I have stopped going to thrift stores. Because the clothing wreaks of fabric softeners. I used to thrift the better brands, like LL Bean, Vermont Country Store, Eddie Bauer, etc. But it's impossible to rid even these brands of the forever chemicals in softeners. Please don't use them.

WOWEE! New Poll Alert! Democrat Dwayne Romero of Colorado US D-3 now has a 1% lead over his Republican opponent and Trump ditto mark, Rep. Jeff Hurd: 47%-46%. Also, a shout out to the enthusiastic cavasser who came to my door yesterday in a thunder storm to get out the Dem. vote. He saw my signs!

Coveting the historic globe Eisenhower used "as he plotted the D-day landings as allied supreme commander," Hegseth ordered his aides to move the important piece of history into his office. Instead of waiting for experts who move historic artifacts for a living, they dropped it. Once again, chaos.

Yes, parents do have reason to worry when dropping a child off at school. But not for the asinine reason Tr@mp imagines. Parents worry their 5, 8, or 11-year old could end up dead, or in the hospital, their body ripped open by bullets. Thoughts and prayers are not enough. We need stricter gun laws!

Corruption that causes poverty is how the rich stay in control. This story's about young Afghan girls being sold as brides, delivered to their future in-law's home as soon as the dowry is paid. Why? Becuause drought and a lack of foreign aid impoverished their families. Most are pregnant by 14.

theguardian.com‘I am still a child, it cannot be good to be married’: how drought forces Afghan families to sell girls as bridesAs climate breakdown pushes families to starvation, many feel forced to ‘sacrifice’ daughters to save siblings, with girls as young as eight and 10 engaged or married to repay debts or pay for food

Even if you only use your public library to check out an occasional movie, there are plenty of people who go there for internet access, adult literacy classes, after school activities, toddler storytime, and BOOKS! Don't forget to read your mid-term ballot measures!

Waking at what I considered too early an hour, I listened to pyschiatrist Bandy Lee doomsaying the midterms on LegalAF's YouTube channel. All is probably lost, I gathered. Giving up on sleep, I resumed reading from Jhumpa Lahiri's 2023 Roman Stories and was reminded: all is not lost, only broken.

My US representative, Jeff Hurd (R-CO), finally said "boo" to Trump, and spoke out against public execution. But isn't it weird that Republicans who revile drag shows - they say such exhibitions go against God and country - are chomping at the bit to let the nation watch a prisoner be shot to death?

An example of rural health care: on Friday, my husband had cataract surgery at a clinic where the doctor only comes in once a week. One elderly couple had driven 4 hours to get there. Another drove 2 1/2 hours and had to be there at 4 a.m. Everyone had to have follow-up exams the same day.

Amazon wants your kids! Rememeber poring over the Sears Christmas toy catalog, circling everything you wanted Santa to bring you? Well now Amazon has their own toy catalog full of action figures, huggy bears, and building sets - all ready for Mom and Dad to scan for prices. NO THANKS!

When a Kansas high school junior reported her golf coach for sexual harrassment and inappropriate touching, he quit that post but was allowed to remain as superintendent with just a warning. Months later, amid community outrage, he resigned. But what about his victim? hutchpost.com/posts/f847ff...

Online influencers are working for the food industry - like lobbyists, only cooler - to try and convince us that all the things we thought were bad for us are actually "safe." Check out my recent Family Field Guide blog post for my take on the food wars. familyfieldguide.com/2026/09/30/o...

This really happened: Meta's AI agent Muse gave out a Facebook Marketplace seller's home address without permission, making an appointment with a buyer to pick up an item when the actual seller wasn't at home. A FREAKING AI personal assistant! Now, that's scary. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

FCC Communications Director Brendan Carr: Just another Tr@mp sycophant who needs to please his "daddy." The Guardian hits the nail on the head with a quote at the end of the article, written in a letter by a former Carr friend who was trapped in the same AA cult.

Trump tv, aka "state tv," is bombing out. The Guardian compares the effect of watching the While House YouTube channel, which has no schedule, no on-screen description of what is being shown, and zero context..." to "a 24-hour fever dream of self-soothing propaganda for the Maga faithful."

Peter Thiel and JD Vance are Curtis Yarvin disciples. IMO, they all missed the attachment stage in infancy, and don't know why they have empty holes for souls. "Yarvin is the chief thinker behind the 'Dark Enlightenment'...that openly promotes dictatorships as superior to democracies."

newrepublic.comWhere J.D. Vance Gets His Weird, Terrifying Techno-Authoritarian IdeasYes, Peter Thiel was the senator’s benefactor. But they’re both inspired by an obscure software developer who has some truly frightening thoughts about reordering society.

First thing this morning I told my husband about a good review of books on AI published in The Guardian, on AI's founders, their eugenicist orientation, and where they think the world is headed. My husband said he had more important worries: last night's rain might have washed away his carrot seeds.

It was 7:20 p.m. - kind of late - when a new mail carrier pulled up at our house, opened the mailbox door, and inserted a single letter. She didn't just close the door, she made sure it was secure, pushing on it twice. That's what our mail carriers do. They ensure that our mail is safely delivered.

The Texas legislature has banned 1, 738 books, including US Senate candidate James Talerico's favorite - Lonesome Dove, the Texas classic by Larry McMurtry. Why? Because one of his characters, Lorena Wood, is a prostitute - a profession Tr@mp's grandfather had absolutely no problem exploiting.

Oh, no! What to do with leftover fudgy frosting that somehow didn't wind up on the cupcakes, about a quarter of an inch of peanut butter at the bottom of the jar, and some apple slices that my husband didn't take to work? I'll give you one guess.

When people spread conspiracy theories about 9-11, it tells me they have no desire to help find solutions to anything in this world, and would rather sit on their cans listening to modern-day Right Wing prophets of doom. Yeah, I just got off the phone with my brother.

I was listening to Vermont Public Radio, washing the breakfast dishes, but the story seemed unreal. Then just before the second tower was struck, the station went live to New York. It was real. We were under attack. My daughter's school was miles away, and I flew out of the house to find her.
