indicates pervasive loss of intraspecific diversity, but there is a glimmer of hope: conservation actions and management interventions can indeed make a difference. 👇
