How about we mandate standards of content moderation with a well-resourced complaints and enforcement system funded by a cost recovery levy on the platforms?

mariecolemanao.bsky.social@mariecolemanao.bsky.social

Absolutely. If they are by law responsible for what they publish. Then open to legal action.

Attribution also very important for potential litigation because in the end it is only being hit with financial pain that motivates those in charge of corporations to change. Apparently their children’s futures are not sufficiently important

KetAnthropic JoshAI@ketanjoshi.co

This is a great @ayeshatandon.carbonbrief.org video on attribution science + Ayesha's dog is the best Srsly though I think attribution science really fills one of the most significant gaps in climate communication and advocacy, this is so so so so important www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1Lc...

The violence we refuse to name theshot.net.au/news/opinion... “The ugly truth is that in Australia raging angry men have been running women down with cars, setting fire to them, bashing children, killing and raping, burning them, throwing their bodies in rubbish dumps and doing whatever they like”

theshot.net.auThe violence we still refuse to name - The ShotMeanwhile, Australian women continue to live with the consequences.

Hey @news.abc.net.au as you are running a constant update on the Helen Haines situation, how about including a review of all the women who’ve been run over by angry men in cars in Australia, to add some important context (See @ronnisalt.bsky.social in The Shot)

Replying to @daryltractor.bsky.social

Seeing one outlet after another furnish us with Hanson’s take on it is sickening too. Any of them with actual guts should be asking her if she acknowledges the leading role her disgusting party and its backers have played in radicalising people to the point of doing things like this.

Penny Wong “hits out” with a media statement. How about sanctions?

Simon Rosenberg@simonrosenberg.bsky.social

It's an insult to our intelligence that Penny Wong pretends to find the Israeli ambassador's response insulting. When her government provides diplomatic cover and weapons parts to his regime, so they can murder aid workers, health staff, journalists and Palestinian civilians with impunity. #auspol

The tech bro owners of the algorithms could turn down the hate but they choose to escalate it

Victoria Fielding@drvicfielding.bsky.social

Shocking to hear the news about the suspected attack on MP Helen Haines. If this was politically motivated, it’s a sign that Australian politics has reached a new low. It’s time to turn the temperature down - there’s too much hatred, abuse, division and disinformation. It’s radicalising people.

It's inexcusable, ABC, to not state clearly that this is PALESTINIAN land. Those attacking & destroying lives & olive trees are not "settlers". They're ILLEGAL INVADERS, seeking to remove the existing & rightful inhabitants by destroying their means of existence & in many cases killing them. #Auspol

Unbelievable that a Liberal leader can speak sanctimoniously about the horrors of a guest worker economy when the LNP actively created just that during their 9 years in government, so business would have a ready supply of cheap and compliant workers

Australia was once a strong supporter of international law and very active in its development and promotion. Sad to see this crumble away in order to kowtow to the prime destroyer of the rules-based order

Irrespective of Finkel’s capability as a scientist, the question of what consideration should be given to Scope 3 emissions in a planning process is a legal and policy issue not a scientific one

Tim Baxter@timinclimate.naruresearch.com.au

Alan Finkel is such a fucking idiot. The man is intellectually outclassed by a not-very-bright newt. He fundamentally does not understand at least 60% of the issues he talks about. "I was Chief Scientist. Why are you giving me column inches to discuss a topic I have no understanding of?"

The utter, utter stupidity … Cratering our higher education sector, with regional areas hit hardest, to pander to One Nation immigration politics. They pegged uni finances on intl students, and then started attacking the student visa intake.

Meanwhile the LNP is back to denialism and axing renewable energy and the ALP keeps approving coal mining. Climate criminals!

What’s happening to our climate is utterly terrifying. We’re looking at 4 degrees above average this southern summer www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I hope Speers is going to ask him some probing questions about abandoning climate action.

In what way does the Albanese government have any credibility on climate action? #COP31

Australian Conservation Foundation@ausconservation.bsky.social

In Fiji, the Albanese govt will ask Pacific countries to trust its leadership on climate, while at home it considers approving Woodside’s Browse gas project, fracking in the NT’s Beetaloo and a big coal mine expansion in the Hunter Valley. #auspol www.acf.org.au/news/fiji-pr...

Bring it on. Drought then floods - Americans should understand what “drill baby drill” is going to mean for them

The New York Times@nytimes.com

Rain from a hurricane that made landfall in Mexico was threatening to inundate drought-stricken parts of Texas that haven’t seen heavy rain, or any rain, in months. Other pockets of the Central U.S. also faced the threat of heavy rain, which could lead to flash flooding.

But yeah let’s prioritise short term economic benefits and keep burning coal like it doesn’t matter we’re destroying the systems our whole societies and lives depend on 😖

Glen@gergyl.bsky.social

Five percent in one year!

NSW Net Zero Commission said only last year that coal mining should not continue to be approved or expanded. Seems the IPC is choosing not to listen to the expert advice

Fossil fuel producers absolutely should pay for climate disasters because they are what’s causing it

Doug Parr@dougparr.bsky.social

Spain wants to tax fossil fuel producers in order to fund climate adaptation An application of the 'polluter pays' principle Economists estimate cost of climate-change induced drought in Europe this summer was €50bn, one bank says €180bn Someone's got to pay for it www.ft.com/content/86da...

So much to grieve

The New York Times@nytimes.com

The world has failed in its goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial times, the UN said on Wednesday, in a sober assessment that laid out a new goal for fighting climate change that would set the world on an uncertain path.

It was a deliberate policy. They knew it was not their land. The world stood by and let them do it, knowing that it was never going to kick them out in order to ensure a viable territory for Palestine. But kicking them out is what should happen.

How about this - “warning signs have been visible for YEARS that climate change will cause increasing disaster and death but we keep choosing to do nothing about it”

This is like saying every time a woman is killed by her partner , now is not the time to talk about domestic violence. But of course we don’t say that. We say, every time, something must be done about domestic violence! Same should apply to climate caused disasters

KetAnthropic JoshAI@ketanjoshi.co

"Now is not the time" is actually true, if you're a fossil fuel company or a politician trying to enable fossil fuels. Albanese, Woodside, Exxon, News Corp - they all rely on there being no connection between fossil fuels (the cause) and worsening disasters (the effect)

Seems a good time to remind us all that science has been telling us for quite some time where we are heading

the moon report 🌕@seachanger.bsky.social

this is annoying of me to post, but i really was dead scared about this climate reality in like 1997. people are surprised that the earth's habitability could break down within a human lifespan but the science was mostly all there 30 years ago and available to anyone willing to reckon with it

The Int Court of Justice has ruled that nation States can be liable for harm caused by not doing their utmost to prevent climate change, including allowing private corporations to drill and burn fossil fuels. Nepal could sue FF producing nations for reparations

Empty words from Penny Wong. Expel the ambassador! The IDF has deliberately and unlawfully killed an Australian citizen. What does it take for Australia to genuinely condemn the war crimes of Israel?? @senatorwong.bsky.social

South Korea wouldn’t join the war against Iran so the US is siding with North Korea who (checks notes) is an actual ally and supplier of military technology to Iran 🤷‍♀️

These poll questions are so meaningless. People should be asked to choose - do you want fruit and vegetables harvested or would you prefer fewer people on working holiday visas? Visa reductions have consequences for Australians that aren’t being duscussed www.smh.com.au/politics/fed...
