This is SO good 😭

Mass Effect was my ultimate white whale, my all-time dream project. For the last couple years I'd been in discussion w/ BioWare & EA to take on the project & as part of that I wrote close to 20 minutes of music to explore where the franchise can go next, may as well share it!

Belmont’s Curse finished with the good ending. It’s a brilliant metroidvania but it’s missing some classic Castlevania iconography I think. It’s also too inconsistent, be it the whip targeting or the difficulty. I do love how puzzley it is though. As fun as it is frustrating.

The mission design and gameplay could be bog-standard, but it's clear GTA 6 will still impress with this sort of immense detail in its world to ensure it's an all-consuming cultural phenomenon. (The radio stations have always been my favourite parts of the games so I'm happy!)

Been obsessed with Control Resonant the last week and for all its weirdness it’s very easy to pick apart. Combat is monotonous. The open world is full of filler. Pacing is off. Boss mechanics are dull. Yet it’s still one of my favs of the year?!

I just adore the strange vibes, the distorted reality, the smart set pieces. Nobody can do striking visuals and twisted level design like Remedy can. For all its basic flaws, it’s still such a unique experience. (Think the first is better though)

It might be basic with shallow repetitive combat, but I still enjoyed Wolverine more than I expected - mainly because the story between these two has so much heart and is so well performed. Still I wish it had been an X-Men game playing as multiple characters to give more variety.

Brilliant Fire Emblem review from @dompepin.bsky.social has me even more hyped for this, though this line terrifies me with so many other great games to play through:

Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is a strategy RPG great and an essential for the Switch 2. It's also just an absolutely sumptuous feast of a video game. Our review: www.eurogamer.net/fire-emblem-...

Capcom on a roll. Brilliant combat and a tone that marries mischievous humour with bloody horror. Final boss aside, I loved it. Just wish there weren’t so many repeated bosses and a little more variety overall.

Yeah it’s not for me. The extra environmental detail is nice, but the porcelain doll faces I really dislike, not to mention the voices. But more so, there’s nothing new? I was foolishly hoping for the FF7Remake treatment. But all we got is a jump and an app?!

The patronising nature of it all. “Not all Zeldas were open world” “I wonder what part the triforce will play in the film” “Now you can play an actual ocarina” Just give me the next big ORIGINAL game. That’s far more interesting to me. Not slimy Ganondorf with a square head.

“Did you know Link couldn’t jump before? “Now you can turn the camera!” “Did you know loading screens used to be a thing?” It just whiffs of fellow kids, with the sort of whimsical fairy art style your grandma would have on a bed spread. I need to stop but I’m hate watching it again.

I’ve played this a million times before. So when I say it’s not for me, it’s clearly aimed at people who have never played the original and need a history lesson before the film. Honestly I’m crushed. Will I still buy it and play it? Obviously. I hate myself.

Absolutely devoured the demo for Final Fantasy Resonance. Sure its mobile origins are clear and the story is typical fantasy stuff. But the battles are great, it’s full of references, and when the fanfare kicks in any negatives are completely forgiven. Also it’s incredibly generous for a demo!!

And I thought the first game was l’nonsense… This is such an overcorrection that barely relates to the first and is inferior in every way. The structure is convoluted, the open areas run awfully, the combat lacks strategy. Why am I playing as grown up Sora from Kingdom Hearts?!

Decided to treat myself 🤣

And by the end literally nothing has happened?! To be continued??!! Someone please tell me Lightning Returns is better…! I am longing for some pretty, linear corridors again. At least the music was good.

First gamescom as a PR is done! May not have played as many games, but still had a brilliant time on the METRO 2039 booth, caught up with industry pals, and even met Leon Kennedy himself Nick Apostolides. Now I’m exhausted.

Had a hankering. Plugged in the old console. Popped in the disc. Everything works. Fancy that? Anyway I maintain this game is great. It still looks incredible. Lightning is badass. And it’s the best battle music of the series. (Let’s forget the story is nonsense though eh?)

Just finished this and honestly I think it made less sense than the first time I played it. I appreciate it’s a very pretty 7/10 game but I still have such a soft spot for it. Perhaps now it’s finally time to play the sequels…

So I've played about two hours of Beast of Reincarnation and I don't think there's an original thought in the entire thing?! On paper it's very much for me but I'm just.......bored?

"Bringing taste back into the room. Metrics are a tool, not a decision-maker, said the group, which recommended reinvesting in editorial judgment – people whose job is to recognise great work and advocate for it." It's almost like games journalism is good, actually.

The industry makes great games, but nobody can find them. Algorithms built to surface content are increasingly rewarding volume, familiarity, and short-term engagement over quality or originality. https://bit.ly/44VFYO9

Catching up on the FF14 Fan Fest keynote. I’m always astounded at the art design and production value in 14. Evercold is no exception. Love that it’s going for a more traditional fantasy setting this time. And a FF7 Raid?! Yes please. I really need to get back into this.

Also love how basic things are given lengthy over-explanations like they’re revolutionary. Quest order choice? Have we not been playing open world games for decades now?! 😅 Still, I’m very happy at removing my cat boy’s warpaint and giving him a fat ass 🤣

Days like this I do miss being a journalist. Love the buzz of being at events like this and finding out all the new info. I can’t help but write headlines while I watch, sat at home on the sofa 🙃

Been meaning to play Chrono Cross for years and now finished it. Brilliant battle system and some clever ideas, but it all feels too complex for the PS1. Too many companions. Nonsense story. Not a patch on Chrono Trigger 🙃

007 completed! It’s sexy and thrilling and an authentic Bond experience. Its individual parts (stealth, shooting, driving) aren’t always top tier but in this package it all feels like a playable film in the best way.

That said, I think this style of cinematic action game is inherently flawed with pacing and difficulty spikes ruining momentum. I had the same thing with Uncharted. Just as horror games need tension, action needs smooth pacing. Small frustrations sometimes ruin the Bond fantasy.

Started Bond last night and loving it so far. It’s flashy and sexy and the training montage is incredible and it’s so youthful and cool. But mainly, where the hell can I buy this jacket please?

Sad to say I’m not enjoying Mina the Hollower as much as I’d hoped or others have. The thing with Souls games is they’re tough but fair with precise controls. But combine that trickiness with old school controls and sensibilities…it’s just a recipe in frustration for me.
