The story of how a #Finnish woman traveled through the South, East, and North of #SriLanka during the height of the #civilwar, staying in the homes of families she met along the way, and how 34 years later, she had the good fortune to meet with one such family.

ezi.asokan.orgThe JourneyThis essay was written in 1992 by a Finnish computer science student at the University of Helsinki (while Linus Torvalds was building the early versions of the Linux kernel in the same building!). She traveled alone from Colombo via the southern coast to the East and then to Jaffna at the height of the Sri Lankan civil war. She had to pass through active warzones and through territories controlled by the different warring parties. In 2026, she went back to Sri Lanka. By an incredible stroke of luck, she managed to locate the Sinhala-Tamil family in Pottuvil with whom she had spent several days back in 1992.

Naturally, I started with Sir Arthur C. Clarke because every kid in Sri Lanka knew about the world-famous writer living in Sri Lanka at the time. I devoured everything Clarke wrote that I could lay my hands on (thanks to the extensive collection at the British Council and American Center libraries in Kandy, Sri Lanka, as well as the several science fiction books that my uncle in Canada sent me after hearing of my interest in the genre), and loved every bit of it.
