I think the reason most “free speech defenders” think comedy sucks now Is that right wing standup comedy genuinely does suck. It’s SO BAD omg

“You only like comedians you agree with” NOPE. Not even close. In fact, a lot of my favourite comedians regularly attack me right in the trauma. I enjoy a lot of comedy by shitty people Unlike fragile free speech chuckleheads, I truly do believe no topic is out of bounds

I also believe the “don’t punch down, punch up” aphorism is too facile and safe. I prefer “disturb the comfortable, comfort the disturbed” And I’m even okay when a comedians take a risk and miss. That’s how you dig for gold

I’m kind of obsessed with standup, and follow a ton of highly diverse comedians and styles. It’s truly a golden age These right leaning “woe is me” edgelords are all the damn same. Boring. Predictable. Skill issue. YAWNNNNNNNNN

I’m attending Essen Spiel as a civilian for the first time after 20+ years of exhibiting And how hermetic is my silly little bubble? I completely forgot that you need to pay to go to cons 💀 Had to lean on a publisher friend for an exhibitor badge.

Finally watched The Odyssey Meh A good reminder of why Nolan movies just aren’t for me Stagey. Stiff. Melodramatic brutality that just feels immature and ultimately boring And it took 3 frickin hours to deliver the “message.” Blarg. The online culture war hate, though? Total stupid BS

If you’re looking to change somebody’s mind About anything It’s your responsibility to meet them where they’re at Shrill, scoldy superiority ain’t gonna cut it

There’s degrees to this, obviously And the best opportunities come from moving fence-sitters or the otherwise unengaged to your position Again, though - unless you’re an expert interlocutor, it’s burdensome and not scalable. Do the work, and take many breaks

Ugh, the cringe “kidult” is resurfacing from the 90s in the corporate world. Just … ugh. Have a fucking original thought for once, please

PSA for public facing entertainers in all mediums If you truly want to separate topical politics from your art Say nothing. Shhhhhh Making some grandiose statement about how you’re above politics in your art IS a conservative-coded political statement Public relations 101. My bill is in the mail

Free speech means I can repeat all the racist, sexist and homophobic slurs from last century that I want - and YOU are the oppressor for giving any pushback It’s pretty simple once you get the rules!

“I play games to relax” “I play games to be challenged” “I play games to socialise” “I play games to flex” “I play games to study” “I play games to test boundaries” ALL VALID

I often interview kids about games they are playing, and hilariously the parents usually bud in and answer "correctly" Even after I repeatedly remind them I'm looking for impressions and perspective, not the correct answer. Folks just can't help themselves 😂

Idle political musing: UBI ultimately wont affect jobs much at all, rather unlock the true humanist reward - usefulness, connectedness and purpose A scant few will never work and … good for them! Feels like yet another level up in civilisation if you ask me—decoupling morality and productivity

Connie is a stone cold rock star and as someone who playtested this at Hasbro I can say it’s cute as buttons. LIL TURLSSS 🐢🐢🐢

So excited!! Check out how *gorgeous* this game is. I promise the gameplay lives up to it, too.

I know it’s a rough time to be asking for money, and ignore this if you don’t have the means But the folks at Nibcard are doing amazing things for gaming against impossible odds.

Random career tidbits: I have two out-of-print published games (won't say which) that went from initial concept meeting to "files to the printer" in less than a week. Quarriors was turned down by 5 publishers before Wizkids took it. I've still designed more TCG content than any other type of game

For the Game of Thrones TCG (the original design the LCG is based on), I was designer, developer, producer, art director, web content creator and half of the organized play leadership. The AGOT TCG went from initial meeting to "files to printer" in 4.5 months. Utterly insane. Still proud of it.

We only hired a full time developer for AGOT TCG after a year in print. Also insane, but we didn't know any better. I wrote a weekly design column for both AGOT TCG and Call of Cthulhu TCG for about 3 years before burning out. Still have fond memories of those days. The communities were so tight!

