Thx @law360.bsky.social for this write-up of the extraordinary efforts of a few judges—and now the DOJ—to block a one-word addition aimed at making Fed. R. Evid. 609 a shade less heinous. As always, your Coalition for Prior Conviction Impeachment Reform (www.reforming-pci.org) stands ready to fight.

A yearslong effort to make it harder for prosecutors to invoke a criminal defendant's past convictions appeared to be gaining traction — until the senior executive arm of the Judicial Conference recently intervened and the DOJ withdrew its support of the proposal. www.law360.com/artic...

Patent data before and after acquisitions by 8 big tech giants show that, on average, the ‘Big Eight’ firms appear to invest in the acquired technology rather than kill it. Acquired inventions become more influential, more widely cited, and more embedded in follow-on innovation.

I did wonder which platform would cater to the demand for mean-spirited attacks on economists now that the market leader has been put out of business, but I didn't expect it to be The Economist.

Excited to share a new working paper with Vincent Abraham and Catarina Marvão: Using the population of legal cartels in Sweden, we provide the first empirical evidence that common ownership can facilitate explicit collusion. www.nber.org/papers/w35565

The setting lets us observe cartel formation, duration, and dissolution without selection bias. We find that firms with higher profit weights (κ): • are more likely to join cartels, • predict future cartel participation, • sustain longer-lived cartels, and • reduce κ after cartels dissolve.

Delighted to see Lisa Kahn and Isaac Sorkin taking over as co-directors of the NBER Labor Studies Program. Two outstanding economists and thoughtful leaders. Congratulations to both, and especially to Lisa, who has been a wonderful friend and colleague for many years.

I emailed Paul Klemperer to see if I could share the link to the Jim Mirrlees auction more widely and he agreed. As Bulow & Klemperer (AER 1996) show, having an additional bidder is more important than the specifics of the auction.

The 2026 World Cup has shattered one of soccer's favorite myths. The biggest draws aren't England, France, Germany, Spain or the young stars. They're Mexico, the USA, Argentina, Brazil, and Messi (39) & Ronaldo (41). GOATs, immigration, and geography matter much more than FIFA rankings.

Respectfully here to note there is a 2014 paper from my soccer-obsessed friends showing that, even for the South Africa WC in 2010, the US, Brazil, and Mexico were 3 of the top 4 non-African travelers. No surprise that this may be even more so w/US & Mexico hosting. academic.oup.com/jae/article-...

Great arguments explaining why the court got the wrong answer in the antitrust case against Meta.

Steve Salop, Allan Collard-Wexler, Marty Gaynor, Nancy Rose, Larry White, and I joined an amicus brief supporting reversal in FTC v. Meta. The district court's market-definition analysis departs from basic economics and risks weakening Section 2 enforcement in digital markets.

Nobody is better at restoring the public's trust in universities than a NY Times columnist lecturing students on "how to fall in love with someone" ... ... or "how to divorce your wife of 27 years for your much younger research assistant"? We are not serious institutions.

George Serafeim didn't disclose that he was collaborating with green investors while publishing (now discredited) research on the returns to such investments. HBS did nothing and even promoted his research. At the same time Ben Edelman disclosed his COIs and HBS still fired him.

Remember Ran Duan, the restaurant owner overcharging customers? Turns out he's a media-savvy celebrity with luxury watches, a jet-set insta, diamond-draped models, shady business practices, drugs, a young woman's fatal overdose in his home, and a stunning failure to act.
