The European Directive on the geological storage of carbon dioxide states that "Monitoring is essential to assess whether injected CO2 is behaving as expected, whether any migration or leakage occurs, and whether any identified leakage is damaging the environment or human health." 1/5

🎃 In this Halloween-themed post, we look at the echolocation call of the Common Noctule bat. The amplitude–frequency plot hides an interesting pattern. The spectrogram inset reveals that this little critter follows an exponential–linear trend (black dashed line) with scary mathematical precision. 🦇

* * * * Preprint * * ** Can you keep these birds apart? We may need to: climate change can reshape species' geographic distributions, so it's important to understand how to distinguish them. In our preprint, we explore how bird calls can be used to quantify acoustic similarities and differences.

Every September, I test my 2021 statistical prediction against summer temperatures at De Bilt. Since 1976, the station shows a tight trend of +0.034°C/year. In terms of equivalent geographical displacement, the Dutch summer has effectively migrated south to Central France over this period. 🇳🇱➡️🇫🇷 #KNMI

This comparison of today's Sentinel-1 satellite data with data recorded before the dramatic Tibet-Nepal flood shows the changes in the likely source area. In the coming days, we can expect InSAR-based estimates of the volumes of displaced rock and ice.

Insects highlight atmospheric patterns on the KNMI weather radar during last Saturday’s spring day.

📡 Radar Herwijnen, KNMI. 🧵

According to the UNESCO Tsunami Programme there is a 100% chance of a tsunami of at least 1 meter in height occurring in the Mediterranean in the next 30-50 years [1]. The French centre for tsunami alerts (CENALT) has a 15 minute warning window to send an alert message to the authorities [2]. 1/4

Alarm triggering would depend on evaluation of spatial consistency of the data [3]. This movie is created with an automated- and fast workflow. The data is gridded using sensors situated across France, Belgium and the UK. The resulting map demonstrates consistent recording of a remote earthquake 2/4

Realising that naming geological entities after countries can cause territorial disputes it is proposed to rename the North American plate “Drakonia” after the explorer of the North West Pacific, Francis Drake.

Is global warming accelerating? A paper in this months Geophysical Research Letters hit the headlines. The authors observe through detailed statistical analysis and adjustments for known effects (e.g. El Niño, volcanism) a statistically significant acceleration of global warming. 1/4

We can not determine with statistics if such an increase will persist ('stationarity condition'). To illustrate this the plot also shows Kalman filtered data at two different gains. The blue curve shows only longer term variations. The red curve shows also the shorter term variations. 3/4

The blue dashed line shows the trend of 0.2 C per decade derived from the adjusted HadCRUT trend for global surface temperature since the mid 1970s. The red dashed line shows a 0.32 C trend derived over the last 10 years. The authors make the caveat that known effects may not fully be adjusted. 2/4

In this movie we split the 2010 Sleipner CO2 site seismic data in a fine (warm coulors) and coarse scale (cold colours) using mollifier functions. The injector well is coloured in depth in grey scale. The two scales are offset, with the coarse scale signal confined deeper than the fine scale. 2/5

The figure shows waveforms recorded by 6 infrasound sensors located 4 kilometres away from Utrecht. The different arrival times of the sharp first break is consistent with the direction of the blast site. Possibly a slower, low frequent arrivals with opposite polarity follows the blast.

Major explosions can cause injury due to people looking out windows in response to a light flash or a fire preceding the blast. A blast wave can also be followed by a dangerous blast wind that rushes in to fill the void left by the expanding blast wave.

People living in earthquake prone area or air travellers have a high awareness on how to respond. An awareness for the effects of a man-made blast or for example caused by a meteor can safe lives!

The perimeter ABCD on REM data near Ermelo is interpreted as a Roman camp [1] although its dimensions are suspiciously close to metric (AB=201m, BC=299m). On the original data it is hard to see if 1930s forest roads cut the ditch and bank. Optical dating results are expected early this year. #Roman

For #hillfortsWednesday another item related to the Counts of Hamaland. The 10th century Uplathe castle. At the location of the nearby St Vitus the counts had a castle and founded an abbey ('Stift Elten'). This area straddles the border between Germany and the Netherlands.

A narco-state is a country where legitimate institutions become penetrated by the power and wealth of the illegal drug trade. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt inherited from his opium trading grandparents (Mary Aspinwall Roosevelt and Warren Delano II) smuggling opium using fast "tea" clippers[1]

In 1614 the later governor-general of the Dutch East Indies, Jan Pieterszoon Coen, is famously to have uttered the words: "There can be no trade without war, and no war without trade." [1,2] Out of context this words are easily misinterpreted as a general reflection on global trade.

The sculptor of this statue, Ferdinand Leenhoff the brother-in-law of Édouard Manet, faces the viewer in the painting Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe. A 1943 study made during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands concluded that Coen was just meting out justice following 17th century practice [6].

Removal of the controversial statue is part of an ongoing discussion in Hoorn [7]. The resurgence of Nationalist sentiment in the Netherlands and ill-informed glorification of the VOC past does not offer much hope for a quick decision to come clean with the colonial past.

Out of context this words are easily misinterpreted as a general reflection on global trade. However, in a letter to the VOC's Lords Seventeen he requested money and military resources to set up a monopoly in clove trade by preventing the local Banda inhabitants to trade with the English.

7 years later this resulted in the Banda genocide [3]. In 1893, during the heyday of Nationalism, a statue of Coen was erected in his birthplace Hoorn. At the time the Dutch were waging a war to occupy the Sultanate of Aceh. A war that lasted decades and with 100,000 or more casualties.[4,5]

During the Quasi-war (1797-1801) French privateers took American vessels. The disputed legality of this privateering resulted in court cases running well into the 20th century. Similarly, the U.S.A. may be in morally and legally troubled waters due to strikes against vessels in international waters.
