Hey, I’m Emmett and I write queer horror. My debut novel is From the Belly, and I co-created Let Me Out with George Williams. I’m also the Narrative director & cofounder of Perfect Garbage Studios, where we’re making Grave Seasons. 🔪 www.emmettnahil.com

Had an incredible and healing solo NYC trip. Slung books and comics with Brooklyn Spec Fic Writers, had some good arab food with friends, saw one of my favorite bands at the new shiny-shiny Saint Vitus, and signed books at the Twisted Spine. What a week.

obviously the Bioware closure is a travesty, but what's really getting me is the amount of people my age who went into games, specifically into narrative design, after playing a Bioware game.

no game is perfect, and certainly no game narrative is flawless, but Dragon Age 2 changed my brain chemistry!! outside of the obvious human cost of these closures, it's absolutely fucked to think about how many people will only see that now as a vestige of a lost era.

as @ayshaufarah.bsky.social has said, seeing queerness be treated as a serious plot point that can and should impact the story of the game you're playing felt revolutionary for me at that time. It changed how I saw the possibilities of games narrative man

It's an incredible honor to see so much love for Grave Seasons. Thank you so much, we're looking forward to everyone getting to experience the horrors!!

We reached 750,000 wishlists on Steam! Thank you all SO MUCH for the ongoing support and enthusiasm for Grave Seasons. It means the world to our team to see folks as excited about the game as we are 🥹 The town of Ashenridge welcomes you on March 9, 2027! 🪦🌾

art is the one avenue where you can express this stuff and not immediately get shut down. you can't say this stuff in real life because you have to consider other people's feelings, but art isn't real life. i don't have to worry if i'm too raw for the reader. they can always just stop reading.

art is weird to exist as a commercial product, because it's not just for the "consumer." if the consumer gets something out of it, great! i'm glad. but it's mostly for the artist to work things out that cannot be spoken. it's expressing ideas that cannot be expressed

I do think the disdain people have started to hold for the term “elevated horror” should probably also be extended to the term “literary horror”. distinction that feels worse than saying, for instance, “a literary book with horror elements” or “speculative fiction”

Happy Halloween all the human-made work that you have labeled shlock is also art if the viewer or reader perceives it as such. Duchamp died for all our sins

Important distinction I forgot to make: I blame marketers and the influencer space for this slippage. Authors and editors, by and large, I’ve found, talk about this with mute care and nuance.

I’ve seen it being used as a distinction that seems to imply “horror with literary merit” rather than as a genuine genre caveat, and uhh feels bad! I don’t like it!

I understand that some people don’t use it in this way, but I don’t particularly enjoy the implication that like. Genre fiction must inherit or adopt the signs and signifiers of the mainstream in order to be taken seriously as art

Still very much looking forward to Grave Seasons, it looks very interesting, and I'm really intrigued about the murder mystery aspect.

Still looking for writing work! Been about four months. I know everything is on fire, but still looking.

If anyone is looking to hire a Peabody and BAFTA winning senior writer, I am looking for work. I’ve got six years experience in games. Everything from indie to AAA. I am not married to staying in games. I am hoping to relocate to the Bay Area. I am keeping my ears to the ground.

featuring yours truly, believe it or not! hope you enjoy.

being officially out on novel submission again really has you feeling like that one gif of stacker pentacost yelling 'reset the clock' with a dour look on his face

it took almost 250ish retweets on that last thread from the other day to start getting predictably bean-soupish comments, which honestly is better than twitter was towards the end. it's enough to make you almost proud

the crazy thing about making time for any creative pursuit is that you literally have to do what you have a gut-deep yearning to do or else you'll see other people doing it, and it WILL make you insane.

My source is that I love designing narrative video games. I love making video games with my best friend and my beloved coworkers. However, I also love writing horror novels, and writing in one arena but not the other is not what I Need to Do to feel creatively fulfilled.

From the outside looking in it's All Writing, Kind of, and in a way it is? but the creative processes are entirely different, with completely different goals. Your aspirations are PARTICULAR and specific, moreso than you might realize.

what i'm saying is that you may think you're subliminating your own creative desires effectively, but 9 times out of 10, it does not work. prioritize your own goals in the time you have and you will feel better about yourself and the world around you

the crazy thing about making time for any creative pursuit is that you literally have to do what you have a gut-deep yearning to do or else you'll see other people doing it, and it WILL make you insane.

genuinely unfulfilled purpose will make you a way worse person to yourself and to everyone around you!! or you'll become an asshole online, which seems to be the case for a lot of people

and fwiw "fulfilled purpose" doesn't mean getting a crazy publishing deal or like. earning a ton of money from your passions, but it DOES mean executing a vision you have and expressing yourself spiritually

After putting a ton of hard work in, we found that console work, crushing bugs, and testing every bit of our game needed some more time. With just a bit more polish and porting work to go, we’re excited for players to reap the harvest across all platforms in just a few months!
