The fact there is no grand bargain to be had between the US and China on AI must not become an excuse for inaction. Beijing prizes political security, but the alarming incidents recently have caught their attention and create an opening for first steps

Xi on track to land in DC tonight with a deceptively modest goal: keep things basically as they are. Extend the trade truce. Push off pressure over Taiwan. Give Trump the cordial relationship he values. Above all, prolong what Beijing sees as a window of geopolitical opportunity.

“In Beijing, a think tank at Renmin University recently published an assessment titled “Thank Trump,” which wryly hailed his efforts to hasten the “twilight of an empire,” by undermining America’s alliances, civil service, scientific institutions, and democratic credibility.”

5/5 The contest is not simply over speed. China has too much power in Xi and his cohort; America has too much in Trump and his Silicon Valley allies. The edge will go to the country that resists ideology and corruption—and gives people agency in their future. Read: www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

1/5 I went back to China to parse what is real tech from what is hype. The clearest fact: the depth of an alternative technological universe: ubiquitous E.V.s, more clinical trials than the U.S.; A.I. systems reaching into workplaces, schools, and even neighborhood trash bins.

4/5 While America has plunged into distractions, China has raced toward the future—helped by Trump’s tariffs, immigration restrictions, attacks on research, and budget cuts, which have driven talent home and weakened our competitive institutions.

2/5 At a Beijing expo, a kiosk read my facial “micro-gestures” and found me 76.67% positive, with the rest divided between “fear” and “rage.” (Hard to argue.) Similar systems assign pupils risk levels; “Exposure Stations” post photos of those who sort their trash incorrectly.

3/5 The industrial achievement is real. China makes 70% of the world’s drones, E.V.s, lithium-ion batteries, and solar cells; deploys more industrial robots than the rest of the world combined; and has shipbuilding capacity 200 times America’s.

Indeed. Our podcast this week is on precisely the power of this message. In Hungary, the anti-corruption message hit Orban hard.

Absolutely. "These people are stealing your tax money, robbing you of services you paid for to enrich themselves. I will stop that." That's a pretty simple and effective message.

Trump: "I'm the only president that ever took a cognitive test. I took it 3 times. It's actually a very hard test for a lot of people. It wasn't hard for me. It starts off with an easy question and by the time you get to the middle it gets tougher -- mathematical equations and things."

Maybe a good moment to listen to this podcast on the historical pattern in which a frantic autocrat--advised by only cowering, compromised toadies--waddles into a flood of self-destructive choices. Mussolini invaded Ethiopia, then allied with Hitler, and so on www.newyorker.com/podcast/poli...

This cannot be something a civilian law enforcement agent is allowed to wear in the US — and an agency that has a culture that tolerates this cannot be saved.
