Our paper on the evolution of MUC19 in humans, Neanderthals, and Denisovans is finally out today in Science! This has been a six-year effort by 13 authors to weave together 3 separate but related evolutionary stories around this one gene (more on thread 🧡). www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

science.orgThe MUC19 gene: An evolutionary history of recurrent introgression and natural selectionWe study the gene MUC19, for which some modern humans carry a Denisovan-like haplotype. MUC19 is a mucin, a glycoprotein that forms gels with various biological functions. We find diagnostic variants ...

I am trying and failing to find a RTqPCR triplex assay for research use for SARS-CoV-2, flu and RSV - everything is a branded, automated assay. Can anyone recommend a research set of primers and probes?

Boulder Faculty Assembly passed a resolution calling for no extension of the OpenAI contract. Vote was 39-8-1 after suspending the bylaws. Everyone at CU Student Government public comment has been fired up about their corresponding resolution, talking about trust and societal impact. So energizing.

Shared governance would prevent these errors. "By a margin of 9-to-1, she says, those who stopped to cast their vote with a dry-erase marker said they did not. β€œThe people who decide we’re going to give this much money to ChatGPT are not the people who interact with students every day,” she says."

Today is the day to commiserate with Charles Darwin, on the 161st anniversary of his confessing to Charles Lyell that he felt "...very poorly today & very stupid & I hate everyone & everything." Here's more of the back story on Darwin writing about this not-so-good day. www.npr.org/sections/kru...

npr.orgCharles Darwin And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad DayGeniuses have it easy, right? They wake up and out pops the brilliance. Well, not really. And not if that genius is Charles Darwin, who's got lots to do and absolutely no desire to do it. Those days (...

Well, happy Charles Darwin is β€œvery poorly today & very stupid & hate[s] everybody & everything” to all who celebrate, because he wrote those words in a letter to his friend (and author of Principles of Geology) Charles Lyell 161 years ago today

I feel the need to note that the Romans don't really present 'power' (potentia, vis) as their chief virtue. Instead, the Romans were "always harping on fides ['faith, trust']" (Dioc. Sic. 23.1); Cicero gives the virtue where Rome surpasses others as pietas (piety, Cic. Har. resp. 9.19).

1. <stage whisper> I think he's talking to you! 2. Me fail English? That's unpossible! 3. "Ever see a guy say good-bye to a shoe?"; "Yes, once." 4. DON'T. MIND. IF. I DO! (The Shinning) 5. Abortions for some, miniature American flags for all!
