$3.458: Average gas prices during Trump's second term now exceed the overall average from Biden's four years in office. The national per gallon average poses a severe political challenge just one week before the midterm elections as a foreign war drives up fuel costs.

finance.yahoo.comGas prices under Trump are now higher on average than during Biden's time in officeNew data from the Energy Information Administration showed that gas prices since Jan. 20, 2025 have averaged $3.458 per gallon — the first time in President Trump's second term that overall average gas prices have surpassed the average seen during President Biden's four years in office. The weekly government data, released Tuesday, shows a reading of $4.269 per gallon for Oct. 26, which nudged up the average price under Trump — from Jan. 27, 2025 to this week. It has now surpassed the $3.455-per-gallon average seen from Jan. 25, 2021, to Jan. 20, 2025. Trump's gas price record is narrowly favorable to Biden's when comparing the first 91 weekly readings of both men's presidencies. "US Regular Gasoline Prices" from Jan. 25, 2021 to Oct. 24, 2022 averaged $3.517 per gallon. Biden oversaw a spike in prices — including the highest gas prices on record of $5.006 per gallon the week of June 13, 2022 — as the US confronted oil shocks that followed Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The new numbers come exactly one week before the midterm elections and underline a clear political challenge for Trump and his party as polling shows that voters blame the president for gas price increases, which spiked immediately following the invasion of Iran earlier this year. Read more: What an extended war with Iran could mean for gas prices The gas price data also cuts against the president's message, which has been a consistent promise since the 2024 campaign to lower energy prices through new drilling. Just this past weekend at a rally in Georgia, Trump offered his oft-repeated message that high gas prices are worth it, describing them as "temporarily high." "You're still paying lower than Biden or Obama," he said. Yet gas prices in Trump's second term are now essentially equal to Biden's and are significantly higher than the $2.476 per gallon average seen during Trump's first term as well as the $2.969 per gallon average during President Obama's eight years in office, according to a Yahoo Finance analysis of the EIA data.President Donald Trump speaks to the press at Joint Base Andrews inMaryland, on Monday. (Kent NISHIMURA / AFP via Getty Images)KENT NISHIMURA via Getty Images At the Georgia rally, Trump celebrated another effect of high gas prices: bigger oil company profits. "Our country is making hundreds of billions of dollars because of what's happened in the Middle East," the president said, citing increased exports of US oil at higher prices. He added that his advisers urged him not to make that point and acknowledged that bad headlines could follow, "but I said, 'I don't give a damn, I'm going to say it: We are making a freaking fortune.'" Illinois man charged with mailing envelopes containing white powder and mocking notes to members of Congress. Matthew Unglesbee admits to sending the fake anthrax threats after an online tip alerts the FBI, notably including his own name and return address on the mailings.

(Graeme Sloan / Bloomberg via Getty) WASHINGTON — A man has been charged in Illinois with mailing four letters containing a white granular substance to members of Congress, all of which were sent in envelopes bearing his name and home address. Matthew Unglesbee has been charged with sending threatening letters containing a white granular substance to three members of Congress, along with a handwritten letter that read “HA HA.” A fourth letter with a white granular substance included the note “HAH enjoy the gift.” Unglesbee faces two charges: false information and hoaxes and mailing threatening communications. He will make an initial appearance in court Monday afternoon.A letter received by the district office of a member of Congress on Wednesday with a white granular substance spilling from the unopened envelope. The photo has been redacted for privacy. (U.S. District Court) In an interview with FBI personnel Sunday, Unglesbee is alleged to have admitted that he mailed four letters to four members of Congress after he heard about other letters mailed earlier in the month. The FBI is separately investigating letters containing suspicious substances that were sent to members of Congress and elections officials in recent weeks. Unglesbee admitted that he knew that people would perceive the letters as dangerous, the FBI said. He said in the FBI interview that the granular substance was salt, which he said “kind of looks like” anthrax, authorities said. He denied involvement with prior mailings, they said. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., said Monday she was “aware of reports that a suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the most recent suspicious letter sent” to her district office. The congresswoman received a second suspicious letter on Oct. 21. “I’m aware of reports that a suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the most recent suspicious letter sent to my Skokie office,” she said in a statement thanking law enforcement. “I will not let threats stand in the way of serving the people of the 9th District. My community relies on the services our office provides, and my team and I will continue doing the work I was elected to do.” A search of Unglesbee’s residence turned up a fifth unmailed and empty envelope that was addressed to a member of Congress, according to the FBI. The case began after an anonymous online tipster told the FBI that they overheard Unglesbee talking about mailing a suspicious substance to members of Congress. The tip was received on Oct. 16, and the FBI responded when the letters showed up at the offices of members of Congress three days later. Two British men face national security charges for an alleged plot against U.S.-run RAF Fairford air base in England. Prosecutors accuse the 24-year-old men of assisting Iranian intelligence and attempting to infiltrate a facility where American bombers recently launched strikes against Iran.

yahoo.com2 men charged over suspected Iran-linked plot at U.S. bomber base in EnglandLONDON (AP) — Two men were charged Tuesday with national security offenses over a suspected plot against RAF Fairford, a U.S.-run military air base in England, police and prosecutors said. British nationals Mohmed Ahmad Abdulkarim and Nouman Essghir, both aged 24 and from London, were charged under the National Security Act, the Crown Prosecution Service said. They are due to appear in court later Tuesday. Abdulkarim is charged with assisting Iran's intelligence service and Essghir with entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the U.K. RAF Fairford, in western England, has been used by American bombers to strike Iran during this year’s war. Essghir was arrested outside the base on Sept. 27, when armed police officers and army bomb-disposal experts swarmed the rural area. Scores of residents were evacuated from their homes as police and army bomb-disposal experts searched for explosives. Police later said they had found a quantity of an accelerant — gasoline — in vans at the scene, but no explosives. Essghir was initially released on bail before being re-arrested last week. Abdulkarim was arrested in the past week. Six other men have been arrested and released on bail as investigations continue. British authorities have linked Tehran to the incident, which led the U.S. to pull its bombers from RAF Fairford. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said that the apparent plot was “almost certainly” directed by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. Iran has denied involvement, although it has previously said that it considers any base used to attack its territory a legitimate target. Earlier this month, the head of Britain’s MI5 spy agency warned that both Iran and Russia were expanding their attacks against the U.K., and that the RAF Fairford incident was not unique. Ken McCallum, who leads the U.K.’s domestic security service, said Tehran is seeking to intensify its attacks in Britain beyond the traditional targets of Iranians opposed to the country’s Islamic authorities. He said more than 50 people have been arrested over Iran-linked plots in the past year. “We have seen a range of incidents in recent months that we believe have been directed by the Iranian state, and as the director general of MI5 said just the other week, we are working together to intervene, identify and respond to that threat,” said Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, the head of National Counter Terrorism Policing in the U.K. ___ A previous version of this story incorrectly said Abdulkarim is a British-Iranian national. He is British. This article originally appeared on Associated Press at https://www.yahoo.com/news/world/articles/uk-prosecutors-2-men-charged-091007409.html
