Hey, fellow Texans. Dan Patrick said this: “I'm not going to legalize marijuana in Texas. And if people want to vote me out of office for that, so be it." Just a friendly reminder you have a chance to take him up on that. Early voting is open now!

So, Wildwood is terrific. A lot of old folks like me wish for the dark, quasi-traumatic family film of our youths. We don’t get them very often, but Wildwood fits the bill. High fantasy, real stakes, complicated characters, incredible animation. Long live Laika.

New episode of The Spiel is out! @maxevry.bsky.social has a new book coming out called Stranded On Earth that focuses on how the unmade project Night Skies evolved into Gremlins and E.T. We talk about that and dive into the early Spielberg years where his ultimate legacy was shaped.

I don’t really give a shit about the embargo debate around Clayface, but I will say that dude is high as a kite if he thinks that movie is even remotely comparable to Morbius. I had a blast with it and can’t believe it’s as unabashedly gnarly as it is.

To me, Clayface is the kind of tonal zigzag I was hoping for whenever Gunn took over and said the DCU was going to contain multitudes of flavors. It’s wild that a sexy gory morally grey goopy villain origin story coexists with Superman and Lanterns. That’s a plus, not a minus.

What better way to kick off Halloween season than a chat with two living horror legends? Brez and Vespe welcome Night of the Living Dead's Judith O'Dea and Russ Streiner and talk about the legacy of that film, Romero, and their favorite @stephenking.bsky.social stories.

Anecdotal, but I’ve early voted in every Texas election since the 2000 presidential election and I’ve never seen lines like I’m seeing today. And these are mid terms!

Also not scientific, but judging some books by their covers I’d guess the crowd is wildly weighted in favor of faces I’d guess lean democrat. Lots of young folks, people of color, nerdy clothes, etc.

To celebrate the release of @brianduffield.bsky.social’s Whalefall, I recorded a very entertaining episode of The Spiel where we nerd out about Minority Report! Listen to the podcast and then go see Austin Abrams navigate a surprising amount of whale sphincters at a theater near you!

I posted what I thought was a fairly harmless take on the critical pile on I’ve seen for Digger at “the other place” and let me tell you, boys and girls, the discourse is a-ragin’.

Just saw Alpha Gang at Fantastic Fest. First off, this gonzo movie is a perfect fit for this weirdo fest. Crazy cast playing ‘50s greaser aliens in some kind of post-fall apocalyptic landscape. Bautista, Chris Pine, Cate Blanchett. Odd, enthralling, unlike anything out there.

Resident Evil rules. Fun is at the forefront in a true survival horror story carried by a great everyman performance from Austin Abrams. Cool monsters, tons of gore, and all wrapped up in enough humor to keep it from being a bummer.

Apologies to my movie nerd friends, but I have to brag about the single best Magic the Gathering pack I’ve ever opened and needed to share. Got a Strixhaven collector booster on sale and opened a Vampiric Tutor and a Silver Scroll Cyclonic Rift back to back.

For those lucky folks who haven’t fallen into the MtG money pit, those are two very powerful cards in highly sought after (and rare) treatments. Over $400 in value. To get them in a single pack is insane luck.

One thing I haven’t seen any of these so called HHN influencers discuss is how they brought back the absolutely delicious discontinued ‘80s snack Peanut Butter Boppers at the Stranger Things food booth. Real (old) fatties remember.

Currently hiding from the rain in the Jaws quick service restaurant, soothed by John Williams’s score and Percy Rodriguez’s dulcet trailer narration. Not a bad day for a genre geek.

What a bizarre thing to rip off. If you’re going to steal my post at least try to change a word or two. This Ayesha person can suck my dick from the back.

Attn: @ericvespe.bsky.social - came across this on Gizmodo a few minutes ago and I thought you should be aware:

It’s hard to express how much of a cornerstone Tim Curry was for my generation. Beyond his ability to entertain/frighten/provoke a laugh, his energy was infectious. His Mount Rushmore of iconic characters stands shoulder to shoulder with the greatest actors of all time.

What I particularly love about Tim Curry is that no matter what the performance demanded of him, stage, screen, or video game, he always put in 110%. I’m not sure that dude had an insecure bone in his body.

Do you remember when Adam Wingard’s Twitter was a daily barrage of vintage erotica and violent pulp covers before he razed all that to the ground when he got the Godzilla gig? Well, that guy is who showed up to direct Onslaught.

Onslaught is like a modern day Cannon remake of Assault on Precinct 13. Early Carpenter meanness, ‘80s Golan-Globus weirdness, and a strong desire to get to the good stuff a quickly as possible. Very entertaining throwback.

This movie’s sweet and should scratch that liminal horror itch for those that really love that particular subgenre.

IT ENDS in theaters in LA and NY this Friday, August 21st! (furry vore art unrelated other than this post being the top search result for It Ends on Bluesky)

Film bro discourse last week: Inde Navarrette can do anything! She’s a superstar, the next big thing. Film bro discourse this week: But can she do a southern accent, tho?

Saw Spider-Man Brand New Day tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Felt like a throwback to the kind of effortlessly charming and entertaining movie that defined the golden era of the MCU. Excited to check it out again this weekend.

The Odyssey being a massive phenomenon in the face of alt-Right bigotry AND the Tate Brothers getting arrested in the same weekend? Kinda feels like the tide’s changing, eh?

Beautifully said and seconded. BJ is a true fighter, a hell of a writer, and a personal favorite podcast guest. Any help you can throw her way will result in triple good karma coming back at you.

Freelance life is a struggle. Making a living doing any of (waves arms around) THIS is insane. Doing it while constantly dealing with the surprising side effects of surviving cancer? Takes a stronger person than me. That’s who BJ Colangelo is. But she needs help. Can you help? gofund.me/120701466

Does this newly announced Magic art look like one of those collectible plates that your grandmother would buy you for Christmas in the early ‘90s? Yes. Am I excited about being able to finally afford a Sheoldred the Apocalypse for my deathtouch deck? Also yes.

This was harder than you’d think. Where does your favorite Dante flick end up in our Top 7? Just gonna have to listen and find out!

Shout out to the family that brought their 6 & 4 year olds to the promo screening of a very loud, 2.5 hour mythological drama. The kids reacted the way you’d think: Laughing at the wrong places, screaming randomly, singing little songs. Just as Christopher Nolan intended.

(I know their ages because I got to hear the parents say it while arguing with the theater staff that since this was technically a private screening that the usual theater rules about no children under 6 allowed at R rated movies after 6pm didn’t apply to them)

Just heard that Sam Neill passed away. Whether playing the devil incarnate or a nerdy fossil hunter he always brought real humanity to his characters. I have a particular fondness for his genre work and will miss his presence onscreen.
