If someone is telling you some game failed because "woke" don't listen to them. They're chronically online, they live in a bubble. Their opinions don't reflect reality. People who don't spend all their time online think or talk like this.

🎮🧵 Dead Space (2023) #gameoween I haven't played a scary scary game in a minute so this one had me totally on edge most of the way through. I think I only played the original once but playing this one feels similar to the memory of my past experience. Total match in the vibes department.

Exploration was a chore at times. Going back to retrieve previously inaccessible items felt like distractions when they didn’t tie into any of the missions/goals. Perhaps I should've played on a higher difficulty because it just.. not that hard? I mostly died to my own stupidity.

With big scares, shady plots & dark uncertainties around every corner Dead Space Remake a creepy atmosphere, dire stakes and all the bloody engineering tools one could possibly hope for. Shame we won’t be getting a sequel, I think they could have vastly improved a number of this game’s flaws. 7/10.

The sound design is great. As the ship affects Isaac more you hear impossible thoughts & whispers. It strains you, makes you listen more intently to hear them. Easier to get in your head, player. Isaac’s heart pounding out of his chest during fights is effective to create panic subconscious panic.

I will admit I think enemy variety stagnated a bit by the final 1/3. When you’re constantly fighting in tight, oppressive corridors for 10 or 12 hours & seeing the same 13-15 enemies it doesn’t feel as rewarding as it once did.

The game is a more oppressive experience than the typical survival horror. Danger comes from a seemingly never-ending onslaught of enemies. You quickly get the sense early on you’ll be fighting for your life from minute to minute until it's all over.

It’s very good at giving the player what they need. The item RNG seems to favor your immediate needs. This also incentivizes carrying fewer weapons to maximize ammo tools you actually use. The Zero Gravity gameplay from DS2 is also well appreciated.

The franchise lore is deep and fascinating with themes of the struggles between science & faith, human curiosity & cynicism as well as political corporatism & the dangers of religious indoctrination & evangelical overreach. Unitology calls itself religion but moves like a death cult.

It strikes me ass odd that there's a contigent of players out there who say Belmont's Curse isn't a Castlevania game when in reality Castlevania has been a number of things over the years. The OG isn't like Symphony, 64 or Lament of Innocence. Almost none of those are like Lords of Shadow

This conversation comes up every time they do a new Prince of Persia too. Many people can't let go of the Sands of Time (despite the series having an identity before those games) and the Excellent 2008, Lost Crown & Rogue entries proceeding them.

Punk Rock Holocaust. A super shlocky low-budget slasher Z-Movie filmed on the 2003 Warped Tour. A journalist on the tour investigates when bodies piling up at every venue & features a number of fairly big punk bands of the time all filmed on a shoestring budget in miniDV. First of a trilogy

I should amend this: I just found out about the 3rd's existence, as it was meant to release this year. See? Even shitty punk rock films get legacy sequels 🤣. Though with director Doug Sakmann's death there seems to be no word of an official release for the third film.

This is your reminder that it's perfectly okay to like all three of these games. What doesn't pass the vibe check is denigrating bullshit like this. And the response is correct 😂. It reeks of desperation when you have as much skin in the game as a CMO

Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed is a rather worthy sequel to a film I hold dear in my heart. This time it takes place in a grimy rehabilitation facility & continues many of the themes from the first. It's also the first time I ever saw Tatiana Maslany in anything. She's been legit since day one.

Ginger Snaps is my favorite Werewolf film. Saw it like 23 years ago randomly on like HBO and I was just enamored. It's a dry comedy at times and other it's a bloody metaphor for menstruation & transformations. I had such a huge crush on Katharine Isabelle. She & Emily Perkins are an iconic duo

While I'm at it, 2LDK (2003). Let me just tell you you are not ready for whatever this film is. It's violent, over the top and weirdly slapstick. It's a brief little timestamp of crazy ass Japanese films of the aughts, including bizarre editing & directorial choices steeped heavily in the era.

