Do you work with production data? We have some updates for you. My students and I developed a tool that was accepted for publication in Behavior Research Methods. The tool is called: TAPA (Toolkit for Acoustic-Phonetic Analysis). Yes, the name is influenced by the tapas tradition. #speechscience

“no review panels are scheduled, although about 600 proposals are still pending with SBE” So 600 teams of scientists got preliminary data, did analyses, wrote up proposals, got budgets approved, etc, based on NSF saying there were funds in this area. And now their work is just sitting there

Science Magazine@science.org

Exclusive: In March, the White House’s budget request for fiscal year 2027 called for eliminating NSF’s Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences. Whether Congress will approve the request is unclear, but NSF is not waiting. Learn more: https://scim.ag/4hC7bes

Thousands of scientists and other citizens joined together to post comments on this proposal, and Congress took action. Now's the time for a similar effort to block the major changes proposed in peer review at NIH 🧪 grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

The House has now passed (370–48) the Senate's version of the continuing resolution, so the government will remain funded until Dec. 11 and the OMB rule will remain on ice until then as well.

I'm extremely excited that @brianwwl.bsky.social has started his postdoctoral researcher position in my lab. Dr. Wong will bring his expertise to our behavioral and EEG experiments. After some challenging two years (and feeling like the squirrel below), I'm grateful for my community.

FYI: our paper features the analysis of a political debate 💜

Two big reminders: TAPA is a tool. No one leaves a tapas table and lets the kitchen decide. Same for TAPA, a trained phonetician is always needed. Moreover, tools are not replacement for funding for researchers. We need funding and we need it urgently!

Similar to the tapas culture, we created small bites for this big problem. The toolkit does #diarization, #transcription, forced alignment, and it moves onto the next step of #vowel formant, #VOT, and #fricative spectral moment extractions.

Seeing group of men (philosophers, engineers, cognitive scientists) finding each other in their shared hate of women experts who work and think outside the(ir) mainstream. Patting each other on the back for mysogynist dunks & mischaracterisations, while thinking they are smart and doing noble work.

Police murdered a Black man in the street in Madison WI today. Shot point blank in the head while on the ground, tased, and surrounded by four cops. It looks like an execution. Multiple videos circulating online. Things are about to get very bad here.

We then discuss how listeners can adapt to these differences and the cognitive and social factors that can impact this adaptation. The possibility of change motivates interventions in institutions supporting science and the broader community. 4/4

So thrilled to see the fantastic duo @mattgoldrick.bsky.social and @m2b2.bsky.social doing this work, and representing @reviewerzero.bsky.social and the ROLE Collective while they do it. Friday 2-3:30pm in Gavea A if you are at #CogSci2026.

As everything started to go to heck in a hand basket, both in terms of support for science in the US, and support for scholarship as a whole at UNC, I realized that faculty advocacy, which i had ignored, was crucial. Joining the @aaup.org was a wise move--their leadership has been remarkable 1/2

I hope that you sit with this discomfort and engage in conversations with your institutions and raise your concerns about how AI does not conform with sustainability initiatives, academic integrity, and scientific transparency.

The past five days felt like fresh air. Intellectually stimulating conversation with a group of peers who come from very diverse backgrounds. I had the chance to reflect on my past few years as a scholar. Bottomline is that, the last five days, I was away from the hype and it was a gift.

As a small project, my colleagues and I looked into whether different institutions disclose how much money they spend on AI tools. As anticipated, there was no disclosure. This might sound familiar to you from various historical contexts.

I shared almost two years ago with my colleagues what I went through in my previous life. This was one of the examples. I am not Nostradamus or a fortune teller. Most of us experienced these in other contexts. I am happy to share my experiences but I don’t know where, how, and when.
