NBC/Peacock’s opening game the night before averaged 25.1 million average viewers, which is just much bigger than Netflix (or Prime Video). That’s the big caveat to all streaming viewership records: even in success, they can’t compete with traditional linear TV.

This one touches on everything from the “binge versus weekly” debate to the “football trap” to the “hire the opposite” trend to the “why I don’t judge creative exec hires” to “price to earnings hype” to “UX changes" to…well, a bunch more! All in one place! entertainment.substack.com/p/netflixs-l...

entertainment.substack.comNetflix’s Leadership Shake Up…ExplainedThe Most Important Story of the Week for 24-Oct-2026

Plan to put out an article tomorrow about all the turbulence at that one streamer, explained in one chart. (Who am I kidding? There’s absolutely NO WAY I keep it to one chart. We’ll be lucky if my “visual of the week” includes fewer than ten bespoke charts!)

That diminished Disney+ output reflects a wider downsizing across the streaming landscape—but also, perhaps, an overcorrection to an overcorrection by a service that’s searching for a happy medium in the speed of its streaming assembly line.”

Damn. That’s both excellent analysis and excellent writing. And the article has a terrific visual as well. (I should admit that I was interviewed for the piece, but that doesn’t change the fact that you should read it.)

As @mattbelloni.bsky.social first broke: Bela’s out, Peter is in. I asked one top agent who knows the Netflix teams well why this happened. Their answer? “Stock price. Can’t blame yourself. So, someone has to take the hit.” The “yourself” refers to Ted Sarandos.

I just debunked the “reading is dead” narrative--as have others!--but it’s still hard to build a reading habit. But as a worker, arguably it’s the most important thing you can do. Heck, as a human it’s important. Here’s Cal Newport on it in a must read. calnewport.com/why-reading-...

Listen, I dunk on USC as much as anyone. Because of fandom reasons. But at the start of the football season everyone dunked on them for an empty stadium in August. It was empty because of the heat! Seriously, the world’s heat problems could threaten football. www.ocregister.com/2026/09/04/a...

So let’s think about this logically. The Emmy telecast started at 8:00 PM Eastern. That’s 2:00 AM in Paris. How many French people are waking up in the middle of the night to watch the broadcast? What about China? It’s 8:00 AM. Seriously, time zones exist people! It’s not some secret.

And yes, when I say “we”, I mean society. Markets don’t exist in a vacuum and don’t structure themselves. Either governments control market structures or market participants will. And those participants will naturally consolidate. So we should ensure competition.

Ask someone signing up to a Patreon or Substack if they want Apple to take 30% of their fee. Or if someone going to a Taylor Swift concert thinks TicketMaster-Live Nation should get 50% of that their ticket price. They don’t!

But the worst part is that the folks who you'd think care abou this the most--the free market/neo-liberal types, who value markets and their open information--actually usually defend it!

The point that really stuck with me in this one was about the "not knowing". My industry--entertainment--has a huge issue with that with Amazon, Google and Apple's spending. How much do they make on streaming? Or lose? Why don't we know?t!
