There was a lot of talk lately about Trump’s suit and the meaning of the move from more luxurious brands to this one. But maybe the reason is far more mundane than a clever appeal to voters, as Derek implies. It’s all about covering body odors.

derek guy@dieworkwear.bsky.social

Trump's suit appears to be part of Jos. A. Bank's Traveler line. The suit is listed as having been made abroad using a wool-polyester-spandex blend. The company describes it as having the "ultimate stretch" and was designed to minimize body odor.

Another great thread from @americanstudier.bsky.social who reminds us all the importance of solidarity these days.

I just love Mamdani’s support of art and artists. Ever since the WPA arts programs we haven’t seen a government official so dedicated to the idea that art is essential to democracy and thus should be supported.

Calling all NYC artists — painters, filmmakers, poets, musicians and more! Did you know our city provides grants to support your work every year? And this year, we're DOUBLING the amount — from $5,000 up to $10,000 per artist! Deadlines are approaching fast — apply today at nyc.gov/artistgrants.

The first weekend of autumn brings not only a nor’easter, but also a great reason to stay hunkered down: my 295th #ScholarSunday thread of public scholarly writing, podcast episodes, new & forthcoming books from the past week. Add more below, share widely, & enjoy the scholarly storm, all! 🗃️ +

There‘s much to appreciate in Mamdani, but his insistence that culture isn’t a privilege of the rich is one of his strengths. It is reminiscent of how unions and the government treated it in the 1930s -art for the masses - paintings, music, opera, theater - democracy for all.

Never been to the opera before? Now’s your chance. We’re giving away 70,000 free tickets to the @metopera at the iconic Lincoln Center. Go to on.nyc.gov/opera to enter the lottery. There’s not a bad seat in the house.

I know that Kevin Spacey is now a problematic figure, but this movie is by far his best performance, and I will always remember that for him. I can still remember how I felt when I left the cinema after watching this film. #HATM

The 1937 musical Pins and Needles has an entire sketch criticizing right-wing conservatives who wanted to make America “bigoted and better.” These verses could have been a post today. Some things change, some things stay the same.

I don’t know much about Graham’s sister, but up until the 1960s and even later, being a dead senator’s wife, sister, or daughter was almost the only route available to women to be elected to congress.

In 1976, retailers inundated the market with “patriotic” consumer goods in red, white, and blue, and with images such as the bald eagle, flag, Liberty Bell, and George Washington, and Americans happily bought them.

It’s a nice gimmick, but even with the growing informality of dress in our politics, we will never see Mamdani not wearing a suit and a tie, whether in the pool or in the knicks parade. Unlike Fetterman, or even Eric Adams, Mamdani, as a Muslim and a socialist Democrat, can’t afford to look casual.

Spectrum News NY1@spectrumnewsny1.bsky.social

New York City residents are celebrating the reopening of public pools — including Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who jumped into the water while wearing a suit at an East Harlem pool on Saturday. Outdoor public pools will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day through Sept. 13.

During wwii more soldiers were out of commission due to VD than from combat. it became such a national threat that it prompt the military to have one of the largest public health campaigns in its history. To fight you need to be healthy—this is why the army mandates vaccines. until now of course
