I may be missing something here but, even if (big IF by the way) someone in a car tried to hit an "officer" surely the appropriate response is to arrest the individual and try them in court. Shooting at point blank range cannot be the correct action.

This thread epitomises the problem with Blue sky. Views held by interested non-professionals are corrected by genuine experts only to be dismissed. I'm not saying that COVID doesn't cause immune dysregulation, it does. But blaming the flu epidemic on this is a stretch

Conor Browne@brownecfm.bsky.social

The highest rate on record. It staggers me that no-one in public health seems to be acknowledging that immune dysregulation caused by prior SARS-CoV-2 infection is likely a significant factor in this, and the implications of this concept going forward. abcnews.go.com/Health/flu-a...

I'll get a lot of grief for this, I have no doubt, but this is a superb bit of journalism. If only more people realised that the current Labour government, for all its faults, is a genuine force for good.

This is moving. Kamala Harris feels the pain we feel. Not just from her loss, but from the trauma and abuse our country is living through. What could have been…

I notice the loyal Trump base are beginning to see the problems caused by their beloved Orange blob. I'm rather worried that there will be a repetition of this on my side of the Atlantic in a few years time if Reform gets any sort of power

I'm furious. The combination of Labour supporters thinking Starmer is too right wing, the Conservatives wanting to attack the Labour government just because that's what they do and the press attacking Starmer Because he's the Labour leader means Starmer is toast.

He's an offer to any Canadians who would normally travel to the US on vacation but want alternatives. I think Europe can offer almost everything the US has. Tell me what you would look for and I'll try to come up with somewhere in Europe that can provide it.

A lot has been written criticising the welfare changes announced yesterday. And reducing PIP to save money is bordering on the criminal. But, the system did need reform. To have a financial disincentive to seek work is surely wrong. The uplift for those looking for employment must be good.

Trump got to be President because people thought Democrat policies were flawed. A similar situation exists in the UK. Left wing Labour supporters are cross with decisions made by the Starmer government. This will enable a right wing leadership after the next election. It makes my blood boil.

Blue Sky can be as bad as X sometimes. The only difference being that the unpleasant and argumentative types are left wing rather than right. Earlier today I was accused of being a Eugenicist because I thought there were some people on PIP who would be better off if they were in a job.

As I suspected, the actual changes are nothing like the scaremongering stories that were in the press. PIP not reduced or frozen, UC increased, no loss of benefits for those who try to get a job.

The NHS is improving rapidly under Labour. You won’t hear it from the right-wing press, but the stats speak for themselves. 5 *evidence-backed* ways it’s getting better:

Well, the Domesday predictions by the right wing press were wrong about the impact of VAT on private schools. I wonder if they have overstated the impact of changes to PIP as well.

There is a lot of conjecture about the changes to benefits in the Spring statement. And, if the Labour government reduce benefits for the poor and the disabled I will join others in labelling them as Tories in disguise. But, suppose it's more carefully considered than that 1/

These people need support but putting them in a situation where there is no financial incentive to work and no support to help them work (such as good mental health treatment, cheap transport etc), is not helping them. 3/

So, if the benefit system is overhauled so that those unable to work get financial support and those in work with disabilities get the financial help they need, while those able to work get the help to allow them to work then I'm in favour 4/4

First off, let me be clear, people with disabilities should not have their benefits cut, and people in work with disabilities should get benefits to cover the extra costs of working with disabilities. But, there are people who are on benefits who have mild to moderate mental illnesses 2/

The UN allows assets to be seized without a criminal conviction in cases of corruption where the perpetrators cannot be prosecuted for reasons of "flight, death or other appropriate cases"

We may look back at the 28th Feb as a watershed moment when Europe discarded the US as an ally, developed relationships with other countries (especially Canada) to move towards a democratic and fair approach to international politics.

The Labour government has created 2 million extra NHS appointments, improved employment rights and started free breakfast clubs for 180,000 of the poorest children. Yet all we hear about is farmers paying inheritance tax, the NI rise and how it reduces profits and Starmer's free glasses....

People don't seem to care because they are selfish. We have seen what a selfish attitude caused in the US. If we continue being worried about paying tax and not caring about the poor we are heading the same way.

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

Question for anyone who understands international trade, tariffs and world economics. What would happen if China, India, Canada, Mexico and the EU agreed tariff free trade while imposing huge tariffs on the US thus isolating the USA?

It’s official: all funding requests made on Tuesday by postdocs for their salaries have been unilaterally rejected by NSF.

He clearly thinks this is funny. Given the fact that he is of mixed race heritage, the irony here is quite painful. Would he think it was equally amusing if strangers donned KKK robes and marched outside his house?

I recently had a conversation here where I was accused of misogyny because I made a comment about a female artist who was going to perform at Trump's inauguration. The artist was Carrie Underwood. I do not watch Britain's got Talent, the voice or any of the shows that seem to create stars /1

Fanny Mendelssohn, during her life, was more famous than her brother Felix, although the works of Felix are more famous now, largely because of the bias against women in the classical music world/5

Now, I felt that was a tad unjustified, so, to redress the balance here are some thoughts on women composers. Although there have been thousands of talented women composers over the years, none of them are as famous as male composers /3

For example, Luise Le Beau (b 1850) was a German composer who wrote her first piece at the age of 8. As a teenager she toured Germany as a concert pianist and she later studied with Clara Schumann. Despite this, no music publishers would publish her work and no Universities would employ her /4

So, not surprisingly, I'd never heard of Carrie Underwood. I have however heard of the Village People because they were quite famous in the UK. This, apparently, makes me a misogynist. /2
