Confirmation from @maxkozlov.bsky.social and @nature.com on what I and other NIHers recently shared: NIH is banning research to inform policy. This counterproductive for anyone concerned with public health. open.substack.com/pub/27unihte...

NEW: The NIH is quietly restricting funding for research that evaluates how public policy impacts human health. According to internal documents I obtained, the agency no longer considers policymakers "mission relevant" — a massive shift for the biomedical funder. My latest for @nature.com:

Many House Republicans did, but Senate Republicans did not. Hence, the unconstitutional military action continues, despite your vote, sadly. It's clearly been more than 60 days by now that this has been happening...it's been like at least six months.

Trump wants Congress to bankroll his illegal war with Iran with a $1.5 trillion Pentagon budget. I voted no. Not a dime more for endless war. It's time to put people before the Pentagon. youtube.com/shorts/eec81...

Last weekend was hot. So hot. Climate change means we've got more weekends like that in our future. It'd be better if we didn't have climate change (working on it), but there's actually a surprising amount we can do to make extreme temps more bearable and less deadly right now. ➡️ HeatAgenda.us

"I have enough money to do research," says Shu, laughing. Meanwhile HHS shut off the NIH grant that funded related work on gene therapy for deafness at Harvard Medical School, because “woke” or something like that Shu trained in the very same lab that HHS defunded

Two researchers — one in Massachusetts and one in Shanghai — hoped for the same breakthrough: a gene therapy for deaf children. New Chinese investment in science propelled the one who got there first. n.pr/4weVi49

Late in the afternoon on Friday (yesterday), HHS/NIH did 2 things: 1) They RIFd more employees (despite the extreme staffing shortages). 2) They sent announcements to supervisors letting them know people in their chain of command will be moved to the career/policy “at will” status. 🧵1/3

I watched this and was underwhelmed. There are a variety of actions that can be taken, both public and anonymous, to resist changes that undermine science. Science advocacy is not one-size-fits-all; it is highly dependent on the time we have and whether we can do so freely given job constraints, etc
