I am in the 1%, but it's good to know that this is not abnormal. On the positive side, I feel very happy on the days when the pain is less severe - so little is needed to be happy.

Pinya and I were talking to AI, trying to understand whether evil in this world has any boundaries. Should we trust it? I predict that these answers will change, as more people start asking.

One interesting addition in NYC this July is Roulette's "No Fun" Festival. It feels like most names with "new," "contemporary," "experimental" and "weird" are already taken and they want to make sure that people who like easy (fun?) music don't show up. extendedtechniques.com/2026/07/01/n...

What an amazing edipode! So great to hear about the collaboration of two inspiring scholars of theatre and history. (Also, I'm looking forward to reading "The Perfect Tuba" book.)

What fun to talk with @charlesomalley.bsky.social and @scottwstern.bsky.social about how they navigated sharing a writing project and a life, and the fabulous book, SHAKESPEARE'S MARGARET (@wwnorton.com) that resulted. Listen to our conversation here: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/c...

Laurie Anderson - the artist of saying exactly the words we need to hear today - speaking about the relationship between love and power. The deepest, most meaningful, and most effective showmanship I've seen. (Fair enough, I'm not a denizen of shows.) Priceless and free of charge. @Central Park

Tomorrow I will be presenting the final lecture of the course.

Meet your lecturers! Online course Muzyka is led by an exceptional line-up of scholars and musicians shaping how we understand Ukrainian music today. Eight weeks. Eight perspectives. One rich culture. eventbrite.co.uk/e/muzyka-2026-discover-ukraine-through-music-full-course-tickets-1987145689249

On this platform, I've been trying to follow only colleagues in music and arts criticism and academics working in disciplines related to my work. Yet all I see in my thread are complaints about politics! (And occasionally, some personal news.) Is there a time of the day to read something meaningful?

I spent an entire concert in earplugs for the first time in my life, but the performance was still mesmerizing. From a trance-like drumbeat, to gradually changing timbres and reverberations, to the guitarists' excitement, to Reg Bloor's energetic conducting, final dance, and theatrical collapse.

One of those times when I thought I was just passing by, and then couldn't resist writing!

It often feels that we are setting a record of the largest amount of interesting new music events per day, and this month it's actually true. Good luck choosing on June 5th, 6th, 20th and especially the 13th! (We try to be selective, sometimes it's just too hard.)

Please donate for sky defence in Ukraine, if you can! The neighbourhood where I lived for 2 years is completely destroyed, including a subways station, shopping mall, drama theatre, many civilian houses.

Last night Russia attacked seventy-seven places in Ukraine with more than six hundred drones and missiles. You can help protect Ukrainian life by donating here. u24.gov.ua/news/timothy...

Very excited to give a lecture for this course about Ukrainian music! Register for the course or selected days. Mine is on June 23.

Paul Pinto’s Octet is unlike anything you’ve heard before, unless you’ve heard Julia Wolfe’s Forbidden Love, or Roman Grygoriv and Illia Razumeiko’s Mariupol. Still, the shower of flying pencils was a new experience for me. Imagine what he will do in his opera? (Livestream in comments.)

So many important points about our current condition and the power of slow listening!

**NEW POST** I'm starting a slow listening club on my Substack. It's an invitation to come offline & listen instead. To explain why, this is why classical music is so important to me, and why I think slow, deep, engaged listening is such a powerful thing. leahbroad.substack.com/p/im-startin...

This is my hometown. Just a few months ago, around the corner from this UNESCO "protected" heritage site, I had coffee with my best friend and spent four hours discussing how to be kind and loving, and write more meaningful music, poetry, and prose in this collapsing world.

I have walked this street many times. As have millions of Russian tourists. But the times when shock still had value have probably passed a long time ago. Oh beautiful Lviv. My heart breaks for you.

Yesterday I wrote 5 program notes, ~150 words each, a long journal entry about my book chapter (why it is important and what should be in it), and a 2-page poem about migraine. Can I consider it a productive writing day? Nothing typed in a document towards book progress...
