It’s always a pleasure to welcome Caroline Senneville, president of the CSN (one of the three main Quebec labour confederations), to speak to my Sociology of Work and Industry class at McGill. 3/

My students appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the labour movement and its role in the workplace and society more broadly. 4/end

Mes étudiant-es ont bien apprécié l’opportunité d’apprendre davantage à propos du mouvement syndical et leur rôle au travail et dans la société au sens plus large. 2/

Now she is continuing her academic journey in the sociology PhD program at UCLA. It was great to catch up with her in LA to talk grad school, research, and academic life (including academic unions, of course). Keep an eye out for great things from her, as the best is yet to come! 3/end

The results are in, and the message is clear: with 87% turnout, 86% of @mcgillarts faculty and academic staff have voted to authorize our bargaining committee to call a strike if we have to. 1/

Anyone who knows anything about academics knows that it’s hard to get 87% of us to agree on anything, so this shows how fed up faculty are about the administration’s antics and inaction. It’s time to bargain! 3/end

After more than a year of dragging their feet, it’s time for @mcgillu administration to come to the table and get serious about negotiating the contract we deserve. Congrats to our Mobilization Committee on running a fantastic campaign to get this result! 2/

It’s a short song, completely a cappella, just Margo Timmins’ haunting voice, singing about miners putting their lives on the line to dig gold out of the ground for their bosses. 3/

Today, with a few exceptions, once the song came on, the room got quiet, and students just sat and listened to the music. A proud moment for a Canadian Gen-X labour scholar. ✊🥹 4/end

Reposting my @theglobeandmail.com op-ed from last year re: Air Canada strike in light of the Carney gov't's current plan to "reform" the Canada Labour Code in a way that will curtail workers' Charter-protected right to strike. It seems that they still don't want to learn from history 1/

"The problem is that, if governments keep showing such disregard for workers' fundamental rights, we shouldn't be surprised if workers start showing more disregard for government orders. 2/

"To paraphrase [Prime Minister Lester B.] Pearson, if workers are to be told through repeated invocations of Section 107 [or Canada Labour Code reform] that they can never strike, one may be precipitating the very thing one is trying to prevent." 3/end

The first walk through Roddick Gates up to the Arts Building never gets old. It’s still summery in Montreal, so I dressed appropriately in breezy linen with tassel loafers. A great way to kick off the academic year! 2/

Photo credit: Anne Quismorio This concludes the Alt-ASA 2026 Edition of the Academic Conference Fashion Report. It’s been far from the usual academic conference for sure, but such a fulfilling way. Stay tuned for the next edition of the report at SSHA 2026 in Atlanta! 5/end

To get from conferencing to the airport and back home on a transcontinental flight, I opted for the Birkensuit: a relaxed linen suit with sandals meant for walking. 3/

P.S. The QR code in the pics should direct you to the petition for an ASA bylaws reform that would prevent leadership from denying members the right to vote on key decisions in the future. 9/end

And we capped off the day with a joint reception for the Sections on Labor and Labor Movements, Marxist Sociology, and the Political Economy of the World System, where we honoured our award winners and celebrated together. 6/

Sessions were packed, and the main hall turned into a commons for the day, a place to meet, mentor, exchange ideas. It was the best of what sociology can be. 4/

As acting chair of the ASA Section on Labor and Labor Movements, I consulted with our section council and polled the membership, and the overwhelming majority position was to move our section activities off-site this year. 2/

It was wonderful for everyone to be able to gather in this alternative space that was much more true to this year’s ASA theme of “Disrupting the Status Quo” than the official meeting. 3/

We were joined part-way by a second group who had walked out of ASA President Shelley Correll’s presidential address. We were also encouraged by passersby who were attending the Dominican Day parade, adding to the festive atmosphere. 3/
