Most people aren't thinking about the products they use and the lack of data privacy laws. I don't believe it's fair to ask them to become experts in the subject just to be aware targeted ad revenue is going to be critical to these lossy companies padding their bottom line ahead of an IPO.

Most ChatGPT users probably don’t know you can be specifically targeted on the platform by advertisers based on your email, phone number, or unique phone identifier.

How to kill without firing a shot.

Hoodlum 🇺🇸@nothoodlum.bsky.social

Google searches for health disinformation plunged after Ukrainian strikes on Russian data centers. How much “turbo cancer” & ivermectin nonsense is fueled by Russian bots, and how many Americans have they killed? Bots spread disinformation. Humans search for it. When bots go down, so do searches.

Yeesh... In these fraught political times, do you, the entertainer, sign up for any project where the script is described as 'complicated,' without asking them to send over the entire screenplay first?

So Danny Trejo was manipulated and tricked into being in Ben Shapiro's newest film. Holy shit.

Sam Altman said people are just gonna have to die in order to implement AI. In the very same week, Anthropic claimed it’s a human rights violation to be mean to the computer. These people need to be held accountable. They think lines of code are a person with rights but living people are debris.

The Verge@theverge.com

Over the past year, Anthropic has repeatedly flirted with the idea that its AI models could be conscious in some way. In February, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said on a podcast, “We don’t know if the models are conscious.”

An excerpt: "I’m not worried about these kinds of leaders failing, I am worried about them succeeding. I am worried about the kind of world where callous leaders misallocate diminished resources, where we have no say in the harms inflicted on others, where abstract imperatives outweigh real lives."

Revenge for MeToo (which severely constrained their ability to rape employees), Revenge for Black Lives Matter (which called out how racist many of them were) and most of all Revenge for the 2021 Labor Market where they suddenly had to compete for scarce labor instead of the other way around

It's incredibly *weird* that members of the admin quote these sources out in the open, yet if you cite it as appeals to Nazism (which it most certainly is), people chide for you for 'exaggerating.'

Cameron 🇺🇸🗽🦅@cameroncorduroy.bsky.social

the Vice President of the United States has gone on record citing this man as one of his biggest intellectual influences if you didn't know this, it's probably because for some reason literally no mainstream political media outlets think it's worth mentioning

I'm not aware of Vance ever retracting his endorsement of Yarvin. Why is the second most powerful man in the free world supporting extremely fringe, extremely un-American beliefs? And why has no journalist asked him about this?

Imagine the Manhattan Project wasn't run by gov scientists to win a world war, but rather run by the greediest POS in the world for the sake of getting even more money they don't need and will never spend. Then imagine if the Manhattan Project shared their weapon with every bad actor on earth.

Too bad no one funded a sex cult focused on climate change! The different media dynamics between the very real threat of global warming (aloofness) and the imagined AI machine apocalypse (alarm) should be studied in great depth.

Even a generation ago, if you told people "you will be added to a government database for tracking purposes if you speak out," folks would be in an uproar.

NEW: DHS agents tracked people observing ICE arrests, photographed them, ran their plates, pulled personal information, and added them to a Palantir database, according to newly unsealed court filings. w/ @regret.bsky.social

I do think they probably ran his texts through an LLM and it hallucinated crimes. That’s scary and bad and it’s funny they got caught, but imagine how many other times this happens on a day to day basis against people with no rights, let alone the ability to publicly humiliate the AI prosecutor.

🤡 Schmitt beclowns himself 🤡 Schmitt concocted an elaborate conspiracy theory that Smith traveled to Atl for a Hawks game and to collude with Fani Willis, & flashed his "evidence" before accusing Smith of perjury. There's just one problem -- his facts were totally wrong. Here's the whole sequence:

Jack Smith: "History teaches that the rule of law is rarely destroyed all at once. It's often weakened by attacks on the institutions and the public servants sworn to uphold it. Since January 2025, we have witnessed precisely such an effort."

Quoting Jean Paul Sartre and having the response be, "Did he say that?! I always hated that guy" is usually a cue that you're hanging out with chuds and in mortal danger of enchudification. Duncan, your heel turn is nigh complete.

I know it's dangerous to pedestal politicians, but our governor has time &again refused to take the bait on throwing any vulnerable group under the bus, and I'm mighty grateful for both the steadfast decency that he has shown to date, and the kind, invitational correctives he offers his errant peers

Watching the film BRENDA STARR (1989). Very much a direct comic adaptation, and has a exaggerated stylisms of the format. Brenda's wardrobe in particular are a lot of bespoke costumes that make sense on the comic book page but over the top in comparison to actual mid-century clothing. #Filmsky

One wonders if this movie could have landed, but one also wonders exactly what the built-in audience for this film was? Some well choreographed onscreen gags and some well delivered lines but it's a very much a hit or miss effort.

An interesting glimpse along with the other 80's comic contemporaries, Robert Altman's POPEYE (1980) and Warren Beatty's DICK TRACY (1990).

By no means the most important topic, but... The attempt to rebrand The Kennedy Center feels a very particular vein of cruel and shallow. As though we don't live in the shadow of 30 years of conservatives hollowing out support for the National Endowment for the Arts, Radio Free Europe, NPR, PBS...

At no point in my adult lifetime has there been any conservative that wanted to invest in the arts, short of as a vehicle for wealth-extraction. Why should they be honored with patronage over the thing they despise?

It's vastly more comforting to believe in an imminent robot apocalypse than the truth: the things that will destroy us are extensions of the unsexy but obvious problems all around us. We are not doomed in one grand way, but a thousand petty small ways.

Dave Willner@dwillner.bsky.social

Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.

It's difficult to pick apart fears about AI & data centers that are intrinsic to the technologies vs. those that are connected to the fact that giant, fateful decisions about these things are being made by a small handful of insular brain-cooked oligarch narcissists.

Was thinking today about how bifurcated and paywalled the Internet has become and how we've all tacitly accepted "I can't read this content, I can't follow this creator, etc."

I have no qualms with a publication hiding articles for paying subscribers, but sites like Instagram that benefit from free user content *AND* marketing data? Unforgivable.

Reflecting back on 9/11 today. I watched it happen in real-time. I also visited Windows on the World as a kid, when I was maybe 6, a place that ceased to exist when the towers fell.

I don't look fondly on the form of exploitative capitalism we have, and I am not naïve enough to pretend those fissures didn't always exist. That said, I do feel like the attack on the WTC was a deliberate attempt to fracture the unity the world was undergoing as we moved towards a global society.

To paraphrase a show I enjoyed a lot, "Halt and Catch Fire," capitalism isn't the thing -‐ it's the thing that gets us to thing. And that thing is the power of trade and new ideas to bring people together and bridge the divides of the world.

"I have yet to encounter a single person in my life who uses algebra." Not really the flex that you think it is, dude.

Elad Nehorai@eladn.bsky.social

Here is a guest on Tucker Carlson’s podcast saying that algebra is a conspiracy by the Jews to turn people into “good little goy slaves.” I wish I was joking.

It's *secretive.* Thus, it's far too important for you, the group being 'protected,' to have any mechanism for regulatory oversight until this inevitably leads to a swarm of additional false-positives and petty abuse cases.
