WiFi joined but not connected. A dozen laptops open in the coffee shop. Surely not all on hotspots. A sinking feeling, you can’t avoid it: “Is it me?”

Two things about urban design articles like this: 1. Of the story is about a geometry problem, you include a photo or diagram of the geometry. 2. If you act like you have a both-sides fetish, maybe don’t trim the cyclists words to sound anti-bike lane.

Gold Star Beer Counter sells Sey Coffee, and will fill a large reusable mug for $3, oops best coffee deal in the neighborhood.

Listening to 3 ads before every podcast on Spotify Premium where I pay to not get ads. The ad is for YouTube Premium. It’s touting ad-free watching. My eye twitches.

ppl at the top of orgs like to think that LLMs are replacing interns but for juniors they're mostly filling in for the lack of mentorship that's always been there.

I spent my time mostly not coding at our Maine van camp, but I cracked a couple beers and hammock camped one night and worked by the fire “for fun”, and I must say it felt rad.

“While we cannot discuss the specific allegations during pending litigation, we take this matter seriously.” Wouldn’t it be great if we collectively set an automation so that as soon as litigation ended we could get notified to go follow up with cowards that use this fig leaf?

I never want to start loudly musing that the apocalypse is approaching as weird cope for the fact that I am aging and will someday die. That would be incredibly embarrassing.

“Secularization, it turns out, does not automatically remove the human instincts for religion and liturgy, it just repurposes their worship.” Highly recommend this whole Hedgehog Review issue for more on this: hedgehogreview.com/issues/re-en...

This is another great, approachable explainer on “the rationalist wackos who have managed to take over much of the AI industry, and who now have tons of money and political power.” www.iankduncan.com/personal/202...

Fillets are _much_ better in KCL 3.0 (try it now by setting your version to "3.0-preview"). We added a new feature where fillets will continue around your model, following tangent edges (defaults to true, but can be toggled off). This makes it _much_ easier to apply fillets to your whole model!

Behold ```lean def zip {α β: Type} (xs: List α) (ys: List β): List (α × β) := match xs with | [] => [] | x' :: xs' => match ys with | [] => [] | y' :: ys' => [(x', y')].append (zip xs' ys') def words := ["oof", "that", "was", "hard"] def nums := [1, 2, 3] #eval zip words nums ```

I feel like I'm able to implement really hard software just by alternating between saying "wow, good idea, do it" or "boo, too specific, generalize it" these days

I think one of the frustrations that I may share with some LLM bears out there is that, as a humanist, I've taken for granted that people are brilliant and our collective intelligence is sublime, so there's something cursed about LLM marketing being like "look how smart it is". duh humanity smart

And the theft of that collective intelligence (theft here only meaning rent-seeking on the commons, they haven't isolated the sources of that intelligence merely created a chokepoint on the most compelling interface to it yet) has been unfathomably undervalued.

There is a gulf between "the people do not have a right to knock down my door with pitchforks after every decision they dislike" and "the people cannot be trusted to even see my inner reasoning notes to learn lessons from".

Alright, cool, I get it: democracy can put too much pressure on legal experts to remain clear-headed, let's keep that sacrosanct or whatever. But if you shield yourself from all consequence or even the *hint* of consequence for your actions, guess what? That's just as poisoning to impartiality.

Hey, both E2E-encrypted messaging and public-private key identity exist. Why can’t we vote for every level of government from our phones, like weekly?

I agree, module shadowing is crazy, python must be stopped.

Stop using this unsafe garbage before the entire world starts pwning your machines and putting backdoors in everything. It will never be safe. It cannot be safe. It's part of the stupid design of this stupid bullshit. Just stop using it.

Symbiosis, from my memory, is introduced like way too late in school. It’s not some quirk of sharks and remoras: mutualism is lowkey a foundation of ecosystem interaction and any myths to the contrary do damage to us.
