🌎 Lula’s victory keeps the possibility of protecting the Earth alive - but the fight isn’t over. 🔗 Read more in the op-ed from Steve Trent, EJF CEO and Founder, and Luciana Leite, EJF Chief Representative and Lead Advocate for Brazil: ejfoundation.org/news-media/l...
Out of sight, out of control. 🦑🌊 Squid fleets fish vast areas with no catch limits, no reporting, no monitoring. Join EJF at #COP17 for our new film and panel. 📍 Ocean Pavilion, 28 Oct, 16:00 🔗 Register here: luma.com/i1xcz13f
Solutions exist: the Global Charter for Fisheries Transparency, area-based management tools, and Article 5 of the WTO fisheries subsidies agreement, which bars subsidies for fishing on the unregulated high seas. Governments need to act. Read the Global Charter here:

#CBDCOP17 is under way. With oceans high on the agenda, we’re calling for delegates to make real progress on protecting marine ecosystems. But 30x30 can't close the high-seas fishing gap alone. Join EJF on 28 Oct, 16:00, Ocean Pavilion 🦑 luma.com/i1xcz13f
“Europe already holds many of the tools needed to deliver it, from the CFP to a strengthened fisheries control system... What is needed now is the will to close implementation gaps.” This clear vision is only the starting point - it’s time for this ambition to turn into real, tangible action.
🌊 We’re #Hiring a Campaign Director to lead the implementation of our flagship campaign to defend and secure strong, science-based and fair ocean policies during the current European policy cycle. Applicants should have strategic vision & credibility in senior policy spaces. Apply by 3 November:
🎙️ Seven years since the EU Landing Obligation, wasteful fish discarding continues to deplete fish populations - but the solutions exist. EJF and @oceanaeurope.bsky.social spoke at the @oceanographicmag.bsky.social roundtable about their latest report: open.file///Users/lmou...
The report lays out what is needed: selective fishing gear, digital monitoring and real transparency on what is caught, kept and thrown back. We do not need to reopen the Common Fisheries Policy. To save fish populations & protect fishers, we need to ensure it is actually implemented and enforced.
⚠️ The chemicals in commonly used plastic items pose a serious and ever-present risk to human health - yet they remain unregulated and unmonitored. Hormone disruption is just one of the many risks. Hear from Dr Stephanie Wright, @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social 🎬
🐟 The future of EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is currently under discussion. To weaken the CFP would mean undermining the EU’s credibility and hard-won progress. EU Member States should focus on stronger implementation, not a lowering of standards. Read the op-ed from Ambassador Peter Thomson:

This is not a problem people can solve through their own choices alone. The chemicals are present across thousands of ordinary products, most of them in the form of plastics, yet often unlabelled and invisible. The responsibility to act sits with industry and governments. Read the report:
These chemicals are in our food, homes and children's bodies, and almost none of them are controlled. Children are especially vulnerable, with exposure linked to attention disorders, cancer and lifelong reproductive harm. Watch the full film:
“We want to see legal, sustainable, and ethical seafood on our plates and in our markets.” Yesterday, EJF CEO and Founder Steve Trent spoke on a panel at OPAGAC’s Hands for the Ocean in @europarl.europa.eu. He called for transparency to end #IUU fishing and human rights abuses at sea. #OceanWeek
The Global Charter for Fisheries Transparency sets out a practical and low-cost set of principles that governments and industry can implement now. “What it needs is political will; it needs engagement from communities, and it needs us all to come together to do it collectively.”
The chemicals inside commonly used plastic products, from food containers and coffee cups to children's toys, threaten human health on a vast scale. More than half of these high-risk chemicals are not regulated at the international level or countries we reviewed. This is a public health emergency.
We’re making the case for a world where the products we use are safe by design. Governments must cut plastic production and control the most dangerous chemicals at source. Everyone should feel safe knowing that the cup they drink from and the toy their child holds will not make them ill.

"We never chose this, and we should have the right to reduce our exposure to plastics." Great overview in film of a new report on plastics from an environmental justice perspective by the @ejfoundation.org that I'm very pleased to have contributed to ejfoundation.org/films/poison...
Plastic has embedded itself in every aspect of our lives, with no signs of stopping. The chemicals inside commonly used plastic items, from toys to coffee cups, are silently poisoning us. We must end this threat to human health. It's time to reduce plastic production and consumption. 🗞️ @cnn.com:
Nearly 93% of known plastic chemicals used to wrap food and make clothes, toys, and other common household and personal care products pose a high risk to human health, according to a new investigation provided exclusively to CNN. https://cnn.it/46TldUc

Europe's fish populations are in crisis. The Landing Obligation was supposed to end wasteful discarding, yet seven years on, scientific evidence shows it's not working. @ejfoundation.org and Oceana have analysed what's needed to make it work. Read our briefing: europe.oceana.org/reports/maki...
🚨 We’re #Hiring a Global Programme Coordinator - Environmental Defenders We are looking for an experienced coordinator to strengthen and expand our programme to train, equip and support frontline campaigners and investigative journalists in the Global South. Apply by 6pm (UK) 9 October:
Europe's fish populations are in crisis. The Landing Obligation must be fully implemented to stop it. Nearly 50% of Irish Sea haddock and 80% of eastern English Channel plaice discarded. 7️⃣ years after entering into force, it is still unfulfilled. Our new analysis with @oceanaeurope.bsky.social:
Together, these three steps save fish populations and make the rules fair for all fishers. Read the summary report: ejfoundation.org/reports/maki...

International cooperation works when leaders show up. Whether they can deliver a strong, binding Global Plastics Treaty is a test of whether countries can still act together. On September 22, ministers are gathering at the UN General Assembly to discuss. Watch at 6:15 EDT: https://bit.ly/4cSjiTh
