When Joe Bob Briggs hosted Night of the Living Dead on The Last Drive-In, he had an idea that the space probe from Venus that radiated the world was a Soviet Venera probe blown up by the US military. I made some renders of this hypothetical sequence. (Made with Blender)

Integrated Interplanetary Vehicle flying over Venus. This is my design for a joint US-Soviet spacecraft for missions to Venus or Mars. (Made with Blender. Background: edited NASA public domain picture.)

J-SAR, my own design for a science mission I'd like to see: flying a weather radar around Jupiter to study the dynamics of its atmosphere. (Made with Blender)

KH-11, the NRO's highly classified spy satellite. The first renders are an early model, the second set the Block IV. There are few images of KH-11s, so these are my extrapolations based on available information. (Made with Blender, Earth backgrounds from NASA public domain)

DS9 episode where Quark buys the Lament Configuration from a strange alien, can't open it, Rom steals it and opens it in one shot, Garak inexplicably knows a lot about it and Weyoun shows up with a mad scientist scheme save Rom from hell.

An early Space Shuttle concept was to rendezvous with Skylab and use a space tug called the Teleoperator Retrieval System to boost it into a higher orbit. Ultimately it was cancelled. (The Shuttle would be farther away, but I fudged it a little) (Blender + NASA public domain)

A personal Star Trek design, the USS Harmony, NCC-80000, Concord-Class. It's a diplomatic vessel built immediately after the Dominion War, tasked with putting the Alpha Quadrant back together and integrating Gamma Quadrant civilizations into the Federation. (Blender) Info below:

It has very few weapons, so we would have to come up with clever ways out of tough situations. It would also explore the difficulty of transitioning Starfleet from a military force back to an exploratory/diplomatic force.

It has only basic defensive armament. If it really gets into trouble, it would have to call for backup. If it’s traveling into a potentially hostile territory, it would have to rely on a supporting fleet of vessels more suited for combat.

If they were to put me in charge of Star Trek, this would be the hero ship for my show, Star Trek: Harmony. It would be about post-war diplomacy, navigating the same difficult terrain nations faced after World War II.

Because this is a diplomatic vessel, the Harmony is designed so as to look strikingly different than the ships that participated in the Dominion War, which is why its primary hull takes on a circular shape. Just by looking at it, you’d have a hard time thinking it was a warship.

Good on Zero Company for making droids feel threatening to me for the first time. Hailfire droids were always a threat, but now I'm like oh god a B2 Battle Droid how am I going to survive?!

The bombers in the TLJ are fine. Real starfighter knowers know that bombs always go down in the flight sim games. Horton Salm disapproves of your ignorance of space bombing techniques.

Qian Xuesen's 1949 concept for a commercial spaceplane, designed to carry 10 passengers from New York to LA in 45 minutes. (Render made with Blender, backgrounds NASA public domain)

In my story "Strategic Hypostasis" a nuclear war breaks out in 2029. A theme in it is the general public's unawareness that our government's deterrence policy didn't end with the Cold War. This article is the sort of thing I was getting at. Story link: www.unlikelystories.org/content/stra...

The Integrated Interplanetary Vehicle, my design for an alternate history joint US-Soviet vehicle for exploring Mars (first picture) and Venus (second picture). Renders made with Blender (Edited NASA public domain images for the backgrounds)

Integrated Interplanetary Vehicle (IIV), my own design for a Cold War era joint Soviet-US spacecraft. NASA would be in charge of the NERVA rockets, transfer capsule, and S-IVB workshop, the Soviets would be in charge of the other crew accommodations and scientific systems. (Made with Blender)

I recently got a short story published about a civilization that finds itself in a related and unusual situation: lots of detectable technosignatures, but no way to reach the civilizations sending them. perseidprophecies.ca/issue-10-sum...

I do wonder what we'd actually do in a realistic first contact scenario. Interstellar travel seems to be extremely difficult if not impossible. So the two sides would never meet. And any civilization outside 50 ly makes one call-and-response cycle longer than a human lifespan.

Over on Twitter they are talking about solutions to the Fermi Paradox. Mine is that space is huge, we haven't been looking that long, and separating the hypothetical signatures of alien civilizations from random radio noise is significantly harder than most people think.

I don't really think it's a paradox. It's one of those things where science fiction and science reality are a little too mixed together in people's minds.

You'd hope the NASA administrator would understand the difference between Congress funding his administration and him personally donating $3 million to a super-PAC supporting his boss.

For the record, I've never been happy about the rise of Isaacman. It was pretty obvious that this was how things were going to go. You just had to look beyond the rockets.

Tongren space station, my design for a joint US-Chinese lunar orbiting station, roughly based on Hexagram 13 of the I Ching. (Renders made with Blender)
