Look, I know all the reasons we got here, but we really need to start seriously thinking about what we do in a world where The Markets punish whole countries for voting for decency, compassion, and fairness. We must stop pretending the capitalist machine is an objective, value neutral force.

It's very, very telling, I think, that the markets are so concerned about the pro-democracy incumbent winning

One thing about the whole "you have to read books if you want to be an author" thing is that if you aim to do more than just genre inbreeding, you have to read stuff outside the genre you're writing, too. May even have to read [shudders] nonfiction.

Lovecraft's writing is like "let me tell you about this guy who saw fucked up stuff, oh yeh i was there too and experiencing it but the other guy my bro who i devote more words to than the horrors hes the guy"

The core of me getting into ttrpgs was thinking "i want a game that does x" and never would i have imagined the popular sentiment of "just put into an incompatible game" thats batshit crazy so i just found other games... and like judged them on how well their mechanics worked... like other games

1. DnD 5e 2. Savage Worlds 3. Dungeon World 4. Masks: a new generation 5. Ironsworn Then its mork borg and mothership and its all a rush from there.

David Blandy makes games sometimes@davidblandyrpgs.bsky.social

1. Red Box D&D solo 2. Warlock of Firetop Mountain 3. Warhammer FRP 4. Five eeee 5. Cthulhu Dark Then down the OSR/NSR rabbit hole

I read a lot more games that i didnt play them, for example i read Blades in the Dark not long after getting into dnd which broke my brain. (being too autistic to realise other people dont search for other games doing different stuff)

Savage worlds was something i picked up because i thought 5e combat was shit but needed something still familiar and lite in its tactical combat; i liked it a lot. Then I went through a narrative game hyperfixation and then a nsr one, the former fit my old group better the latter fit my latest.

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

Kinda annoyed that 'incredible artistic vision and game design by an AA studio with a little jank' is given the same 7/10 as a 'Confused, Bland and Boring but very polished AAA game made with big IP'

I really like in mothership just asking for saves whenever they encounter something gross (body) horrifying (fear) eerie (sanity) with the only negative being taking stress and asking/giving some negative reaction (puking, yellong, crying).

It seems to go against common advice of rolls but fear does push the game forward (hence every failed roll does in mothership, no roll is useless) and whether characters get affected by what they see, or swallow it down, and how they behave in regard to it, is some great characterisation.

Video games are constantly reminding you vital information: "cut off their limbs" "fire destroys the biomass" - yet for some reason the moment it comes to TTRPGs people the general done this is: "why yes the players should magically intuit these things of course"

My mothership solo rules have hit a big snag (besides life getting busy) on where to go with it, particularly how to order it. (Maybe im overthinking it) do i: 1. keep it as it is, closer to the mothership manuals themselves where its each action + advice (think like solitary defliment)

So 1. Has headlines like - Violence - Hiding - Searching - Stress. With infromation for use across all sects of the game But 2. Has the same headlines but ordered under "Navigating Space", "Navigating the social" that repeat themselves but focus only on that part of play.

1. Is something you read and refer to but play without. - this is more familiar 2. Is something you use as a play aid at the table (with way less page flicking) - This is newer but i think an important space to push solo play information design. Does make any sense? Thoughts?

Combat in horror games is best when - its a temporary solution (scares away / respawning enemies) - limited resources (tension of falling short) - theres a time limit before it worsens (ie. Cronos new dawn kill them before they get stronger) - you can avoid it if needed (run)

- weapons are also tools (ie. Amnesia the bunker you use the gun to disarm mines ect) - their is a risk to using the best weapons (also The bunker, where firing the gun is loud which attracts it) - combat is a puzzle in of itself (dead spaces limb cutting)

Blog Post titled "do you want to make a horror game?" About how many OSR designers end up designing a horror game (and yay thats why i like them) without ever the intention to be designing a horror game (certainly not how old school dnd is supposed to be, right)

i dont really want to uphold the "there's an alien race of hot blue babes and they're all traditionally feminine lesbians" game studio as the pinnacle of queer expression in the AAA space lol

Am i crazy for not understanding where all the sympathy for bioware studios stems from? beyond people losing their jobs ofc. But their recent games was a mass effect gamed memed for a bad ending, inquisition which was mid as fuck, anthem which was... anthem, and veilguard which was embarrassing

And bear in mind inquisition (a time waster of a game i despise) came out when i was 12. Their development was slow and plagued by absolute mismanagement. It seems mostly nostalgia which they dont have for audiences of my generation (and i loved dragon age 2 as a child, a game also criticised)

#SpookySunday The Reader's Digest condensed edition of Shirley Jackson's 'The Haunting of Hill House' featuring illustrations by Ben Stahl, 1960. #Gothtober.

Is a tv even worth getting? Like smart tvs have awful ui, are super slow and spy on you. They always look like shit no matter how much you toggle the settings compared to a monitor. And any (payed) app or service on there is plagued by ads, when a Laptop/PC can use adblocker.

This isnt including that the modern day living room situation if sofas staring at a tv sucks ass, when it should be sofas/armchairs facing each other. It seems to be better to use a monitor for personal viewings, and invest in a solid projector for movie nights.

"We have to censor pride pins or people yell at us online" regulate online spaces then. Dont post to x. Stand up to them regardless because youre an organisation? No, of course its a blatent excuse for transphobic censoring.

All the talk about lesser evil and nobody wants to acknowledge that abstaining from voting for a transphobic leader IS the lesser evil. It sucks, it hurts opposition to republican goals BUT voting for a transphobic democrat hurts opposition to republicans goals EVEN MORE

Anyway, transphobia - and thus restricted classifications of womanhood, legal strictures agaisnt queerness, and destruction of progressive politics - is a republican goal.

Getting to the end of the year everybody starts saying; "this year has gone quick" and its like yeh you dont count it as starting till march, and you think its over by september no shit - but also if you think a year is a quick every year maybe start learning its just not a very long amount of time?
