In olden days people saw Heron as some of the saddest, wretched, depressed creatures. Perhaps they just saw themselves reflected? Today people who stop to watch describe us as meditating, thoughtful, wise, and seeing the world better than most. Again, reflections. 💙 (1804)

Bitterns are Herons too. But so shy about it. In the past, where at the edge of bog & mire imaginations ran free, they were known as butter bump, bitter bum, bog butter, bog drum, boom bird, bottle-bump, bull of the bog, bull of the mire or bumpy cors. The call was called bumping or booming 🪶
