Best of luck to all of you!

Walrus Computing@walruscomputing.bsky.social

Today, Walrus Computing is coming out of stealth. We’re on a mission to turn fault-tolerant quantum computers into engines of discovery. We build the software layer that makes them useful to anyone with a question worth asking.

Cryptography used to rely on hardness assumptions. Now it relies on a "bad PR assumption": a cryptosystem is still safe to use since it would be bad PR if AI labs announced how to break it. Pro tip: Given the absence of cryptography problems in the OpenAI release, consider a career in cryptography!

Per popular request, I've extended the application deadline for both postdoc positions to *Aug 19*.

Alexander Jahn@physicistalex.bsky.social

Big news: I'll be moving to APCTP in Pohang, South Korea, starting a new group in October! I'll be hiring two postdocs on a range of topics from high-energy to quantum information theory, collaborating across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Deadline Aug 12. More: www.apctp.org/bbs/board.ph...

Some initial thoughts, and a complicated mix of feelings. Wow. I mean, Erdos problems are cool (I genuinely mean that), I didn't know about the Jacobian conjecture before it got disproved. But this newest batch from OpenAI hits home in a way the previous announcements did not.

I tend to agree with Tobias. It will be interesting to see near-term changes in the valuation of certain aspects of research. An important problem I see is who can afford access to frontier models and how the scientific community should address this. tjoresearchnotes.wordpress.com/2026/07/28/p...

It's not necessarily the end of mathematics, but it's hard to see how the all the social structures that support the subject will be able to avoid major disruption over the next few years.

Last year, I became interested in the question what happens if we impose computational efficiency onto information theory. In our latest paper, we analyze how this changes the amount of information that can be transmitted over a channel -- spoiler alert: a lot! scirate.com/arxiv/2601.1...

100% agree. Especially since we have author IDs that are matched to the papers when they are claimed!

Sophie Huiberts@sophie.huiberts.me

Arxiv's lack of commitment to its author page feature is so disappointing. Why, when I click on the link that is an author's name, am I sent to a search page of "F. Lastname"? This is ridiculous

The largest fundamental science agency in Europe will save €1.4 million annually by breaking free from Clavariate Analytics' huge databases of references and citations. "We have worked for free to lock ourselves collectively into a paid system", one head of the CNRS explains - but no more! 🎉

From January 1st 2026, the CNRS will cut access to one of the largest commercial bibliometric databases, Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science, along with the Core Collection and Journal Citation Reports.

🥳I am very happy to have been awarded an ERC Starting Grant that I will use to start my own group and explore the large-scale entanglement properties of complex quantum systems. This would not have been possible without my fantastic collaborators and supervisors. A big "thank you" to all of you! 🙏

Did you know how much of the power generation capacity added each year world-wide was in renewables? 2022 it was 80 % 2023 it was 86 % 2024 it was 92,5 % Not because the whole world suddenly turned „woke“, but because it’s the cheapest!

BREAKING from @science.org: The Trump admin is seeking to kill nearly all climate research at NOAA, its climate science agency. Its near-final budget proposal would end all NOAA research labs, academic institutes, and regional climate centers. And it wants to fully end the NOAA Research division.

I'm going to tell you a little story about how the sausage of science journalism is made. You may already know that the big journals - Nature, Science and so on - provide reporters with embargoed copies of papers before they are published. But what exactly does that mean?

I have a positive update regarding this matter: The German National Library of Science and Technology in Hannover (TIB, www.tib.eu) confirmed that they will download and archive the entire arxiv.org as a safety measure.
