So tell me in terms a simpleton like me can understand: who sets the electricity standing charge? The provider or some quango? Why would it rise 20% in a year? I get that he per usage cost is market and/or cap driven and have to accept that.

After my near kidney failure and heart failure last Christmas I got 8 weeks' physio on the NHS from the Heart Failure team at the local gym. About a month ago I decided I ought to put in the effort to continue it and started paying for some exercise and nutrition coaching.

And for once, political protocols aside, I would damned well hope that their commander in chief would weigh in with an opinion at least on this. "Just following orders", especially from the likes of Jenrick, went out as a defence decades ago!

At 59, I've seen moves toward reduction in WMDs, the "End of History", the iron curtain, individuals caring and generosity as thy are exposed to problems in the world, laws protecting women, sexual minorities. Yet somehow it feels like it's slipping into barbarism. Am I just being pessimistic?

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church: "Consequently, the Church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that β€œthe death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person”, and she works with determination for its abolition worldwide."

If you favourite (!) politicians are squabbling over whether to keep one, two or three rules in place to stop politicians tinkering with the paltry dole they give to retired folk, you should fire them all. They can't see the wood for the twigs on one of the trees. Useless grifters the lot of them.

Even if you are an ardent EU rejoiner, be careful about false promises: THe EU themselves and all its member states have to agree. Trim your sails for now and look to the EFTA/EEA/Customs Union/Schengen agreements for a couple of decades I reckon.

In a fair economy where the rewards of production are more equitably distributed and we are not asked to pay a rentier for the privilege of having a place to live, we could have a basic income and save enough for a comfortable retirement.

Why does Windows update take so long? I've just checked my internet speed and have c. 100Mb down and up and yet the "September 2026" updates have so far taken over 2 hours just to download. Thank godness y main machine is a Cupertino machine! :)

I'm a single person living in a c.45sq m new build flat and I've just had my first "proper" water bill suggesting I'm using an average of 350l per day. How the hell do I get to 350l per day I wonder? Short showers 2x a week. Efficient washing machine, same. Very odd!

Maybe of course the UK security agencies are just better at concealing them than in the USA, but I'm not sure we actually have enough blacksite prisons to cope with Tommo, Ten-names and the Nonce Bonnets do we? Maybe Diego Garcia could be repurposed now it's back on the table apparently? :)

Places I "lived" from 0 years to 18 years: Anlaby London Belfast Fraserburgh Iringa Milltimber Panal Nairobi Panal South Cave Kibworth Willerby Houston Schools during that time: Iringa Milltimber Kirby Overblow Cavina Hymers Kibworth Smallwood Aldenham Denstone Any wonder I've been a wreck?

I'm all for secession really! But if you plan to secede and then declare yourself some kind of a monarchy and invite fascist mercenaries to your press photoshoots, you were never good liberals anyway. Away with you! But I think you might have been happier joining Buckinghamshire!

Amazing really that the one former prime minister of the past thirty years who had the private wealth and connections to hop into any top role he wanted, and probably in the USA, is the only one still in parliament #rishi Ted Heath lasted 26 years as a backbencher after office!

I got my first notice of what my little solar PV panels have "earned" me in the past three months. Roughly 150% of my total energy expenditure over the same time, even though I only get 80% of the money value per kw compared with consumption and have to pay standing charge on consumption!
