One of many, many people with this particular "real name". You might know me from... IDK. College? Did we work together once? Prodigy's old math forum? debian-devel? A certain social MUSH? xoogler slack? "Making Light" comments? (he/him)

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #OnOneLeg - birds seen balancing on one leg. I've used this pigeon from Manchester, who has clearly had a tough life, as a BOTD before. However, it for the theme so perfectly. #Birds #UKbirding #photography

Today's #BirdOfTheDay is #LMNO, any bird whose name starts with one of those letters. A female Orchard Oriole for two "O"s. #birds #photography #birdphotography

In 2020 I was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma that wasn't even given its modern name until the year I was born. I was treated with three weeks of radiation and then nothing, because it's just gone. It's so much nothing, I didn't even think of cancer treatment until I saw other's replies.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

This is stretching to just a few years before my birth, but this thing is now a museum piece that I, a person who has worked in a technical field for decades and who has a Masters in math, only know how to operate as a historical curiosity/hobby.

Time for another #BirdOfTheDay and today the theme is #Juveniles, any juvenile bird. The Alt theme is #Green, birds with Green backgrounds. Inspired by the two-fer that @atlanticbirding.bsky.social had, here's a juvenile European Robin outside Cambridge from July #birds #photography #ForJanet

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Seasonal; "any shot from Autumn/fall/whatever season you have now" This is a photo taken 368 days ago, so matches this late summer-to-fall transition we've got happening now. #birdphotography #birds #photography

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Black&White: "any bird with Black & White plumage" A Downy Woodpecker from this past January #birdphotography #birds #photography

I was thinking it was cursed knowledge that allowed me to look at a bug that the bsky Android app has with image alt text and predict the different ways it would manifest on the emoji 📍, ♨️, and 🇺🇸, but then I searched "cursed knowledge" on here and ... Okay, that knowledge was just obscure.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #LittleLegs, "any bird with small legs". (The Alt theme is "Brown", but meaning "any bird with a brown background") Carolina Wrens, like most wrens, have rather small legs. #birds #photography #MicroFourThirds #birdphotography

It's me, I'm the 95 to 98%. I remember discussing this with people on cohost (R.I.P.): a purely reverse-chronology timeline for me on Facebook would result in a feed flooded by two of my friends, and no ability to see anything else because of the volume. As it stands, I almost have that already.

rahaeli@rahaeli.bsky.social

--in actual practice, consistently and reproducibly across sites of all sizes, feature design, and levels of complexity, between 95 and 98% of users prefer an algorithmically salience-sorted timeline with content discovery and injection to a purely reverse chronological timeline.

Any 1-dimensional-feed fix of this involves some sort of algorithm suppressing the most voluminous posters. There's no way to show me that once-a-year update from my cousin without preferring that post over at least some of the 20 or more posts my college roommate has made this weekend.

The bsky Android app has some nasty off-by-one bug in their alt text editor. After any editing operation (character press, paste, backspace), if the cursor was anywhere other than the very end, it ends up one character to the left of where it should be. For typing, this means typing backwards.

This post is unavailable.

I've discovered that the bug is even more subtle than that: After any editing operation that doesn't leave the cursor at the end of the buffer, you end up one *UTF-16 code unit* closer to the beginning than you should be; if that's in the middle of an emoji, you can then break stuff.

#Reflections is today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme, "any bird reflection" Saw this female Mallard Duck out with her mate having breakfast on the river recently. Unfortunately the shots I have of them together don't have good reflections, so no twofer today. #birdphotography #birds #photography

Using the alternate #BirdOfTheDay theme today of #Coots&Moorhens, "any Coot or Moorhen will do". #birds #photography #birdphotography #MicroFourThirds

Today for #BirdOfTheDay, the main theme is #JKLM: "bird species starting with these letters", and the alt Theme is #Grey, "birds with Grey in its Plumage". I figure this bedraggled Mourning Dove qualifies as both. #birds #photography #pigeonsky

It's really weird to hear about what was just a local campus scandal from my son and then a week later see it covered in the NY Post as court papers drop.

Take that isn't actually hot: "Conspiracy theory" does not imply "false belief". There are conspiracy theories that are widely believed to be true with actual evidence behind them: e.g. the GM streetcar conspiracy. "Conspiracy theory"=="an explanation for what happened that hinges on a conspiracy"

Slightly warmer, again: These feedback mechanisms work whether the initial conspiracy theory has evidence behind it or not. We're most familiar with these mechanisms on conspiracy theories that are false, because most conspiracy theories are false, but the feedback mechanisms don't care.

Actual hot take: If someone is posting all the time about respirator masks and suppression of airborne pathogen research at the CDC, they need to be actively aware and on alert for these mechanisms in action. Yes, they may have stumbled onto a true conspiracy. If they keep digging, they'll hit BS.

Slightly warmer take: Another conspiracy theory with evidence behind it is that COVID-19 is fully airborne, not droplet spread, and that acceptance of this would demand different public health responses than we currently see and we don't see them because of a conspiracy to not frighten the economy.

