As of yesterday, the NE corner of Broadway & 12th Street is also known as Fred Bass Way. Bass (1928-2018) took over the family business in 1956 and, the following year, moved the Strand Bookstore from 4th Ave to its current location.

Say goodbye to another old-school NYC diner. Ownership of the Cozy Soup 'n' Burger on Broadway at Astor Place announced that the 54-year-old diner is closing on June 21. The reasons: Rising costs and declining business.

3 East Village residents are at the center of this story. Excellent piece by Samantha Maldonado.

Demolition isn’t so clear cut under New York’s Good Cause legislation. The gray area is one of the few reasons a landlord can evict rent-paying tenants in unregulated apartments under the 2024 tenant protections law. www.thecity.nyc/2026/05/13/g...

Lower East Side History Month is back, officially starting today, and bringing a packed calendar of events across the neighborhood. Over 70 local cultural and community organizations & small businesses are hosting exhibits, walking tours, talks, and festivals throughout the month: www.peoplesles.org

[Despite the cold temps] 2 signs of spring in the East Village. The first blooms on the wisteria at 35 Stuyvesant St., and the return of the fruit-veggie vendor on 1st Avenue at 6th Street. [Wisteria pic via a reader; vendor photo by @staciejoy.bsky.social]

Today marked the 115th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in NYC. The annual ceremony honors the 146 garment workers — mostly young immigrant women — who died in 1911. Volunteers also chalked victims’ names outside where they lived on the Lower East Side. 📷 @staciejoy.bsky.social

The line tonight (3/6/2026) for old-timer Panna II, the last restaurant standing at 93 First Ave. in the East Village … a surge in business thanks to a fictional John John and Carolyn B visit in the FX series 'John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette.'

Many thanks to @gaofnyc.bsky.social for nominating EVG for a 2026 GANYC Apple Award in the "Outstanding NYC Website" category. We're honored to be included in the mix with 2 excellent sites — OldNYC and Little Kid Big City. The awards ceremony is on Monday evening.

1 of my fave annual local events starts today — the New Colossus Festival. Over the next 6 days, 190 indie bands from around the world will be playing at 12 East Village-Lower East Side venues. Discovered a lot of off-the-radar bands here through the years. Info: www.newcolossusfestival.com

The calm before the blizzard warning tomorrow... here's a view of 7th Street in the East Village tomorrow. 18+ inches of snow could fall on NYC and the tri-state area Sunday into Monday.

Beloved NYC East Village neighborhood blog @evgrieve.bsky.social, which normally tracks news like restaurants & store openings & closings or cultural events like concerts in the park, is now reporting on ICE detentions evgrieve.com/2026/02/an-i...

The Joe Strummer mural on 7th Street @ Ave A in the East Village today. Feb. 6 is International Clash Day. KEXP in Seattle (AM Show Host John Richards) started this tradition in 2013, where the station honors the legacy of @theclash.com with deep cuts, covers and Clash tracks. www.kexp.org

The Village East by Angelika on 2nd Avenue & 12th Street has a slate of (mostly) Oscar nominees on view. And seats for four of them — "Blue Moon," "One Battle After Another," "Sinners" and "Bugonia" — are $5 during all screenings. (The screening times vary for these throughout the coming week.)

The Sunshine Cinema closed on this day in Jan. 2018 after 17 years. Landmark reportedly had the opportunity to buy the property but decided against it after the local Community Board voted down an application for a liquor license in 2012 for pre- and post-movie drinks & dinner. 1/2

Today, alcohol sales at theaters are as common as soda and popcorn. Anyway, this was the closest theater to my apt, and I spent a lot of time here. Today, there's a 9-story office building with a private dining club on the ground floor.

The East Village is remembering Stella Soltowska of Ray’s Candy Store (113 Avenue A). Stella, who worked at Ray’s for nearly 50 years, died last week at age 80. A memorial has formed outside the shop. Friends note the best way to help is to stop by and support the store. 📷 @staciejoy.bsky.social

Joe Strummer (aka John Graham Mellor) died on this day in 2002 at age 50. Here's a photo from Dec. 14 of Dr. Revolt's mural (the first iteration created in 2004) outside Niagara on Seventh Street and Avenue A in the East Village...

Here's Tompkins Square Park in the light snowfall this morning. Hopefully, some of the snow will stick around for the 34th annual tree lighting here today (Dec. 14) from 4-5 p.m. — an excellent East Village tradition.

The "50 Years of PUNK" show opens tonight (11/28) at the Ki Smith Gallery, 170 Forsyth St. on the LES. We got a sneak preview as John Holmstrom, the co-founder, editor, and illustrator of PUNK Magazine, and Ki Smith set up the show. Up through Jan. 11. Weds-Sun noon-6. 📷 by @staciejoy.bsky.social

For the 1st time, Streecha Ukrainian Kitchen has a menu posted outside its basement spot at 33 E. 7th St. in the East Village. A small but notable addition for a 51-year, no-frills staple run by volunteers to support St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church. Open Fri–Sun, 9–5. 📷 @staciejoy.bsky.social

The Charlie Parker Residence at 151 Ave B in the East Village is back on the market with a $7.2M ask. The landmarked 1849 townhouse, where Parker lived 1951–54, includes 4 full-floor apartments (plus a penthouse with a private deck) facing Tomkins Square Park. It was last listed in 2015 for $9.25M.

Appreciation post for Brooklyn-based artist BKFoxx's mural outside the Second Avenue F stop in the East Village ... a homage to John Carpenter's 1988 cult classic "They Live."

City officials, the Basquiat family and community members gathered today to unveil “Jean-Michel Basquiat Way” — the stretch of Great Jones St. between the Bowery & Lafayette. The artist lived & worked at 57 Great Jones St. from 1983 until his death in 1988. 📷 by @staciejoy.bsky.social

Desnivel Gallery opens its latest show today with "Service" by Gloria Maximo at JJ Cleaners & Laundromat on 5th St b/t 1st and 2nd Aves in the East Village. By showing art in unexpected places like this, Desnivel Gallery hopes to weave art into everyday life.
