Thought I'd throw in something alien-creepy today. Visited New Mexico a few years ago, & of course we made a beeline to Roswell. A fun memory from that excursion: cool shop at the UFO Museum. ericajurus.caHow horror affects your body if you enjoy being scaredMy hubby and I are not the target market for haunted attractions, if I’m being honest. We don’t get startled by jump scares. The first time we visited the Hudson River Valley in NY state, the home of Washington Irving’s famously haunted stories, and attended the best attraction we’ve ever been to, Headless Horseman Hayrides & Haunted Attractions, it was for the atmosphere.

ericajurus.caThe macabre lure and folklore of graveyardsThe wind was blowing heavily, pelting me with rain from darkened skies as I made my way up a narrow path to find the Hill of Tara in Ireland. My hubby elected to remain in the parking lot, safe and dry in our rental car, but I was determined to see, even briefly, the legendary seat of the High Kings of Ireland in ancient times.

ericajurus.caFaeries in history: cute / dangerous / eroticIf you lived in medieval times, you were constantly trying to ward off all the evil that fairies, magical beings who lurked in the woods, could foist upon you. Legends portrayed them as looking human, with a decided bent for trickery. They might be any size from tiny to our own height, possibly with wings. Some, like the will-o'-the-wisps, appeared as nebulous ghost lights that would lure you to your death in a swamp – such dancing lights are reported all the time across Asia, Europe, Great Britain, and both North and South America.

Long before fairies became cute little creatures, in folklore they were hazardous to humans. Tonight's blog post looks at the culture of the Fae in both old & modern literature, including my latest novel. #EricaJurusAuthor #ejchaosroads #ejroadsblog ericajurus.ca/page-blog-po... #booksky

ericajurus.caThe best season, and here’s why!“I’m here to stand up for Autumn!” That was my declaration at the beginning of my winning Table Topics Speech in Toastmasters one week. First, a little background: Toastmasters is a world-wide program for learning how to do public speaking. And I did. Before I joined the in-house club at the college I was working at, I seized up whenever I had to even introduce myself in job-related meetings.

To no one's surprise, I'm sure, I love a great b&w colour scheme, if it's not too severe. Why conventions and book festivals matter I wrote my first novel during the first COVID lockdown, and I thought that was the strangest thing I’d ever been, or was going to go, through.... https://ericajurus.ca/2026/09/15/why-conventions-and-book-festivals-matter/

ericajurus.caWhy conventions and book festivals matterI wrote my first novel during the first COVID lockdown, and I thought that was the strangest thing I’d ever been, or was going to go, through. I remember how surreal it felt to shuffle into a huge local arena with hundreds of other people to get our inoculations. To be hiding in our homes to prevent infection (while the son of a friend of mine was hanging on to life on a respirator after having contracted the disease).

ericajurus.caSome of us prefer darknessMaybe I am a vampire. My hubby’s been insisting for a while. For the most part, I don’t like sunny days – except for photography, and in the winter when they perk up the weeks of dreariness. I prefer my days cloud-covered and moody, and if there’s a bit of rain or fog, even better. Summer is definitely not my season; give me Fall with dense clouds and a spooky chill in the air.