I haven't talked about any movies this October, which is uncharacteristic. So here! Go watch Raw (Grave in French). Had the pleasure of seeing this in theaters at release. It's wildly, well, Raw. An animalistic look at coming of age & awakenings. It's messy, gross & in your face. Highly recommended

🎮🧵Out of Sight. I was immediately struck by two things: 1. This is so incredibly like Little Nightmares. Though it seems more interested in telling a story than challenging the player. 2. This game is going to play around with perspective and point of view a LOT. And it does to quite fun effect!

While the atmosphere is creepy and the vibes are appropriate, I don't often get a real sense of danger or urgency in the gameplay. Every confrontation feels scripted so it rarely felt like outwitting the stalkers and there's nothing oppressively complex about the puzzles.

The music is sort of generically atmospheric. It serves its purpose, but I find nothing about it particularly distinctive. Overall I am glad I played it, but I don’t find myself overly moved by the experience. 6/10. #gameoween

One has to avoid mouse traps, bells & kettles on strings like it’s the most fucked up high stakes games of hide & seek I can think of. There’s also a mysterious presence. It permeates the house in a number ways, often manifesting as spirits with mysterious intent.

The story is harrowing, being put in an unthinkable position as the most innocent & vulnerable among us. It feels like a cautionary tale about the ways grief unleashes something inhuman within us & the hell we make others experience while we grieve.

If you're riffing on that sort of game, this is certainly a unique & innovative way to do it. Our main character, Sophie, has her eyes taken & can only see through the eyes of her teddy bear. To do anything she puts Teddy down which allows her to interact & fixes our perspective of the environment.

It's heavy on environmental storytelling. There's tons of evidence Sophie is another in a long line of victims of this house. There's bits of candy & kid's stuff in some very sketchy places interspersed with cages and shackles. Even the collectibles seem to be the toys of previous children.

One of the wonderful things about seeing Gears of War back in the conversation is people are (re)discovering Gears' own special brand of bullshit. Seemingly baffling mechanics and gunfights that sometimes don't make sense. Welcome to the trip

🎮🧵 Gears of War: E-Day. First off, wow! What an absolute blast from the past. The Coalition shows immediate reverence for the established lore with references to major & minor book characters & the parts they play. The continuity feels very intact. Love that Gettner & Michaelson are featured.

This game is a real treat for longtime Gears fans & newcomers. It gives me faith in the future of the franchise. I think it’s up there with 2, my personal favorite and one of the best in the series. There’s news of poor sales. If so, Xbox really painted themselves into a corner with Gamepass. 8/10.

Through Mags we get to see some of the faults & realities of the COG from a time where survival against monstrous, impossible odds wasn't the only priority. We get to see how the big war machine can fail individuals in a society and how that would naturally leave anyone feeling abandoned & jaded.

Reyes has his own unique pathos too, navigating a war that academy training could never prepare him for while lamenting his own dire past mistakes. While past characters have been more fun or charismatic, these 2 are more appropriate for the dire, hopeless & gritty tone that E-Day portrays.

While E-Day is great, it’s not perfect. Found some pretty glaring bugs in Horde Siege, One in particular which makes squadmates impossible to revive. It also posesses some of that old Gears bullshit that I suppose has become part of its identity.

I know some have their knickers in a twist over the addition of Mags, but we’re not entertaining that bullshit here. I find her & Lucas to be great additions. They add a personal stake to the story as their city crumbles around them & their individual plots are strong & deliberate.

The environments touch on some subtle class disparities more elaborate in the books. Even in ruins from other games you can tell Ephyra & Jacinto are ornate, affluent cities with old families and old money. Kalona feels indelibly blue collar & of the people. Steel & mortar vs. gilded aesthetics.

Supply boxes are a godsend. It’s nice to be able to prepare a loadout, not merely scrounge what they can in their immediate vicinity. The weapon mods also add a much appreciated layer of customization & utility.

This game is fucking gorgeous and it runs like a dream. It has some serious atmosphere as well, with notes of horror that surpass anything seen in previous games. The first act almost plays out like the events of a Resident Evil game. Every new creature feels like a new threat.

Movement has been greatly improved. I think they took to heart criticisms of navigation being tied to one button in the past. The climbing mechanics add a brand new sense of verticality that is immensely welcome & adds layers to the combat. The changes help successfully modernize Gears.
