A recent hike to Waylands Smithy along the ridgeway in Oxfordshire. The buzzard sat opposite the entrance like a guardian of the tomb. He stayed for the duration of our stay oblivious of our dogs and greatly enhancing the ambiance of the site. Visited 22September. #tombtuesday

The King Stone. In a field across the road from the Rollright stone circle near Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. Assumed to be a memorial to Bronze Age burials and separate from the circle. Erected approx 1500 bce. Visited Sep 2024. #standingstonessunday #rollrightstones #ancienthistory

Le Catillon II hoard. Found by two metal detectorists near Grouville, Jersey. Contains approximately 70,000 Celtic coins primarily from the Curiosolitae tribe from Brittany deposited about 50BCE. At La Hogue Bie museum in Jersey. Visited September 2023. #findsfriday #celtichistory #jerseyheritage

Tinkinswood burial chamber. This is my local tomb and responsible for my megalithic habit. Well known for its massive capstone. There is also a Bronze Age cist on the northern side of the mound and two standing stones on the south side #tombtuesday

One of the Cove stones in Avebury. It baffled me for years. Before discovering it is a cast from a tree root. The fact that it shows a circle within a circle. It used to conjure all sorts of ideas. #standingstonesunday

The entrance to Goodrich castle near Ross on Wye. Lovely architectural structures and a beautiful place to explore. Great views too. #castlesaturday #castles

The Gnoll stone ( Cefn Hurfynydd) in Swansea museum. Part of a Celtic wheel cross. The image of a Celtic Christian priest with his hands held up in prayer. He is wearing a pleated kilt. 11th century. #standingstonesunday #welshhistory

The Maerdy Oak at St Fagans museum, Cardiff. Apologies, the photo does not do it justice. This is one of the oldest woodcarvings in Europe dated to 4250 BCE. It was found by workmen whilst working on a substation for the solar farm near Maerdy in the Rhondda. #findsfriday

Uffington castle hill fort. You can see the entrance in the middle. View taken from the path off the ridgeway leading around to the uffington white horse. #hillfortwednesday

Belas Knap long barrow. False portal entrance. A wonderful tomb reconstruction and great walk near Winchester. #tombtuesday

Dina’s Powys hill fort. Vale of Glamorgan. Often overlooked as it’s covered in trees and not a large site. In use from pre Roman in its first phase to early medieval post Roman in its latter stages. #hillfortwednesday

Coeten Arthur Neolithic tomb. St David’s head, west wales overlooking Ramsey Island. The historic landscape includes a further collapsed Neolithic chamber and Bronze Age hill fort.

You are up to date.