I do not enjoy learning new games, and despise reading rulebooks to learn new games. This gets worse every year, and honestly I think this makes me a stronger designer. I'm on record as saying most game design "best practices" today are BS. The discipline is too young.

I consider myself an okay-to-decent party game designer, but an excellent party game developer. I did "inventor relations" for 3 publishers, evaluating thousands of games over maybe 6 years combined. I have so much respect for those who can excel at this role without losing their soul (I cannot)

My most innovative designs have never been published. Junior game designers often massively overvalue innovation. I was no exception. I have designed at least seven "entire new genre" type of games. I think maybe two of them are any good.

I still get starstruck over certain old school designers like Wolfgang Kramer. I remember meeting him and his wife years ago; they had no idea who I was and thought they were getting ambushed by a fan. They weren't wrong :) I love collaborating, and also recognize I'm difficult to work with

Most of my best known games, I designed the first draft in less than 24 hours. My superpower is that I'm very bursty, but need lots of downtime for meditation and reflection I never transcribe rules for my games, no matter how complicated, until we're in late development.

German is my mother tongue, though I don't speak it often anymore. But when I go to Essen each year in October, it's a helluva codeswitch - by the end of a week or more, I struggle with English a little. It's wild. The best design teams I've ever worked with were primarily women. Almost no drama!

I interviewed with Wizards of the Coast three separate times and got the job, but was unable to obtain the visa to work on site. My first professional encounter with the legendary Reiner Knizia was to reject one of his games for FFG. His reaction solidified my eternal respect for the man.

I don't read comments, though there is a persistent annoying rumour that CMON just pasted my name on a bunch of games when I worked there. In fact, I did a lot more uncredited design work than credited. My proudest games take me years to finish, but total heads down time, maybe a couple months

I have hundreds of design credits on BGG, and I think maybe a quarter of them are expansions I did not design, for games I designed. XCOM the board game only has my name on the cover, but it should also have Nikki Valens and Lukas Litzinger, who were more co-designers than developers.

Almost every game of mine from FFG is much more complicated than my original design spec I was lead designer on a Michael Jackson MMORPG (you heard that right), which never shipped, thank god. (The game concept was actually pretty rad, though) I still have far more unpublished games than published

Blood Rage was going to be a completely different game in completely different IP, until I met Adrian Smith. I once designed a game for my wife. She wrote the rules, and they were published unedited. I have great love for 99.99% of my peers, though there are some big designers I despise personally

The industry has always been pretty toxic and unprofessional. Back in the day, we designers kept passion alive though camaraderie with my teams I once wrote an email to a CEO saying only "fuck off." Nothing else. I still have crushing guilt over older designs I feel like I didn't respect enough

I have at least twenty uncredited developer roles on some pretty big games. My best selling game of all time doesn't have my name on it. A publisher once printed my formatted word doc rules in a final game I once did a convention panel so sleep deprived I blacked out and have no memory of it

Hey parents Pay close attention to the media your kids are watching. Especially now. Every social media algorithm gravitates toward right wing culture and agitprop left unmanaged. Think your boys aren't seeing pro or charitably-neutral manosphere content? Think again

Game industry dudes. Hi If you’ve never heard from any woman about abuse she’s experienced, it’s not because it ain’t happening It’s because you’re buddies with one or more abusers, and from a survivors POV you’re one of the 57 Cornell group chatters

I get a fair bit of harassment on social media, but it's nothing compared to the women (particularly public facing content creators) with much smaller followings. It's wild how much more intense, persistent and dangerous their harassment gets.

People with pictures of white Fabío Jesus on their walls getting violently upset that a fictional ranger is darker than the John Howe paintings they saw as a kid Can’t just be normal 🙄

I grew up with LOTR. I know Middle Earth embarrassingly well, and can quote too much of the books If someone came out with like Asian-coded Gimli son of Gloìn, I guess I’d be like “weird but okay” and then drop it Unless the mini looked cool. Then all bets are off 🤘🏾 Because FANTASY
