It's that time of year when I teach our new masters students how to find stuff on their topics on the internet and in various databases. They display the traditional mix of anxiety and passion!

Very true. And something those of us with power to change small things should be trying to improve.

It concerns me that the HE sector continues to over reward individual accolades such as grant getting (partly a matter of luck) and under reward vital things such as sustained collegiality and commitment to supporting students. It’s not healthy.

That moment when the endless meetings and desperate rush to get everything ready for the beginning of the semester gives way to the first class of actual students who ask good questions and remind me why I love doing what I do!

All my teaching instincts make me recoil. But my students really could do with the 'thinking-on-your-feet'-training I received in tutorials and which is impossible in large classes. Include it as practice throughout the semester rather than evaluation?

The joys of raising a bilingual child, chapter 125. Said child now produces beautiful sentences in freewith subjunctives in them. I have clear memories of rather painful secondary school French lessons and having to learn how and when to use the subjective. Brains are amazing...

I am trying to put together a lecture for beginner masters students on this and it is infuriating. I taught their predecessors over the years all the useful tips and tricks. Now I have to stop myself from having a 1-hour-rant about how everything is worse now.

Sorry chatbot lovers but the waning of Boolean operators in most search functions on websites has made my life actively worse. You can't find anything, you can only have things suggested to you.

Regularly scheduled caveat that being kind is NOT about being "nice". Where nice will lie and "just wants to get along," kindness is about accountability, responsibility, and honesty. It will necessitate hard conversations and good boundaries. It is often about doing what's hard, not what's easy.

Excellent news and in time for a new round of training incoming masters students on digital tools!

EThOS platform restored! 'Following restoration work, all metadata records previously available on EThOS have now been restored, along with an additional 14,000 records added since the service was taken offline' - more to come https://www.bl.uk/stories/news/ethos-records-restored

Adding this to the list of examples of disappearing databases I show students when talking about digital history. The one I was saddest about is the NYPL menu database...

A sad tale of disappearing databases lukemckernan.com/2026/06/28/l...

Elif Oezmen@elifoezmen.bsky.social

“Wir verbieten das Verbot von künstlicher Intelligenz”. An Universitäten. Bei Prüfungsleistungen. Da bin ich jetzt einfach sprachlos. Was nicht so oft vorkommt. Soll doch halt eine KI für “beide Seiten gewinnbringend” schreiben, was hier stehen könnte. www.br.de/nachrichten/...

When reality surpasses fiction! Top: fictional forecast for August 2050, broadcast by French TV in 2014 to warn about the consequences of global warming. Bottom: Real French forecast for yesterday, June 22, 2026.
