Tom Hanks’s play This World of Tomorrow, which I saw at the Shed last year, is transferring to Broadway this spring, and I can only say that I find that…um…surprising

Just when you think the GOP can’t get more disgusting, Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy releases an ad in which his opponent’s mother calls her a liar—the opponent’s mother who hasn’t seen her daughter in decades because her pedophile husband was molesting her. Today’s GOP in a nutshell.

There was a seating snafu at the Long Day’s Journey screening and we had a couple hours to kill so I had to hang out and grab a drink with Jessica Lange and her assistants. It was hell!

Good news if you missed Jessica Lange’s astonishing 2016 performance in Long Day’s Journey Into Night: A film version is at the Chelsea Film Festival on Oct 15 at 7:30pm and Oct 17 at 1pm. I’ll be doing a Q&A with Lange and director Jonathan Kent after the first screening. Tix here: chelseafilm.org

I had the pleasure of seeing the 1986 Charles Strouse–Stephen Schwartz cult flop Rags in concert last night at CSC. Marvelous cast—including OG cast member Judy Kuhn!—singing the beautiful score with a radically rewritten book. This concert makes a very strong case for a revival.

What are songs that were initially quite minor in their artists’ catalogues but have subsequently become very major? I’ll start! Elton John: “Tiny Dancer” Queen: “Don’t Stop Me Now” David Bowie: “Life on Mars” Billy Joel: “Vienna”

Climate-change deniers are a menace to the world and it’s time to call them to account. How many more fires will it take until they stop their campaigns of willful ignorance?

At the show I saw tonight, a man in the audience *screamed* at the person next to them to turn off their distracting phone—which was itself EXTREMELY distracting. Granted, he’s probably mentally ill. But it’s always interesting when the policing does more damage than the crime.

Reminder: The Sound of Music is neither realistic nor remotely historically accurate. The characters sing and dance. They all speak in English. In real life, Georg married Maria in 1927, and they’d had two kids together by the time they left Austria (to Italy by train, not over the Alps by foot).

At that time, in 1938, the seven older children ranged in age from 17 to 27. And when Mary Martin played Maria, who is in her early 20, she was 45 years old. So the fact that some people can’t adjust to see past the skin color of an actor in this show does raise the question of why that might be.

A propos of nothing: Three of my favorite cast recording performances of all time are Annie Golden, Jonathan Hadary and Eddie Korbich on the original cast album of Assassins
