Stories like this one are heartwarming. We know that Faith as a cat didn't understand anything about this award. But for the folks who created it, the medal (I think) was a symbol of their humanity in the face of war.
During the London Blitz on September 9, 1940, Faith, a church cat at St Augustineβs near St Paulβs Cathedral, sheltered her kitten Panda amid fire and falling rubble.
Both survived. In 1945, Faith received a special PDSA silver medal for βsteadfast courage.β

The Western Front Ass'n has just posted a fantastic presentation by Professor Gary Sheffield looking back at the 1914 & 1940 British Expeditionary Forces. Highly interesting and informative!

#Bordeauxβs Monument aux morts once again offers a stunning reminder of the scale of Franceβs First World War sacrifice.
However, its location away from the centre-ville gave it a (perhaps unwarranted) feeling of neglect or, at least, marginal importance to the modern city. #1GM#FWWHist#WW1#FWW
I love these crisp autumnal mornings and the smell of a big slash/leaf pile going up in flames. It only took me a morning to get rid of everything. I was fortunate to get it done before it rains tomorrow.
A heckuva mission to the Big B and back in Target for Today. This was a case of making it home on a wing and a prayer.

Disturbed ranks amongst my favourite bands. Their haunting version of the classic sing "The Sound of Silence" is absolutely riveting. David Draiman's voice is the perfect vessel for the song, and gives the original a completely new twist. Highly recommended!

I'm almost finished with the brilliant memoir "Over the Top" by Arthur Lambert. This is an amusing vignette he relates about a prisoner in the Italian campaign that occurred in the autumn of 1918. It speaks for itself. Enjoy!

World War I is still relevant, as this tune demonstrates. Singer-songwriter Anita Joyce commemorates great uncle, killed in action in Flanders at age 19 on 13 October 1917.

Seeing this photo, I can't help but think of the PΓΊkel-men described by J.R.R. Tolkien in Return of the King. These stone figures lined the winding path up to Dunharrow and to my mind's eye resembled that statues in this photo.

These ancient stone figures in Kyrgyzstan are part of the long tradition of Turkic balbalsβhuman-shaped memorial stones found across the Eurasian steppes.
Many examples in Kyrgyzstan date to the 6th to 10th centuries CE and are linked to early Turkic funerary culture

I'm currently listening to the audible version of #RotK, narrated by the great Andy Serkis. This is one of my favourite passages in #LotR. I've read it so many times, yet am still deeply moved by the reunion of two soldiers after battle. Pp. 892-93 of the 1991 edition.

The Lost Battalion was an American unit that became separated from the American advance and surrounded by German forces. From Oct 2-7 1918 they resisted German attacks until an American force was able to relieve them. Of about 554 men 197 were lost, 150 taken prisoner and the remaining 194 rescued.
I recently picked up a copy of βOver the Topβ by Arthur Lambert. The author served with the HAC on the Western Front. My copy originally belonged to Horace G. Sennitt, who was in the same unit. He carefully made notations on the margins throughout the book. #WW1#FWW#WesternFront#BritishArmy

Here is an outstanding essay that a soldier wrote to "The Nation." It was published in the 21/10/1916 issue on pp. 104-106. This was a frank and realistic oped from the trenches to the living rooms of British homes. #WW1#FWW#WesternFront#BritishArmy#Tommy#History
I initially discovered "Some Reflections of a Soldier" while reading the anthology "Vain Glory," published in 1937. The essay was abridged and altered extensively in comparison with the original version from 1916. For comparison, here is the link to the 1937 version.

Ten Lives in Ten Days, we tell the story of Piper Daniel Laidlaw, VC.
