This may shortly be turning into an American midterms account, kicking off with the absolutely nuts stat that this year has already broken the record for TV ad spend set by the 2024 *Presidential* election with a week to go. 2024: $11.20bn on ads 2026: $11.21bn on ads

Genuinely baffled this is still a thing in the age of streaming services. Even switching to digital ads, you'd think campaign spend would be sufficiently diverted to other methods to see a drop?

Feel like Labour should have made far more of a thing nationally about how their Muslim London Mayor was standing up against the Tories old white Westminster Council cabinet to defend pub goers honestly. Completely upends every narrative the far right try to push.

Michael Smith@smithmichaelw.bsky.social

Some pf my parents friend groups (rural Northumberland) we mocking the idea to ban standing up in pubs - fully under the belief it was a Khan policy not the local Tories

Remember back at school we had a question time of councillors ahead of local elections and for some reason the thing that really animated the panel was Labour's plan to pedestrianise the town centre. Every party predicting crime and economic doom, and within a year of completion, everyone liked it.

Which is all a way to say that there are people on the other place having an ungodly fit about Oxford Street for no other apparent reason than its Sadiq Khan doing it.

Loss of Bioware really feels like we're heading to a games industry built on break out indy hits made for 50p and garbage made by one of three companies that cost £5bn a pop.

This Wedgewood fake polls thing is wild. Looks a lot like a fake polling company got caught then attempted a colossal lie about it being a social experiment to shame the polling industry to try and get away with it.

The Starlink news shows that European cooperation on tech hardware is as important as European cooperation on military hardware. Economies of scale and the danger we're in demand we stop acting as competitors or we will cease to be able to defend our interests or direct our destinies at all.

Visiting home for a few days and living in cities really does mess with your perception of distance. The gym here is on the other side of town but is a shorter walk away than my regular one 'near' my flat.

Social media is just a big Number Goes Up game and I refuse to be judged by someone who fails to see that for playing Disco Elysium.

Can you celebrate by putting on the weirdest Halloween marathon you can come up with please.

No amount of psychosis induced fad dieting and conspiracist lifestyle advocacy is going to protect you from an outbreak of Russian lab plague. Or being hit by a car. Go eat a burger.

I would like Labour to think carefully about how often voters will reward those they don't agree with on everything for simply taking a stand on something, Burnham and social care being a good example, and how this may translate into other areas we have been a bit meek on.

How the conference clip of Kemi Badenoch challenging ethnonationalism shifted views of Badenoch (+) and Farage (-) vs those not shown it Badenoch: approval 47% (+10), disapproval 25% (-2) Net +22 (+12) Farage: approval 23% (-4), disapproval 57% (+6) Net -34 (-10) Burhman approval remains +14

Before the full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 people talking about the need for a vastly expanded European/British Space capability sounded like kids who were obsessed with science fiction. But it's the one area we desperately need our own foot hold in for security purposes and just don't.

We have some major cognitive dissonance with AI. The concept of AI that steals creative works, runs fascist bot farms, uses our water, makes educating our kids 10x harder: bad, oppose, ban. The thing that lives on your phone and lets you make fun pictures/vids for Facebook: good, friend, use daily.

Oh no I have just remembered one that almost completely broke a film for me. In Lincoln, there's a scene where the Senate votes on the 13th Amendment and the chamber is full, despite the fact the country is embroiled in a civil war and none of the seats of southern Senators should have been taken.

Not been living up to my bio recently, so a brief thread to rank a few games I've been playing for the first time following several Steam sales: Prey (2017): Absolute gem, slept on, the need to pick up lots of junk then giving your first enemies the ability to disguise as junk is fantastic. 9/10

Blue Prince: Sensational, a wonder, a triumph, a masterp-HOW DID IT EXPECT ME TO GET THAT-, a game that spoilers really do make pointless so play blind if you can. 9.5/10

Slay the Princess: A fun time and enjoyed the writing, polished enough to escape the gravitational pull of Itch.io where this stuff usually lives. A one time through and uninstall experience though. 7.5/10

A couple of bite sized puzzle games: Viewfinder: A proof of concept as much as a game, none of the other games has quite the rug pull moment of the first time you use the core mechanic 8/10 Superliminal: Fun and clearly inspired by the humour in Portal. Doesn't outstay its welcome. 7/10

Dishonoured 1: Showing its age and the art style is actively ugly but I think that's partly the point. Restarted it once I figured out the chaos system properly. Neat but honestly a lot less compelling than Prey when played in 2026. 7/10

Witcher 3: Much harder than it looks, beautiful, but god its long. Simultaneously some of the funniest and bleakest writing in fantasy gaming. Will give a score when I get anywhere near completing the story.

By far the likeliest replacement for Polanski in the Greens isn't one of the sensibles but Mothin Ali, who among other things, is a genuine extremist, unrepentant, transphobic, and a moron. Greens that predate the party's capture are going to need to do an awful lot of soul searching.

Badenoch talking about how broken the housing market is then announcing an inheritance tax policy that would incentivise old people to put literally all of their wealth into property rather than downsizing. Absolute illiterate lunacy that shows they don't understand the first thing about housing.

A Starmerite speech from Kemi really. The problems are big and she has no answers to fix them, and nice rhetoric that doesn't bear resemblance to actual policy. How can you claim the mantles of fiscal discipline and against racism while promising a fantasy iron dome and keeping Lam in Shad Cab?

Behind the many awkward Please Clap lines there really isn't much content to this from Badenoch. The only message people will hear is 'things are bad and we can't make them better'.

Draft Keeley Hawes and Richard Madden for a reunion in the TARDIS. First arc is about which former TARDIS crew mate has been secretly undercover while running the Dalek empire.

I'm not making this up, but there was an incredibly unnerving episode of Thomas the Tank Engine as a kid where he goes alone through thick fog.

In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?

In 2025 the five main party leaders were Starmer, Badenoch, Farage, Davey and Polanski. Feels supremely underpriced that, what, 4 of those may not be in post at the next election?

Burnham handed the Lib Dems so much of what they have been calling for over the last ten years, if they end up being the most wrong-footed by Burnham's conference speech that's entirely on Ed Davey.

Tom Gordon MP@tomgordonld.bsky.social

I listened to Ed Davey on the Today programme this morning, and frankly, I think he missed the point. The idea that we're keeping the triple lock to help millennials is at best for the birds, and at worst downright insulting. I say that as a millennial.
