Tax credits work, and Illinois is proving it. 🎉 Nearly 950,000 Illinois working families received more than $600 million in tax relief through the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit in 2025. The average family benefiting from both credits kept $1,460 in their pockets. ⬇️🧵

4/ These experiences show how cash can give people the breathing room to think beyond their immediate needs. As families struggle with rising costs and policymakers consider an increasingly AI-driven economy, these stories remind us that the case for cash is already clear.

2/ The article asks whether guaranteed income could help address AI-driven job losses. But what emerges is a much bigger story about the power of cash, not just as a lifeline during difficult times, but as a way to give people more stability, choices, and control over their lives.

3/ For participants, cash meant help with groceries, rent, and everyday expenses. But it also meant being able to afford things that brought comfort and dignity, like clean laundry, swimming classes, and a family trip to an amusement park.

As ESP's Erion Malasi explains in The Indypendent, the beauty of a public option is that when communities are in need, tax dollars can be used to support people directly, rather than offering tax credits to corporations and hoping they care enough to show up. 2/2

3/ This matters for affordability. When a handful of corporations have too much power, families have fewer choices, small businesses and workers have less leverage, and dominant corporations have more power to set the terms of our economy.

2/ California’s antitrust framework has remained largely unchanged since 1907, even as corporate power and the economy transformed around it. The new law gives state enforcers stronger tools to take on monopoly power and dominant corporations that block competitors.

The US ranks 40th out of 41 comparably wealthy nations on accessible, affordable, quality childcare. But even with the federal government stalled, some states have been showing what's possible. Our new brief from @lbilik.bsky.social looks at what a national system should learn from them:

We’re not going to solve the childcare crisis by asking families to pay more or providers to stretch thin budgets even further. We need a public option that expands the supply of care and makes the system work better for families and workers. Our partners @economicsecurityproject.org make the case:

The United States is the only economically advanced nation that doesn’t recognize childcare as a pu...

The CTC, EITC, and guaranteed income pilots across the nation all point to the same conclusion: unrestricted cash builds financial stability. Fund and expand what works!

Last night, President Trump made a pledge we've heard before: cash for every American. The President has promised to cut checks for families struggling with the cost-of-living crisis many times in the past few years, (1/5)

To afford childcare, a single-parent household must spend 33% of their annual income on average. A childcare public option — government-funded, operated, and regulated childcare facilities — could help fix this broken system. Read the full report to learn how we can build it.

the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit. These lifelines offer direct, targeted cash relief to Americans who need it, when they need it. Boosting and expanding these credits would do a lot more to help struggling families than another empty promise. (4/5)

The Trump administration is using strained federal childcare funds to push its vision of what a family SHOULD look like. As ESP's Shafeka Hashash explains, it's "a moral judgment that honors married households while jeopardizing support for single, working parents."

"Full-time work among cash pilot participants increased substantially in nearly 60 percent of programs with relevant findings, and those benefits often persisted after the pilots ended."

How does direct cash affect work? Our new report, "Cash Works. So Do Its Recipients," reviewed 40+ pilots across the country and found that cash supports work, strengthens families, and bolsters local economies.

Today, we lost an icon, but few people know Dolly Parton was also an early champion of cash support. In 2016, after wildfires devastated her native Sevier County, she gave survivors $1K/month for 6 months, plus a final $5K check – no strings attached.
