A pattern here is anti trans changes made under a labour government are assumed to be "reasonable and moderate" by people who would oppose them if a right wing government was doing them. This is worse for trans people because cis people just don't believe us when we talk about what is happening.

Having social media access made growing up gay 1 million times easier (I don’t think I would even know I was gay as a teen if it weren’t for social media), but it also made growing up progressive and informed possible. Social media was where I learned about abortion rights, for starters

Highlighting the speaker who stood in front of the Surprise mayor and told him to consider what the Mayor of Ohrdruf must’ve thought before he died by suicide: “He might have thought ‘how is this my fault I had no jurisdiction over this’ maybe he said ‘this site was not subject to local zoning.’”

Did you know that teachers earn considerably above the national average? Teachers are underpaid because their jobs are brutal and require lots of education, and are intended to be lifelong occupations. But teachers are not "working class" by any coherent definition

What the fuck is up with meme pages? Despite having "Reject Apartheid" in their description, like half of their posts are pro-Rhodesia. I'd be offended that this had been suggested if like half of Facebook's suggestions weren't already random boomer and/or bigoted shit.

"Your voice is represented in government by your MP!" Is it? 65% of the riding voted for him. My disagreements (eg: whether I should be sent to a concentration camp to make me cis) have no weight. Every time I have spoken with an MP or MPP, they have brushed me off *because they don't need me*.

I cannot say that I live in a democracy when I have never had any say in anything. I have never even voted for a winning candidate—ever. And every time I try to go through the official channels for getting my voice heard (contacting my MP/MPP), I am reminded of this.

The closest I've been to having representation was... living in a riding that didn't have a conservative MP for one month. Which has nothing to do with my supposed voice in government.

History repeats itself. I just saw someone who was *two* when this happened suggest people do this sort of thing ("make up our own sayings among the community") for chess.

Got a new passport photo taken. They wrote some info on the envelope to identify it. It’s a CANadian PASSport, so they wrote an affirming message:

Odd interaction on the other site. Someone opposed nuclear power on the grounds that it requires mining. I pointed out that most renewable energy requires mining. I am apparently a mining shill because of this, and they blocked me when I asked how they intend to transition from fossil fuels.

Ohhh. They probably don’t want more uranium mining in Saskatchewan—hence calling any pro-nuclear voices mining industry shills—but don’t extend that stance overseas.

Turns out it won't do that. Unless someone makes a feed specifically for a language, or perhaps, cleverly, makes one that shows you posts from all your selected languages equally, there's basically no chance of that happening unless someone else "in my network" interacts with it.

If this site wants to algorithmically show me some post-1500 Occitan-language posts, I wholeheartedly welcome it

Bonus: It relies entirely on self-reporting the language of your post, so it's easy to just... not do that. When I turned off English, all I saw were posts consisting solely of an image, because a 6-minute-old Dutch post I'd seen was tagged as English—probably for the best, maximizing the audience.

Bonus: Everything still shows up in the Following feed, though. Maybe also when you click on posts. Hierdie skeet is af Afrikaans geskeet. As jy dit kan sien, it means that clicking on a post must take you out of the Algorithmic Feed system, rendering your language choices moot.

And actually, it would also require the person making the post to have utterly throttled their potential audience by explicitly selecting that language rather than English when making the post. So I don't think I'll ever be algorithmically shown a post in most of those languages, if any are made.

It got better after the world ended today.

Okay, since I left this place last people have stopped talking about Twitter so much but are still talking a lot about what BlueSky is... which is progress I guess?

You are up to date.
