Some early for holiday shopping but this thread of what Porter Book store can do for you is amazing. I expected it to be a ho-hum list of ideas, but it was very helpful.

Roasted butternut squash seeds for the first time yesterday. Patted them dry, drizzled with olive oil, threw on some salt and paprika. Toaster over at 350'F for about 11 minutes. Happy to report they were delicious. Sad to report I have none left.

Ok. Massachusetts Peeps...

ICE and assorted local thugs are hitting LA and San Diego (surprise, surprise) hard right now. If you're in the groups being targeted, please take extra care and caution. If you're not, please check in with your local support orgs to see how you can help. ✊🏾💜

The third anniversary

I cannot believe that I forgot that the Nobel Prizes were being announced this week. That means Open House New York Weekend is just around the corner. And congrats to this year's laureates.

It's so hard to stay on business as a magazine. Congrats @clarkesworldmagazine.com, here's to many more years to come.

For me, there is an inherent tension between the need* to post on a regular basis and not having anything to say. *In order to consider myself an active Bluesky user.

I got lax in masking and got #covid for the first time. Down for 2 weeks. Better now from initial infection.

This. Regulation is good, actually.

Terrible Air Quality today in NYC due to the wildfire smoke coming from up North. So NYC is giving away free N95s. If you have to be outside, maybe you can pick some up. Here are the locations: #WhenGovernmentWorks www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/v...

Does King Tutankhamun imply a King Tut-in-rare?

Yard sale today. Think I've gotten rid of the last of my Bat Mitzvah gifts (of the ones I'm not keeping). #GenX

It's done.

I'd appreciate ads more if they weren't terrible. Don't talk about my mom.

I have never been more temporarily confused than yesterday, when an 8 year old neighbor told me that some kid named Izzy was mean and made fun of her for not having hockey trophy. Er...I mean a Stanley cup.

Do it!

Every time I see this scary article about drowning, I make myself reread and then I repost it so you all can do the same.

If I was somehow able to send a many messages as I wanted to my younger self, I'd definitely send one saying not to watch The Twilight Zone episode "Time Enough At Last". It's haunted me for decades.

Somerville needs more households to try free curbside food waste collection

This is a far ranging discussion on one provost's journey in #HigherEd. (TCU is Texas Christian University). Hart & Hustle's Efrain is a great interviewer. And I must say, my brother-the-jock is a really good speaker. youtu.be/NoFnNAzLmec?...

I have nothing original or inspiring to say about this absolute travesty and further destruction of our country, but I don't feel right not acknowledging the VRA ruling.

Financial and healthcare POA forms are readily available online. Check your state statutes, hospital and state bar websites, etc. Or go to deadparentswhatnow.com/resources and scroll to the section for your state. I linked them all. It took me forever. #deathpositive #estateplanning

Set up for second seder complete! Pleased to report there is enough charoset.

Charoset made. Not sure well have enough for both seders, but I think we will.

The WPA is having a fundraiser that includes food, museums, events, etc. in #NYC. givebutter.com/c/Galentines...

Happy New York Anniversary to me!

Here was my prompt to ChatGPT for an image: "create a simple map of the western united states showing state boundaries and labels for states and major cities"

If you want localized excellent news that likely has nothing to do with you...here you go. I saw the original post and thought, "No way this is gonna get taken" and then in swoops Jimmy of the CT State Museum of Natural History.

Of the 9 endodontists in a 10 mile radius my insurance says they cover, 2 don't take my insurance, 2 don't have openings before Feb, 2 won't pick up the phone, 2 have dozens of reviews saying Don't Go Here Ever. I am waiting to hear back from one. In case you are wondering how my day is going.

Incidentally, any voter registration completed through this DMV site must be done by TOMORROW, 10/24 to be effective for this year’s General Election. Voters may still use the Board of Elections’ Online Voter Registration Portal to register by the 10/25 deadline. #NY #elections #NYC

I'm at the DMV to upgrade to a Real ID. Appreciate the picture taker who took one look at my picture, said "Ma'am!", and immediately offered to retake it. I saw the first picture. It was not great. As the DMVer asked, "Had you ever seen the movie 'Smile'?"

If choosing between a guy who would be bad for the Jews and a guy who would be bad for Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Protestants, Catholics, atheists, and everyone else, I have to go with the guy that is bad for just the Jews. Note: You don't have to be antisemitic to be bad for the Jews.

Everyone needs to know that Dolly Parton responded to a climate disaster in her community with a temporary universal basic income for everyone who lost their homes. Here's a short documentary about it:

Proud of myself that I got it together enough to schedule a #COVID vaccination at Walgreens. Then I got there & discovered that I now need a prescription from my doctor even though I'm immunocompromised but it wouldn't have matters anyway because the government hasn't given them any of the shots.

I think this is in your neck of the woods @sbmost.bsky.social And by neck, I mean continent. Maybe a project for the whole family? #FunScience

It's not the most intriguing part of the story, but I think it's worth noting that the reporter tried to reject the bribe when she thought it was a literal bag of chips. (It turns out later that the bag had money inside of it.) #NYCPolitics

If you have something you'd like to share with ProPublica's journalists, who deeply investigate abuses of trust and power in the public interest, here's how to that: www.propublica.org/tips/

100% did not know that German chocolate cake is a Texan confection named after German chocolate which itself is named after the man who created the type of chocolate used. He was English. #TIL. Thanks @bcdreyer.social

…it occurs to me that we could start asking politicians that are openly Christian if they “oppose Christofacism and support Freedom of religion in the US”. Don’t even need media people for this, we could just start asking at like town halls.

I hope everyone notices that Trump is trying to normalize the idea of arresting political opponents for no reason (Trump attempted a coup in 2021 so miss me with the false equivalences)

Study finds A.I. LLMs advise women to ask for lower salaries than men. When prompted w/ a user profile of same education, experience & job role, differing only by gender, ChatGPT advised the female applicant to request $280K salary; Male applicant=$400K. thenextweb.com/news/chatgpt...
