All well-known AI scrapers are now disallowed from accessing files hosted on File Garden. Note: Not much can be done to stop malicious scrapers from working around user agent blocks, but at least the well-known ones should be blocked.

The recent support has been amazing, thanks everyone! :D Unfortunately, our profits are still not great. It's not dire, but out of concern for long-term sustainability, we reduced the max size *PER FILE* for free users from 100 MB to 40 MB before it has a chance to become a problem. Explanation 👇

The 100 MB max per file was never a deliberate choice, but a technical limitation. We plan to lift it for non-basic supporters in the future. Until then, supporters stay at 100 MB max per file: filegarden.com/pricing This limit only applies to new uploads; existing files are fine.

Statistics showed 40 MB to minimize the ratio between affected users and storage costs: only 9.1% of free users have any file larger than 40 MB, despite that such files make up 32.4% of storage costs from free users. No other size threshold was this disproportionate (among multiples of 1 MB).

You can now support us monetarily through our website to unlock more storage, starting at $3/mo for 100 GB! filegarden.com/pricing We're phasing out the Patreon since it has more fees. If you've ever been a patron, we DMed you a $10 off discount code so you can switch without being double-charged.

File Garden should generally have much more consistent performance now! I implemented load balancing. Also, we switched to a much cheaper server host (with better specs). Storage costs are still high and going up though. Thanks for all the new Patreon donations lately, it helps a lot :D ❤️

Our costs from net storage use have increased another 10% this month, now $421/mo (in addition to the server costs ~$200/mo). I'm paying all costs out of pocket, and donations aren't keeping pace. So for now, I've unfortunately decided to decrease our free storage limit from 15 GB to 2 GB. (1/2)

If you're already over 2 GB, you just won't be able to upload more. You can see your usage in your garden's left sidebar. Paid tiers for more storage are in development. Sorry to lower the free limit before they're ready. Feel free to reply with any questions. I'll do my best to answer. (2/2)

We're aware the server has been going down a lot lately--we've been hitting memory bottlenecks from high server load. The site's traffic has been growing more and more over the last year, and the original backend developed several years ago isn't holding up well. (1/2)

Our backend is being rewritten to heavily optimize this, but that will take some time, so for now we'll just have to upgrade the server. On our current infrastructure, this unfortunately may take an hour or so of downtime. Apologies for doing this on such short notice. (2/2)

All done! Took much quicker than expected. Note that this upgrade hasn't completely eliminated all problems. It will merely hold them off to some extent until the full rewrite is ready. And we may perform another upgrade in the future if this one doesn't help enough.

🎉 The file.garden domain has finally been unblocked! Thank you everyone for your patience. (We'll disable our temporary-file-garden.link domain and fixer script in about 7 days, so if you're still using those, please remove them before then to prevent links from breaking.)

The file.garden domain is currently down. The website (filegarden.com) and all files are fine, but direct links are inaccessible. The issue seems to be on Cloudflare's end (our domain provider). I contacted them and will post as soon as they reply. Unfortunately the average response time is 3 days.

Porkbun replied: "We contacted the GoDaddy Registry on February 14, but we haven't received a reply yet. We sent the GoDaddy Registry another email this morning. We will keep you informed of any reply and we will continue to contact them."

Many have reported difficulties with Tampermonkey. I recommend Violentmonkey instead, as it doesn't have any such issues (and it's open-source!): violentmonkey.github.io Also, our script breaks some websites (YouTube, Google Accounts, etc.), so I suggest toggling it on only when it's needed.

I called Porkbun, and they confirmed I should receive a response (but not necessarily a resolution, since they could ask me for more details) either today or tomorrow.

To answer a FAQ, the temporary domain and script will only work for 7 days after file.garden is unblocked. Also, if you run a website with many file.garden links, add the above .js file as a script on your site to make your links work for everyone! Then your users don't need Tampermonkey. :)

GoDaddy confirmed they blocked file.garden for violating TLD community guidelines. This is the first I'm hearing of this, and they aren't clarifying how their guidelines were violated. They say our registrar Porkbun is responsible for appealing the block, so I'm in contact with them now.

As a temporary workaround, you can now replace "file.garden" with "temporary-file-garden.link" in URLs! This is temporary, so only some people will find it useful, but it's the most we can do for now. Porkbun's admin team is still looking into the case, and they won't be as active over the weekend.

No response yet, but I completed a domain transfer from Cloudflare to Porkbun and can now begin restoring the domain's functionality. We relied on Cloudflare for some of our infrastructure, so replacing that may take some time. Rest assured that all will be restored. Thank you for your support. :)

The domain is still inaccessible on Porkbun's DNS, so Cloudflare likely misunderstood the situation and was wrong to take blame (fortunately). The issue is likely on the .garden registry's end instead (unfortunately), which is owned by GoDaddy. I contacted GoDaddy and Porkbun and will update you.

Cloudflare has confirmed they blocked the domain intentionally, and they did not notify me of this or provide any explanation. I submitted a request to get it unblocked and asked for further details. More updates to come.

You are up to date.
