Doncaster, 1979. 40073 waits at Doncaster with a northbound car carrier. I’m covering a Leeds job tonight, a night turn. Not driving a car carrier tho, but long and heavy intermodal train. I don’t mind nights and it’s rest day work, so mustn’t grumble… 📷 S Sienkiewicz

Darlington train shed. On my way Middlesbrough to bring the Teesport to Doncaster Railport intermodal train back to South Yorkshire. Should get back in time for the eclipse! 🌑

I carry the papers into the shop and pull the bundles open before the shopkeeper has found the scissors. She wishes me good luck with my lottery ticket. As I leave I realise I haven’t seen The Bloke With The Dog and The Bloke With Two Dogs for a while.

I bet Elon Musk didn’t have going down in history as a filthy, traitorous murderer by proxy of innocent children and civilians on his bingo card for this year. Should’ve stuck to the electric cars thing, lad…

Jolly Angler, Manchester (sadly closed in 2020), painting by Seanna Doonan. Artwork for The McGoldrick Family album cover.

Travelling pass to Nottingham. Virtually empty train. Bloke gets on at Newark, sits opposite me, proceeds to eat his home made egg mayonnaise breakfast with a spoon. Straining every sinew to not give him a bollocking. People suck.

I remember the world before the internet. It wasn’t unconnected. It wasn’t inconvenient. I remember when we read books, newspapers, used pens, wrote letters, used cash. I remember watching the news at 5:45 and that was enough news. It was absolutely fine.

Don't get distracted by all the daily bullshit from Trump and his remaining loyalists. The central dynamic unfolding right now is how Trump and the US government are losing control of events at home and abroad. A post-American order looks increasingly possible.

Trump announces unilaterally that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to a mutual energy ceasefire. Two hours later: Russia launches a cruise missile attack on Kharkiv’s CHP-5 thermal power plant. Trump continues to be proved a stupid old arsehole by Putin…

A polite reminder for Americans and the USA. Great Britain was literally the greatest and richest empire in the history of man. Ever. Then one day it wasn’t. Think about it.

I spelled out "superpower suicide" in this essay from May 2026. Empires have risen and failed before, but to my knowledge no state has ever chosen to kill its own power, and succeeded with such rapidity. snyder.substack.com/p/on-superpo...

Tim Snyder: The term that I came up with… is superpower suicide. I just can’t see an example of a major country losing so much power so quickly as the United States under Trump. We’ve encouraged our enemies and we’ve made our allies not trust us.

What Trump and Hegseth are saying is that one of the most powerful squadrons in the US Air Force, the most power air force in human history, has been scared off by 5 half wits in a transit van. Trump is turning you into a laughing stock, lads.

Jesus, it’s a bit early for this confected shite isn’t it? Can’t we get Poppy rage out of the way first, please..?

No great loss. I pay more tax than he does. He was a registered non dom until 2025 when non dom status was rightly abolished. So, naturally he’s legging it. The sooner we have US worldwide style tax rules for those who live abroad, the better.

Dear Diary Had a really good first day at my new job as delivery manager for a little fuel company called Fuel2You. Feeling good about this one…

Not entirely sure, but if one was caught red handed with a transit van or three full of explosives next to a major military establishment, one, most probably, wouldn’t be granted bail. Just saying, like…

I’m just guessing here, but I reckon they were nicking diesel from farms in Gloucestershire and the surrounding area to sell on the black market. I could be wrong…

SPaD dream last night. Very real. Ruined my day. Then I was driving a bus 😁 🤷🏻‍♂️ 28 years in, and still having SPaD dreams! When will it ever end?! 🔴

Oh well. At least Nigel had enough time to get his bed plumped and feathered…

The other place is mental today, and it’s only 09:10 GMT! What with Reformers choking on their porridge over the latest polling and Trump banning journalists, it seems like some are not coping too well with the rebalancing. I may need popcorn 🍿

Up to the top of Tinsley mountain for breakfast. Hiding under Sheffield Parkway while they unload my train… 🚂🟧⬛️🟧⬛️🟧💨

I find it odd that Reform complains about the 10s of 1000s of individual British workers contributing to the Labour Party via their union subs and how this can influence politics, but their £77m received from two offshore donors has no political influence at all. Very odd…

NB. Union member individual contributions are voluntary. As an individual you can withdraw from the political fund at anytime; and not all unions are affiliated with the Labour Party.

Casino Sanremo 🇮🇹 I’ve just asked the fella on the door if I can have a go on the 2p slots. He said, “getta benta” 🤌

To be fair, Milei can declare what ever he likes. Makes absolutely no difference whatsoever. He can’t do anything about it. Also, Trump is a prick.
