"Mearsheimer merits attention because he lends academic respectability to those blaming the west for Russia’s bloody war of conquest. At a moment when the US has swung behind Putin's driove to snuff out Ukraine such cover is invaluable." as.ft.com/r/2861010e-b...

"We are entering what may be the most dangerous phase in the life of the most dangerous political leader America has ever known." 💯

Did we really win the Cold War? Defeat fascism? Bury the Confederacy? In retrospect, thanks to Trump, MAGA and their enablers, perhaps none of those things. My latest. Hope you’ll give it a read. davidrothkopf.substack.com/p/so-as-it-t...

as.ft.comTrump and Hegseth’s execution-type dealThe decision to livestream the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan is a sign of profound moral decay
Edward Luce@edwardluce.bsky.social

"Though there's no suggestion that Hegseth will set up a pay-per-view scheme for Hasan’s execution, Trump would undoubtedly pay keen attention to the ratings. He is a life-long enthusiast for capital punishment." Me on Trump's ominous bread and circuses vibe. as.ft.com/r/90c044c5-a...

Dear tv and radio producers. Thankyou for the invitation. But, no, I do not want to appear on your show to defend the idea that I am English, after 50 years of living and working here, because the increasingly feral right want to turn this into a "debate" and you cannot see how you're being played

This is where we are. Live stream executions for Maga porn. Such barbarism is not easily wiped away.

BREAKING US execution by firing squad of Fort Hood shooter to be livestreamed: Pentagon official

Getting bored of US statesmen grokking "western civilization" to erect intellectually feeble scaffolding to justify attacks on liberal democracy in Europe - most recently Rubio at the Acropolis. Stop plundering Plato to justify your will to power.

It could not be clearer. @edwardluce.bsky.social is exactly right. America's billionaires need to understand that shirking their responsibilities and debts to society is a losing formula and a political error.

I hope you'll read this from @edwardluce.bsky.social about what DC post election will be like. I hope Dems will take in the implicit warning that disunity or lack of resolve could lead to a waste of the next two years and more damage to the country from Trump. giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...

giftarticle.ft.comA Republican midterm defeat will not be an earthquakeDemocrats are likely to make gains in Congress but divided government is unlikely to derail Trump’s agenda

A few critics said I overlooked Trump's upcoming Xi summit in my column this week on Trump's boredom with substance and obsession with monuments to himself. Guess which part of Trump's Xi interactions was his favourite? Showing Xi his new ballroom.

"The term “lame duck” would be haunting any other president’s sleep. But the concept is alien to Trump. He spends more of his time telling people about his architectural plans than he devotes to Iran, AI or the economy. Insoluble problems hold no interest." My column. as.ft.com/r/928f5cb7-6...

Democrats coming at Trump from the right on China. They're not evolving.

Chuck Schumer@schumer.senate.gov

As Trump hunts for a headline and a photo-op with Xi Jinping today, he’s at risk of losing sight of what’s at stake for the American people. Trump needs to stop fawning over foreign strongmen and put his foot down. Standing up for the American people means standing up to Xi Jinping.

Brings to mind this @edwardluce.bsky.social line on Trump: "Four years ago, he said bitcoin was a 'scam'. Now he wants to make America the 'crypto capital of the world'. To see that as a U-turn is to miss how Trump works. The second statement follows naturally from the first."

Public Citizen@publiccitizen.bsky.social

Trump once called Bitcoin a “scam.” But Crypto suddenly smelled like opportunity when World Liberty Financial put the Trump & Witkoff sons in business together. Reuters found Trump’s family got about $400 million from token sales. Public service, Trump style. #StopTrumpCorruption

Just to make it clear, Wapo still does some great reporting and still has David Ignatius and a handful of other great writers on its oped page. But its Bezos-pleasing editorial line is beyond parody.

I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

While warning about communism, Trump vows to bribe Americans with their own money (borrowed from China) so that he can keep control of Congress and get even richer. And he calls this proposed budget-destroying bribe a "dividend". Read David.
