Despite years of intimidation and political pressure, #Serbia’s journalists have continued to inform the public. Their courage deserves recognition. Their safety and independence should not be left to individual resilience or solidarity networks. It's time to establish long-standing guarantees. 👇

@mediafreedomeu.bsky.social 👇
#Serbia: Journalists Mihailo Stojković and Jelena Stojković were injured while reporting at a polling station in Pavlovac. We firmly condemn the attack, which was published on Mapping Media Freedom and call for their perpetrators to be held accountable without delay. 🧵@mediafreedomeu.bsky.social
#Serbia: Several women journalists have also been arbitrarily denied the right to report from various polling stations. Reference to non-existent or unenforceable requirements for media accreditation must not be used as an excuse to arbitrarily restrict access to journalists. 👇🧵
#Serbia: The EFJ joins its Serbian affiliates in encouraging all journalists to report any attacks that hinder their coverage of the elections. All incidents will be shared by the @mediafreedomeu.bsky.social with relevant international actors to support timely action and accountability.
#Serbia: Any major attacks against journalists will be reported to the CoE platform and documented on Mapping Media Freedom. We will also share findings with the EC, the EEAS and EU Delegation, the European Parliament, OSCE/ODIHR and other relevant actors to support timely action and accountability.
#Serbia, Europe is watching. We call on the Serbian authorities to guarantee the safety of media workers and to ensure that the election is reported on transparently. We will monitor the situation and strongly condemn any attacks against journalists. 👇
#Serbia: As #MFRR partners, we are deeply concerned by reports that Nova.rs's current editorial team could lose access to the system it uses to publish and manage its journalism, at a highly sensitive pre-election moment. 🧵
#Serbia: In a letter to Dejan Kocić, CEO of United Cloud, we urge the company to clarify whether it received such instructions, to refrain from any change that would stop the newsroom from working, and to restore access if already removed. Read the full letter 👇
#Montenegro: The death threats were made while the journalists were covering the removal of an illegal monument to a Chetnik commander near Berane. The death threats were documented on Mapping Media Freedom 👇🧵
#Montenegro: This week, the Trade Union of Media of Montenegro (TUMM) strongly condemned the latest threats against Pejović, aimed at "breaking him" and his camera. Threats against journalists must be treated with the seriousness they deserve. 👇🧵
#NorthMacedonia: When thousands of fake accounts start following or reacting en masse to a media outlet's content, the platform's algorithms recognise this as suspicious activity. Similar bot attacks in Serbia resulted in media accounts being temporarily suspended. 🧵
#NorthMacedonia: The EFJ is joining its affiliate, the ZNM, in calling on the relevant authorities to investigate what appeared to be coordinated bot attacks and identify those responsible.
#Serbia: The EFJ strongly condemns the brutal takeover of Nova.rsn as a new wave of repression. The appointment of Marko Stjepanovic as editor-in-chief of Nova.rs has been imposed in a climate of terror: any journalist who opposes it is being told to leave the newsroom within 48 hours. 🧵
“My heart goes out to the journalists at Nova.rs. I salute the courage of Natasa Korlat and all the journalists at Nova who are fighting to safeguard the right of Serbian citizens to access free, independent and credible information,"stated EFJ Ricardo Gutierrez @molenews1.bsky.social. 🧵
#Turkey: Today, Halk TV was raided and placed under a trustee. Türkiye’s media crackdown keeps escalating. Newsrooms seized, journalists jailed, accounts blocked. With @ifjglobal.bsky.social and our Turkish affiliates, we call for an end to the trusteeship and the release of all jailed journalists.
The programme for Voices is out! The EFJ will be there – join us in Thessaloniki from 26-28 November. The tickets are free🥰
#France: since 29 September, thirteen incidents targeting journalists covering student protests have been recorded on the @mediafreedomeu.bsky.social platform. Eight of them were attacks by police officers, even against reporters clearly identified as press. 👇🧵
#France: These attacks cannot go unpunished. We urge the French authorities to act on our post-mission recommendations, starting with holding those responsible to account, law enforcement officers included. 👇
@mediafreedomeu.bsky.social @rsf.org 👇

"Recently, we passed 7,000 recorded violations of press freedom in Europe. Digital attacks are the most common. Almost in that same week, our own mappingmediafreedom.org was itself the target of a cyberattack..." - Elena Rodina, MFRR Coordinator at @ecpmf.bsky.social.

"MFRR has now recorded more than 7,000 press freedom violations. These are European figures, but the trend is global: freedom of expression worldwide has declined by 10%. Independent media need more than expressions of concern. They need direct support." - @polomaldonado.bsky.social.

Up next is Márton Gergely of HVG and @globalfreemedia.bsky.social: "In Hungary, we felt like scuba divers who had spent years deep underwater, grown used to the pressure. The April election pulled us back to the surface, but we came up so fast that we realised we still need a lot of time to adjust"

“We kept telling media to diversify revenue and sell merchandise. Now we realise we need advocacy and political change to fix the system, rethink funding. DW Akademie has a new advocacy unit, we’ve brought orgs together to speak with one voice on media viability.” - Lucie Gürtler, @akademie.dw.com.

Bojana Kostić, @gfmd.info: “We are building a Journalism Cloud Alliance with @occrp.org. It is a software service, which brings together investigative orgs, data newsrooms, and public interest initiatives that are struggling with the cost and constraints of commercial cloud computing."
During the MFRR summit, we expressed deep concerns over #Ireland's significant cut to the EU budget for 2028–2034 significantly affecting the AgoraEU funding: a detrimental impact on the viability and financial future of journalism despite it being a democratic infrastructure.
Kick off the @mediafreedomeu.bsky.social summit w/ EFJ Director @renateschroeder.bsky.social moderating the first panel of the day: "If we treat journalism as a public good, a critical infrastructure, security issue and watchdog for democracies, why does it not happen? Who is afraid of journalism?"

#Lithuania: The EFJ joins the EBU in urging the Prosecutor General's Office to keep its inquiry into LRT necessary and proportionate, and not to seek information that could expose sources or unpublished investigations. Editorial decisions belong in the newsroom.

#Turkey: EFJ, @ifjglobal.bsky.social and @tgs.org.tr call on X to stop blocking journalists' and media accounts without a court order. In September, 1,270 accounts were blocked in Turkey. Only 115 had a court decision. Blocking these accounts means blocking the public's right to know.
#Slovenia: We stand with our Slovenian affiliates SNS and DNS ahead of Sunday's referendum on abolishing the RTV contribution. Scrapping it without a guaranteed alternative puts RTV Slovenija's independence at risk and goes against EMFA. Vote PROTI (AGAINST) on 11 October.

Ahead of France’s 2027 presidential election, media freedom faces growing pressure. Our new report examines threats to journalists, media pluralism, public service media, source protection and the implementation of EMFA. Read the report in English and French below. www.mfrr.eu/france-missi...
@snjcgt.fr @snjournalistes.bsky.social @cfdtjournalistes.bsky.social @ofalp.org @rsf.org MFRR