Another take of about the same temperature: Believing in and promoting conspiracy theories feels good. It promotes feedback loops that tempt one to dive deeper to keep chasing that dopamine hit that comes from knowing THE TRUTH when most of society doesn't.

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #ShoreBirds, defined as "any bird on the shore", so I'm going to take that as license to post birds at a lakeshore, even if only one might be generally categorized as a "shorebird". #photography #birdphotography #birds

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #LookingDown: "any bird looking down/head lowered" An Eastern Kingbird from early August, head lowered so that you can just see a tiny spec of the orange crown stripe that pops up when they're angry. #photography #birds

I want to have this make me livid, that these are NOT American values, but the truth is that this is probably one of the most "that's what it said on the tin" things this administration has done. These are Trump values, and the US voted for them.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

BRENNAN: Nidal Hasan is in a wheelchair. Doesn't the administration risk livestreaming this and making him a martyr? Couldn't this be a risk to the homeland? MARKWAYNE MULLIN: No one has to watch it B: Well then why are you livestreaming it? MULLIN: The president is restoring American values

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Brown, any bird with Brown in its plumage. Here's a nice little Carolina Wren I was able to catch quite close last week. #MicroFourThirds #photography #birds

Today #Ducks&GeeseInFlight is the #BirdOfTheDay theme. Here's a Common Merganser shortly after takeoff from back in February when we still had some ice floating on the river. #photography #birds

The #BirdOfTheDay today and her theme is #Green: any birds or backgrounds that have Green in them. Going back in the archives to middle of last year, here's a very green bird and rather green background. #birds #MicroFourThirds #photography #OutMyOfficeWindow

I love how sending one's child to a private school is a decision it's fine to judge people for but spending $350K extra on a house to be in a "good" school district is "just the way things are" and barely even noticed as a decision at all, let alone one with moral implications.

For today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme, I'm going with the alt. theme of #GardenBirds ("any bird that you might see in your garden") because I don't have any new wading bird photos for the main theme. A female Downy Woodpecker in my actual back garden. #photography #birds #OuMyOfficeWindow

Often when I post a Northern Mockingbird for the #BirdOfTheDay, it's because of its singing, but although "crooners" is the main theme today, this photo is for the is alt theme of #Eating. #birds #photography

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BlueWater, birds surrounded by Blue Water. I saw this Mallard Duck couple out having breakfast on the river early yesterday. #birds #photography #microfourthirds

Damn, the AI reply bots are good. I wonder, do they burn more tokens replying to real conversation or to markov-driven nonsense? Experiment currently going on in my latest BOTD thread.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay is #BirdSupermodel ("Any bird captured looking like it's posing for a magazine cover shoot"). This is such a comic book cover pose I had to use it, even though it means posting the same bird two days in a row. #birds #photography

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BlueSkies ("any bird against a blue sky") I think I've shared other shots of this mockingbird, but not this one. #birds #photography

Good morning; today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #WingsOpenNotFlying ("birds with their wings open when not flying"), with an Alt theme of #Blue. This female Mallard drying off that I shot the other day might work as a two-fer. #birds #photography #microfourthirds

Today’s theme for #BirdOfTheDay is #BlackandRed A bit late today, but here's one of the standard two North American birds for the theme: a male Red-winged Blackbird.

Listening to the "gift of wire" episode of Lateral with Tom Scott (@tomscott.com) and wow it's frustrating when the setup is something you know instantly but the panelists are just completely, utterly clueless on. My dad kept such a wire (that he'd gotten from Hopper) on his cubicle wall at work.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay is #BestBeaks ("any bird with a beak or bill that has striking colours, bold profiles, or an interesting shape") I don't think there's anything better for that theme in my photo roll than these Oystercatchers I saw in the UK in April. #birds #photography

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Black&White ("any shot in black and white") A White-breasted Nuthatch outside the office window from early last month. #birds #photography #microfourthirds

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BestOfTheMonth, meaning September 2026. Going with another image of the Red-tailed Hawk I shared for the #Raptors theme earlier this month. #birds #photography #microfourthirds #LookingAtYou

Today's theme for #BirdOfTheDay is #EFG, birds beginning with any of those letters (1st name). So here's a Great Blue Heron seen a few weeks ago locally. (At a bit of a distance) #birds #birdphotography #photography #microfourthirds

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BokehBirds ("any bird captured with a soft, muted or blurry background; bonus points for any bokeh balls') I've posted this mockingbird before, but I don't think I've posted this shot. #birds #photography

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Seabirds with an alt of #Airborne, so like many people today I'm posting a gull in flight. Specifically, one of the Ring-billed gulls that have now returned for the season from their breeding grounds up north. #birds #photography

I don't have a recent photo for today's #BirdOfTheDay theme ("Borbs", birds looking plump) that I haven't already used for a BOTD, so I'm going with the Alt theme of #Brown, birds with Brown in their plumage. House Sparrow (female), just hanging out. #birds #photography #birdphotography

For #BirdOfTheDay today, the theme is #TheDivers ("any diving bird") Here's a Great Cormorant from Reading from this past April. #Birds #UKbirding #Photography #BirdPhotography
