Wait. This is what the juveniles look like?? I see these guys all season long in NJ! πŸ¦‘πŸͺΌ

Happy #CtenophoreDay! These lab-grown comb jellies are giving off lava lamp vibes 😎 I often get entranced whenever I feed them 😍 #TeamBob #Bobettes #ctenophore #scicomm

Night dive with the locals in NJ We fought the current on the way out to have an easy ride back to the entrance/exit point. 73F, 60min dive πŸ€ΏπŸ™πŸ¦‘πŸ¦€

Some fantastic conditions last weekend diving offshore in NJ. Easily 40 ft visibility, 72F at the top, 52 at 120ft. The jellyfish deco gauntlet on the way back up felt like a level from Mario Bros-i could've done with one of the invincible stars πŸ™πŸ¦‘πŸ¦€πŸŸπŸ πŸ€Ώ

Photos from Sunday's shore dive. It was a toasty 78Β°F and a nice 65min dive before the tide started to really move again

A horseshoe crab from last night's shore dive in NJ. Ive never noticed how red the feets of a horseshoe crab can be! 72Β°F, 20+ft of viz, 55min dive πŸ™πŸ¦‘πŸŸπŸ πŸ€ΏπŸ¦€

It took social media by storm, but it didn’t work for all the reasons that ocean plastic pollution experts said it wouldn’t work all along. My latest for The Revelator tells this important story and asks what we can learn from it. Please enjoy. therevelator.org/why-ocean-cl...

therevelator.orgWhy The Ocean Cleanup Hasn’t Solved the Plastic Pollution Crisis β€’ The RevelatorGlobal problems are rarely solved by one person or invention. The Ocean Cleanup didn’t work, for the reasons experts said it wouldn’t. What can we learn from this?

Some fishy bait ball soup from the wreck of the Spar off Morehead City in NC last weekend πŸ¦‘πŸ™πŸŸπŸ πŸ€Ώ

Drove to NC over the weekend to get some warmup dives in as the season kicks off. This is from the wreck of the Aeolus in 110ft of water. On the breather, the fish just seem to ignore me! It's really incredible πŸ¦ˆπŸ€ΏπŸ¦‘

Saw this guy from the parking lot. He was upside down and I was afraid he was dead but i went to flip him anyway Picked him up and he moved! Even better, he has a tag! Horseshoe crabs might look dangerous but they're completely harmless with no way to hurt you even if they wanted to πŸ¦‘πŸ™πŸ¦€

Cave diving can be incredible but even the most experienced tech divers I know have a healthy respect for the skills it takes to do it and come home alive.

Louis Redux@louisredux.bsky.social

The way the divers and their behaviour is described is, I hope, inaccurate because otherwise this was a very cavalier/irresponsible set of behaviours. Diving into an unknown (or at least unknown to you) cave is highly dangerous. It's not something any diver should contemplate without training.

One of my favorite new to me fishes! I love their smokey black eyeliner and their stripey baby outfits

BBQ chicken leg from a huge smoker outside the St Pete Times rink before a Bolts game. Honorable mentions: full size NJD plastic helmet full of popcorn, smoked meat poutine at The Bell Centre

what is the best sports event snack u ever ate bonus if it was served in a little plastic helmet with the team logo but it is not a requirement

I don't know why but images from space like this always leave me in tears. It also doesn't fail to leave me utterly go smacked that this is being live streamed. #artemisII

I've only ever spotted one frogfish during a dive. I'm sure I've "seen" loads and thought they were just part of the reef. Love these weirdos!

c0nc0rdance@c0nc0rdance.bsky.social

I'm deep down the rabbit hole on FROGFISH, 60 species of anglerfish in family Antennariidae. They are deeply, utterly WEIRD & MARVELOUS. Most walk on modified fins. Others use jet propulsion. Some are capable of air-breathing. Some are "hairy", others blend perfectly in sargassum.

Aliens are here and they live in the ocean. It has been too long since my last blackwater dive!

Chris Gug@gugunderwater.bsky.social

The rarest of the rare! This holy-grail dream fish is a larval-stage #monkfish, aka #goosefish. Shot in the wild, using scuba, while diving at night over water several thousand feet deep, several miles offshore from Kumejima, Okinawa. #larvalfish #blackwater #gug #deepseafish

Gull just doing gull things at the ferry terminal this morning. Going on the reactions from the staff, he is a regular

Critters big and small from Bonaire. I have no idea what the bright ruddy orange guy is- I just thought he was cute πŸ¦‘πŸ™πŸŸπŸ€Ώ

If this is from the Spiegel Grove, I think I met this grouper back in Dec during CCR Mod certification πŸ¦‘πŸ€ΏπŸŸ

c0nc0rdance@c0nc0rdance.bsky.social

It's hard to grasp how large this grouper is until you see it in comparison to the ship's toilet on the left. This appears to be an Atlantic goliath grouper or 'itajara' (Epinephelus itajara). They can reach 800 lbs (350 kg) & 8 feet long (2.5 m) Let's talk about these gentle giants.

@greenleejw.bsky.social I got excited about your @ name but then read your description about being a surprised historian, not a surprised eel. Every time I see an eel, I hear them say "Surprise!" and for a moment thought I was no longer alone 😭

I don't know who needs to hear this: Walmart has giant plushie marine life that you can just buy. I left without the spotted eagle ray but I might need to go back for him this week. In the meantime, meet Sledge the hammerhead shark πŸ¦‘πŸ™πŸ¦ˆ

Some of the tiny creatures we saw in the Banda Sea- I love being able to pick a spot, stop, and see so much life around me. πŸ™πŸ¦‘πŸ€ΏπŸŸπŸͺΈ

It was so much fun to meet sea creatures like sea snakes/kraits who don't live in the Atlantic/Caribbean, different types of hard and soft corals that are thriving despite VERY warm water temps and to see familiar fish shapes in new flavors and color patterns. πŸ™πŸ¦‘πŸ€ΏπŸŸ

The clown triggerfish was such a standout, it quickly became a favorite fish to spot! It was also super shy for a triggerfish, preferring to run away instead of attack like the triggers we all know and love πŸ¦‘πŸ™πŸ€ΏπŸŸπŸͺΈ

The Banda Sea brought the goods on the very first dive! Flamboyant and reef cuttlefish and morays in new(to me) colors. Wow. πŸ¦‘πŸ™πŸ€Ώ

We have been spoiled with amazing offshore dives this year. Warm water even at depth with great visibility! πŸ¦‘πŸ€ΏπŸŸ

I adore these conger eels( or American eels? There's been debate!) They're so googly-eyed and the wreck we dove was full of them! πŸŸπŸ€ΏπŸ¦‘
