Every year, I conduct a "power pose" experiment in-class and the effects are absolutely humongous! I'm already looking forward to the lecture on experimental design, where we get to debunk our own study and talk about demand characteristics! #stats #EduSky

What do we expect of robustness reproductions in the age of AI? Help us find out at the Münster Reprohack workshop from December 2-4. We will conduct AI-led and human-led robustness reproductions, that are subsequently submitted to @r2journal.bsky.social Apply at indico.uni-muenster.de/e/reprohack

I've always thought my name was easy to spell/pronounce but suddenly in the UK people keep misspelling it, sometimes several times in one e-mail chain, and I'm a bit bemused by it ... Cheers, Angelika. Hi Anjelika,... ... Thanks, Angelika. Hi Angelina,... ... Best, Angelika. Hi Angelica,...

I've worked with international colleagues before and I've literally never had issues. Is this a cultural thing? Is this not considered a faux-pas? Is it just work pressure? I don't want to complain, just never know if I should find it amusing or insulting (and how to respond?)

I've seen people adding a SoundCloud link to help others pronounce their name. I personally don't care about the right pronunciation of my name, but I care about the spelling. Should I add: My name has a G and a K, and I like it that way, thanks?

Top-notch German rage bait 😂

Plastik! Warum nicht Papier? Warum nicht frisch? Warum kein Roggen?

Big (and sad) news indeed... I've been using the OSF since I was in undergrad and can't even picture what research life will be without OSF projects.

Brian Nosek@briannosek.bsky.social

Over the next several months, we will phase out some popular OSF features. These changes do not affect current public content, which remains safe and accessible. We have prepared support material to help users adapt. I am very sorry for the disruption to your work. Please read this post for details.

Journal: Please submit registered reports! Yay, #openscience! Also journal: We just accepted your Stage 2 RR, but could you please shove these pesky design analyses from Stage 1 into an appendix? Your manuscript is really too long 🤡 Am I the only one who finds this weird?

The true strength of this project comes from our close collaboration with West Yorkshire Police and Chief Inspector Alan Rhees-Cooper who doesn't only have 20 years of experience in the Missing Person sphere, but is also secretly a philosopher of science by training.

Like any methodologist, I love a good paradox, so you may be interested to hear that this whole project came into being because the police correctly recognized that a prevention paradox had biased existing risk assessment methods. This will be our best effort to overcome this bias 🤞🏼

But we won't just stop at calculating probabilities: Thanks to my colleague Chloe Brennan (not on Bluesky), we'll also be investigating how police and parents evaluate risks in missing children incidents. What risks should be classified as high or low? Would they trust data-driven risk assessments?

We'll be developing a Bayesian risk assessment model that helps police officers make better, evidence-based decisions in missing children incidents. What is Bayesian about it? We'll assign data-driven probabilities to investigative hypotheses (e.g., a child is with friends / an exploiter)

Absolutely thrilled to be invited to speak at KCL's Open Research Summer School again! 😎 Join my session on 20th July if you want to hear me talk about why p-hacking is bad and if we can possibly detect it. I'll be looking forward to meeting all the other fantastic speakers and participants! 🤩

I'm now also looking for a postdoc with strong Bayesian background and interest in developing Bayesian cross-validation theory, methods and software. Apply by email with no specific deadline (see contact information at users.aalto.fi/~ave/). Others, please share

I'm looking for a doctoral student with Bayesian background to work on Bayesian workflow and cross-validation (see my publication list users.aalto.fi/~ave/publica... for my recent work) at Aalto University. Apply through the ELLIS PhD program (dl October 31) ellis.eu/news/ellis-p...

Hive mind, I need your help! What are good resources to give to a PhD student to catch up on basic calculus in their own time? For example: logarithms, finding the integral/derivative of a function, basic matrix algebra... High-school level is fine, no need for proofs! #AcademicSky #StatsSky

Happy to see our paper on p-hacking discussed in @nulliusinverba.bsky.social !

New Nullius In Verba episode on p-hacking (Part 1 of 2). We discuss why it is useful for a single term to describe all practices that untransparently inflate error rates, and what these practices are. nulliusinverba.podbean.com/e/p-hacking-i/

PSA future employers of my students: Asking me in your reference form whether my student is "loyal and discreet" (not applying for the MoD here) and "prone to continual days off sick" is not a good look! 🤯🤯I AM SO MAD RIGHT NOW! 🤯🤯

Looking forward to presenting at the King's Open Research Summer School and meeting the London Open Science crowd! Thanks @samwestwood.bsky.social for the invitation!

Excited to welcome @ephemeralidea.bsky.social to King’s Open Research Summer School on Mon 21st July. She’ll be sharing new reflections since Big Little Lies, a standout in the growing movement to detect and challenge questionable research practices misconduct. 🔗 Register: tinyurl.com/j7y9962r

Also, to everyone who met me there last year: I've learned my lesson about UK geography and trains and will hopefully avoid another public transportation disaster, which means that you'll get the chance to hear me talk about p-hacking without sounding like I just attempted the London marathon!

If you'll be at APS2025 in DC next week, I'll be talking about the terrible statistical properties of the p curve procedure in the "Current Issues in Meta-Science" session Saturday, May 24th at 3pm. This will likely be my last US conference in a very long time. A brief summary follows. 1/

Travelling to the UK from Munich Airport, always a joy... After accidentally (!) stamping my partner's passport on a previous trip, today they didn't want to believe me that eVisas exist in the UK. But, thankfully, they believed the random guy next to me who shouted "DOCH" in good German fashion 😒
