“In short, the Map is useless, but you are advised to keep consulting it, because it is the only one you will get. And, be warned. If you take this Tour, you are going to have to visit every single place on this Map, whether it is marked or not. This is a Rule . . . .” — Diana Wynne Jones

I don’t know when WSB wrote this in the copy I’d sent him, except that it would have been over 28 yrs ago, on July 31, in Lawrence. Leary had encouraged him to read Neuromancer and he’d liked it, which thrilled me. We hadn’t yet met, and wouldn’t for a few yrs.

Thanks Rudy ! The Penrose triangle was drawn by the amazing John Coulthart ( @johncoulthart.com ) for the Endless Bookshelf. Shirts will be printed in NJ and ready in November (at special subscriber price through next Thursday)

This strip ran on February 8, 1993, a couple of months after the movie came out, so it’s possible that Schulz knew the film rather than the book. But we do know Snoopy is a serous reader (see his frequent references to Anna Karenina), so let’s assume he is a fan of the novella.

this will be great, you should come, too ! / thank you @gavingrant.bsky.social / and thank you, @jwomack.bsky.social [when Jack Womack speaks, people listen]

If my publisher were to hand me LLM back cover copy I would definitely be looking to move.

More than two dozen workers at three major publishing houses—HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, and Hachette—tell WIRED that LLMs are being used for publicity, cover art, back cover copy, and emails, as some execs push junior staff to champion the tech. Read the full story: buff.ly/p0ymGmN

current reading : — Larry McMurtry. Sacagawea’s Necklace. Essays on the American West. New York Review Books, [2001]. Great stuff, facts, attitudes, opinions, clearly stated. The closing paragraphs of “The West without Chili” are deft and funny and true.

My new novel is out a week from today — tough timing because of the election & uh, you know, the world. With book reviews an extinct species, it's hard to get the word out. So tell your friends! Meanwhile, I've started the next one, folkish horror set in a bog at a remote Maine hunting camp. Onward!
