A new project output with this paper led by @javiersanmillan.bsky.social on how the size, spatial distribution and level of residualisation of the social housing sector mediates the relationship between economic inequality and economic segregation in Dutch cities.

Javi San Millán@javiersanmillan.bsky.social

Why does economic inequality not necessarily result in residential segregation between the rich and the poor? 🏠 We suspected social housing played a role in the Netherlands and started researching it some years ago. And today we just published our results in @housingjournal.bsky.social!

A new study published in Science concludes that ”it appears most likely that environmental factors indexed by neighborhood socioeconomic status, including sleep and stress, strongly shape childhood brain organization.” #inequality #segregation

Scott Marek@smarek0502.bsky.social

What matters most for childhood brain organization? We analyzed 649 variables. The answer: Socioeconomics (SES); with brain patterns pointing at sleep & stress as drivers. Even brain-IQ associations were better explained by SES. In Science today: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

The idea is to: - discuss the diversity of theories / approaches to urban segregation, - create a community working on comparative analysis, theory and methodology developments, - create a new R package to assist with the selection, computation, visualisation and analysis of segregation measures

Our ABM study on the effects of spatial segregation on health inequalities is out. We find that daytime segregation reinforces the unequal distribution of outcomes between the most and least privileged groups (compared to the absence of segregation, but also with residential segregation alone).

doi.orgAn agent-based model to investigate the effects of urban segregation around the clock on inequalities in health behaviour - EPJ Data ScienceSocial segregation in cities refers to the uneven spatial distribution of individuals from unequal social groups, such as affluent and economically vulnerable people. Social segregation may, in turn, ...

She asks: Does economic segregation vary with economic inequality.? Which causal pathways and mechanisms are proposed to explain their connection? To what extent does existing research belong to distinct literatures? How does that affect the comparability of results and compatibility of mechanisms?

3/ financial wealth is more unequally distributed than real estate wealth across society, but less segregated over space; 4/ income segregation is mostly decreasing whereas wealth segregation is mostly increasing in NL
